The San Diego Chargers released inside linebacker Matt Wilhelm on Friday, one week before their first full-squad practice of training camp.

Career Statistics
Games/Starts: 71/21
Tackles: 220
Interceptions: 6
Wilhelm started the Chargers' first five games last season before losing the job to Tim Dobbins. Wilhelm also started two games toward the end of the season, but San Diego gave a a free-agent contract to Kevin Burnett, a former Dallas Cowboy who will compete with Dobbins for the Chargers' starting job this coming season.

“We appreciate Matt’s effort and hard work over the past six years,” Chargers coach Norv Turner told the team's official Web site. “We like our depth at inside linebacker, so we decided to make this move now to allow Matt a chance to land with another team.”

The Chargers selected Wilhelm in the fourth round of the 2003 draft, and he served as a backup and special-teams player until 2007, when he made 14 starts. Wilhelm made 220 tackles and six interceptions in 71 games (21 starts) with San Diego.

Chargers rookies and select veterans will practice Monday morning, and entire team is scheduled to take the field for training camp Friday, July 31.
