Chance Warren Alignment: Lawful Neutral Gender: Male Age: 6 (Appears to be in his late 20s) Occupation: Scholar-Physician Residence: The loft of a small shack in the docks, or somewhere near the infirmary during a crisis APPEARANCE Height: 5'7" Weight: 133 lbs Build: Slender Origins: Necromancy-corrupted Primal Race: Shapeshifter (Great Horned Owl) Eye Colour: Grey Hair Colour: Brown Unique Features: He always seems to have a feather stuck in his hair. Attire: Typical work and traveling attire PERSONALITY Likes: Troubleshooting, Politicking, Business, Rabbit Dislikes: Fire, Cruelty, Waiting Hobbies: Mending people and things, Learning about life and death, frustrating bores and bureaucrats Aspirations: Protecting the city and the wilds, working his way onto the council Fears: Dying before accomplishing the above, having his wings clipped, inadvertently harming those he strives to protect PERSONAL HISTORY Not many people can say they began life as a bird. Chance was one such individual, a creature without a name or knowledge of his place in the world. He flew, he hunted, he slept; life was simple. That simple life was shattered by a necromancer fleeing from a distant village whose death-curse tore his home asunder. Plants and animals alike perished in the devastation, but the very thing that destroyed his companions catapulted him into a state of heightened awareness, altering his very being in the process. As he left the charred clearing that he once called home, stumbling through the wilds on unfamiliar legs, he found that the natural world that he had once been a part of rejected him utterly. He would have perished almost immediately, had the necromancer's death-curse not alerted a party of explorers. Chance had spared him, and so he took the word for his name. A confusing journey later, he found himself in Sanctum, where the company vouched for him enough to keep him from rotting in a cell. He adapted to the urban jungle nearly as well as he had to life in the wilds, picking up language and human mannerisms with frightening speed. He was initially skeptical of the death magic that permeated his being, but the discovery of his mundane kin's lifespan - 15 years at most- granted him a new sense of urgency. Rather than using his talents to cheat death directly (and further corrupt himself in the process), he has become a tireless advocate of progress and exploration, personally prodding at death to unravel the mysteries of life. How he's managed to avoid the notice of those who would be all too happy to give him a more personal experience with his field of study is anyone's guess. --- To those who don't know him well, Chance is an eccentric fellow who looks like he might be up to no good. When pressured, he'll claim to be a member of whatever religious or scholastic order suits his purposes. He takes a dim view of the governing officials of the city. On the other hand, he's all too eager to converse with merchants and tradesmen of any stripe; the wealthiest goldsmith and a poor girl selling flowers on a street corner are equals in his eyes. When not attached to a mercenary company or a noble's retinue as a physician, he can be seen in apothecaries, libraries, and temples throughout the city, perpetually searching for better medicines and methods of dealing with the various blights and ills that plague the city and the surrounding countryside. SKILLS Field Surgeon- Chance distinguished himself to his rescuers with a knack for treating wounds that bordered on the uncanny. In the four years since his arrival, aided by his magical talents, he has only honed his craft. His knowledge of anatomy is on par with clerics who have dedicated the greater portion of their lives to the healing arts. His matter-of-fact nature when dealing with patients, his frightening efficiency when performing procedures, and his inclination towards necromancy lead folks who aren't desperate to steer clear of his services, though his talent for saving lives is undeniable. Supply and Demand- As someone who goes out of his way to make himself an acquaintance of every merchant in town, Chance has an ear to the markets and an acute awareness of the value of goods and services in the city. He seldom accepts conventional payment for his services- in his mind, favors and knowledge are worth much more. POWERS Shapeshifting- Despite his primarily human appearance, Chance is an owl at heart, and can assume that form at will. Shapeshifted, he weighs about five pounds and can lift roughly one and a half times that and remain aloft. THE TRUE FACE OF EVIL The act of shifting mends minor injuries and, if he remains in his natural form for an hour, leaves him with the benefits of a full night's sleep. Mender's Instincts- Along with his shapeshifting, this talent is the only clue to his primal nature. Chance can mend small objects fashioned from materials other than metal or stone. He mostly uses this talent to mend tattered clothing and small cuts where mundane stitching would be impractical. Gentle Repose- With a bit of effort and a few minutes of preparation, Chance can ward a corpse against decay for 2 days, keeping it and its contents in a kind of stasis. He can renew such protections indefinitely, though the process makes him mildly uneasy, and he's certainly not the sort to start poking at corpses without adequate protection. Touch of the Deathless- As a medical professional of sorts, the last thing someone like Chance wants to be is covered in his previous patient while working in a current one. With a little bit of clever necromancy, he is able to lower the temperature of the area immediately around his hands, his body, or a tool. The energy that he channels in this fashion is lethal to small, non-intelligent creatures (bacteria, insects, and the like), superficially damaging enough by way of mild frostbite to be painful to larger living things, and generally unpleasant for genuine undead, though it doesn't actually harm the last. He prefers to use such a gift for mundane purposes, from sterilizing instruments to chilling a beer, but he won't hesitate to use it to defend himself when cornered. Anathema- Chance's nature is somewhat paradoxical. Individuals with primal backgrounds can recognize that he sticks out like a sore thumb in the natural order, and less progressive folks would likely call him an abomination. POSSESSIONS Doctor's Bag- Stitched together during his free time, this unassuming leather case contains all manner of small surgical and diagnostic equipment, from scalpels to stethoscope, as well as a few folk remedies for coughs, sniffles, and the like. Why use magic to fix someone when a little bit of common sense and the right tool will do the same? Walking Stick Healer or not, Chance fancies himself a wizard of sorts, and what's a wizard without his staff? Fashioned from a the implement of the necromancer who cursed him, a branch, and a little magic, rumor has it that it contains all sorts of malevolence and nastiness. It doesn't; he's a doctor, not a fighter, and while he's taught some ruffians a lesson with it before, the staff is more of a memento than a magical tool. Robes- He has more sets of robes than most vain wizards. All of them are in various shades of brown and made in what little spare time he has- when you stitch up people for a living, stitching up cloth seems easy by comparison! RELATIONSHIPS None worth noting at the moment. THREAD TRACKER Edited by Tree, Sep 23 2014, 06:21 PM.

It's good to be the King.

The only thing I'm really curious about is touch of the deathless. You say it's lethal to small creatures (are we talking bacteria and flies, or like, squirrels?) and painful to bigger sentients (like say a gnome or a human). Painful as in doing actual damage? Are you causing frostbite? Or is it just like a biting cold? |
