Seth Ariphus Alignment: Chaotic neutral. Gender: Male Age: 39 Occupation: Smuggler / deckhand Residence: A small mud brick townhouse on the edge of the docks, still showing signs of some old fire damage, almost certainly now in the hands of squatters. APPEARANCE Height: 5'11" Weight: 192lbs Build: Thick set Origins: Human Race: Human Eye Colour: Brown Hair Colour: Black, starting to turn grey well before his time. Unique Features: Seth has craggy, weathered features, a round face and a short beard which keeps his face warm in cold weather. He has a single scar on his right cheek just below the eye, inflicted with a broken bottle, and is missing the third finger on his right hand, which became caught in a heavy fishing net as it was cast overboard. Attire: Seth is often seen wearing a heavy leather long coat, cap and boots all treated with oil and wax to stop it soaking through with sea spray. For cold weather he has a similar set lined with wool. He wears this over a homespun linen tunic and trousers. PERSONALITY Likes: Food, gambling, good weather. Dislikes: Idleness, still air, his home. Hobbies: Drawing. Aspirations: To have his own ship. Fears: Sea monsters, fire. PERSONAL HISTORY Whilst the fleet being assembled by the Explorers' League under Otto Lind is the first officially sanctioned and well financed expedition into the great unknown, opportunists and those with no alternative have long been plying their trade off the edges of the maps. Characterised by high risk and poor cartography, their activities were of little use to increasing the knowledge of those within Sanctuary about the surrounding coastline, though that did not stop a few from trying to pass their wild stories and tall tales off as gold, which went about as poorly for them as may be expected. Occasionally the odd find of old world artefacts or exotic goods would allow these enterprising captains to make their fortune. From time to time sweeps of the docks by the authorities might confiscate navigational charts from the seafaring vessels, most of which at least masquerade as fishing ships. These charts invariably follow non-standardised measurements which make them useless to anyone other than those who made them, and that's when they're not outright fakes bought from unscrupulous traders on the waterfront and never disposed of. None the less one or two at least have the appearance of being legitimate and these invariably make their way into the hands of the Explorers' League. It's in the interest of such people to keep the maps small, for so long as the map has edges those that are willing to sail beyond it will remain the subject of reverence and admiration, even if it is in narrower and seedier circles than the more well received persons of Sanctuary. The smugglers who ply the uncharted waters are heroes to the common folk and the disenfranchised, but they acknowledge that this cannot remain the way forever and many captains are pledging their ships to Lind's planned expedition as a final cash-in. Until the League ships sail though, the smugglers remain the only ones who know what lies upon the water, and they are a secretive lot, jealously keeping information about the safe coves and independent homesteads that they know of from one another. If their cargoes, unloaded by cover of night in crates the shipping manifests proclaim to be just another ton of fish and stored in the catacombs beneath Sanctuary, are anything to go by there is plenty left of the world outside the city. <<<To give specifics, I'm imagining a small rural homestead community that the ship Seth serves on makes frequent trips to by the name of Blackwater Bay. Its main export to Sanctuary is cider apples. I'll probably tie it in with the first event I plan on setting up if I can get it green-lit. I'll remove this on request, or if necessary draw up plans for the whole thing now to remove any nebulous details.>>> Seth is one such entrepreneur. He first set foot aboard a ship at fourteen years of age. With nothing but the home he had grown up in to his name and no trade skills he was in a dire spot, but one of the 'fishing' ships was signing on an extra deckhand and he jumped at the opportunity. That was one of the first things he learned: to always have an eye for opportunity and to never pass it up once seen. It wasn't until they were out at sea that he learned of the vessel's real purpose: searching the unknown for treasures from the old world. For the whole voyage the more experienced crew regaled young Seth with tales of monsters from the deep dragging whole ships to a watery grave, leaving him with a fear that lasts to this day. When the voyage came to an end he was left with a large pouch of coins which lasted nearly a week thanks to the vices and hazards of the docks, so Seth signed on to the next ship that came into port. This was overall a more positive experience; Captain Aiden Edwards, a thirty-something seafarer with some signs of water elemental corruption, took Seth under his wing and became a mentor figure for the young lad and later a lifelong friend. Largely Seth's life has been un-noteworthy. He has served on several different ships, some legitimate fishermen and others smugglers making their runs. Aiden has always been willing to hire him as an extra hand if he needs the work. The pair of them participated in transporting people and goods to support the founding of Blackwater Bay some 14 years ago. His house has been on the market for the last five years, Seth not having set foot there for seven. No-one has shown an interest. SMUGGLER Seth is a seafarer by trade, and one that treats the laws of Sanctuary with all the respect due a sea urchin stuck to the keel. Despite his years of experience his skill