After doing a bit of reading into NPCs I decided it was best to just make this as one as a second player character. He's a bit less in-depth than Seth was, the idea is that he's getting on in his years and all his character growth and development is already done. I doubt I'll be running him for very long, just while I find my feet with Seth, and he'll be involved in the events I'm planning, but for now here he is. --------------------------- Captain Aiden Edwards Alignment: Chaotic good Gender: Male Age: 61 Occupation: Captain, smuggler. Residence: The Laughing Wren APPEARANCE Height: 6'1" Weight: 156lbs Build: Wiry Origins: Corrupted - water element Race: Human Eye Colour: Sea-foam white, they glow slightly, only visible in poor lighting. Hair Colour: Grey Unique Features: Aiden's hair always seems to be soaked with salt-water; this and his eyes are the only physical sign of his elemental corruption. Attire: Aiden wears the oilskins of a traditional seafarer even though he has little need for it. Unlike many captains he doesn't invest in dapper clothes or stylish hats, preferring a more understated and utilitarian garb. He has not yet made the connection between this and how younger, far less successful captains seem to be much better known than him. PERSONALITY Likes: The open ocean, the smell of the sea, people who speak plainly. Dislikes: Dense crowds, dishonesty. Hobbies: Carpentry. He's not very good at it. Aspirations: The only ones that he hasn't lived already are a lost cause. Fears: Loss of those he cares about. PERSONAL HISTORY Aiden was a fairly successful fisherman, able to make a comfortable living, but it was when he switched to smuggling that he was really able to accumulate a fair bit of coin. He was able to buy a townhouse in the Quarterage where he lived for some time with his wife Erin and their daughter Wren. That all came to an end one stormy night in November of the year he turned 36. All three of them were on his ship, The Merriment, and both Erin and Wren were washed overboard and lost to the sea. On his return to shore, Aiden sold the house, unable to look at it for the memories, and bought the ship that he has now, naming it after his daughter. It was not long after this that he met Seth, who became something of an emotional crutch for him as he worked through his grief. The pair of them worked together to supply the founding of Blackwater Bay (See Seth's bio for more detail) and has been making a tidy profit supplying the settlement infrequently ever since, selling cargoes of Blackwater cider apples through a fence at Sanctum's docks. CAPTAIN Aiden is an experienced seafarer with more voyages to his name than many others can boast, though none of them noteworthy enough to gain him the recognition of his peers. His technique is resolute and flawless. Helmsman: Aiden's skill with the wheel or tiller is almost peerless. He has the steady hand and good eye for precision to sail a ship without error or complication. He makes such control seem effortless. Navigator: The ability to read direction and position by the stars is not something that comes naturally to most people, but to Aiden it comes almost as second nature. With this comes the ability to read and use sea charts. Sabre proficiency: Aiden is skilled with the use of light weight, one-handed swords with a cutting edge. He should be considered to be the equal of a trained soldier in this regard, though his proficiency is highly specialist. Underwater fighting: Aiden has on occasion had to fight while submerged in water. He is aware of how this hampers motion and has developed techniques to make a blade work under such conditions. While submerged to the waist he is able to fight more skilled foes on even terms. When fully submerged he should always be considered to be fighting at an advantage unless his foe has the same proficiency, and should only be considered at a disadvantage if that proficiency is arcane in nature. He CANNOT breathe underwater. SENSE THE CURRENT The result of Aiden's elemental corruption could at best be described as an 'awareness' rather than true manipulation; none the less he has found a number of ways to put it to use. He can 'feel' the presence and direction of any body of water up to 50m as long as it is not greatly diluted by anything other than salt, and so long as it is in constant motion. Unnatural helmsman: Aiden's mortal skill at directing a ship is complimented by the ability to sense currents around the prow of the ship. By mapping the water's motion he can anticipate otherwise unexpected changes in course, as well as being aware of hidden reefs or rocks. He has the rare talent to hold a ship to a perfectly