with a sail is nothing to write home about, he has however picked up other proficiencies that such an occupation requires. Logistician: Serving aboard a ship gives plenty of opportunities to observe and learn the intricacies of moving large volumes of goods and making sure they are in the place they are meant to be on time. Seth has learned how to evaluate the reliability of a supplier and to consider the storage conditions of perishable goods. In terms of implementation, any expedition that Seth is part of, or any ship that he is sailing on should be considered to be well supplied at all points unless the narrative explicitly states that they have been parted from their supplies. He would be a good choice for the post of quartermaster almost anywhere. Deception: Seth has learned to misrepresent himself with a great degree of skill. Though his weathered appearance and the quality of his garb would still prevent him from blending in with high society, he can easily bluff his way into appearing as part of almost any other group, at least until called upon to display in depth knowledge or skill that his cover might reasonably be expected to have. This is a variant on 'bluff' but is exclusive to bluffing about himself. It does not necessarily make him less offensive or more likeable to the target, but it does mean that without specific skills to counter it they will see him as he wants to be seen. (as a non-arcane skill, it is trumped by any form of arcane character reading, as well as non-arcane skills such as being streetwise or being a good judge of character). It differs from the charisma skill in that it does not allow Seth to present himself as particularly charming or intimidating beyond the average untrained skill in this field. Improvised Weapons: One does not become a long-term patron of the Cloak 'n Stagger without learning to use a tankard- "no, not th' full tankard, th' ale may taste like donkey piss but that's no reason t' waste it. Here, take th' empty one with th' chip in th' rim. It'll serve you well, split more skulls than you've seen warm meals" as a club, a chair as a hammer, or an oil lamp in place of a flail. Without such knowledge they would be a very short-lived patron. Seth has seen more than his fair share of tavern brawls- "Call tha' a brawl? I blinked and I missed it! Come back here on a Thursday an' I'll show you a real bar fight. I could tell you stories..." Ahem. Seth has seen more than his fair share of tavern brawls, and picked up more than a thing or two about fighting with whatever he can lay his hands on. Seth should not be considered to be at a disadvantage when fighting armed opponents with implements grabbed in the heat of the moment, save those imposed by the materials of the implement. (for example, he cannot block an axe with an oar as it would break.) His proficiency with such weapons should be treated as above average, but does not equate to mastery. Swashbuckling: Years at sea has enabled Seth to move with ease across the rolling deck of a ship. He is able to act and fight on moving, unstable, uneven or inclined (such as a rooftop) surfaces without penalty and is much harder to unbalance under any circumstances than other characters. He cannot be knocked down except by main force or kinetic magics. POWERS (None as it stands. Considering the character's origins as an uncorrupted human I'm likely to replace this with a 'contacts' section in my first upgrade request. Instead of the character directly powering up I imagine the character's growth expanding his network of frequent employers and people who owe him a favour, both those of sound social standing and other less savoury individuals. For example, while Seth would never gain the 'grievous wounds' power to counter an enemy's unnatural healing, I may upgrade the character to have on his list of contacts a poisoner who knows how to make venoms anathema to even the unnatural life that makes Sanctuary its home. (I would expect this to be a multiple milestone cost upgrade, or perhaps an upgrade to an upgrade - say the first milestone unlocks the poisoner with a supply of normal venoms able to ail those with no unnatural protections, and then unlocking the specialist supplies would be another milestone.)) POSSESSIONS (None, and this is fairly unlikely to change permanently unless he at some point gets his own ship. I imagine the contacts system (detailed above) involving calling in favours to acquire single use items so I may use this section to keep track of which ones he has with him as a limiting factor. (In the above example, just because he knows a poisoner doesn't mean he always has an alchemical arsenal on his person) This section will list the item as described in the 'contacts' section, the thread in which he requisitioned it, and if he doest not still have it the thread in which it was used. RELATIONSHIPS Captain Aiden Edwards - mentor, long-term friend THREAD TRACKER The Warrior and the Scholar (NON-CANON) Political Intrigue: Endgame The Battle for the Gatehouse A Gathering If I've accidentally included something that would incur a milestone cost anywhere above, let me know and we'll discuss a way to tone it down. Oh, do I need to send a private message or something? Or have I missed out a really obvious detail that I somehow failed a spot check on?

Not at all, we just like to make sure that profiles are complete before we put them through their paces. It is safer than than dreaded 'but I was not done yet...' ![]() We are still flushing out the reputation based Milestone advancements, fully 'human' characters are also entitle to one profile rebalancing if you wanted to come back and add in any powers ~ or in Seth's case some notable contacts once he makes them. |
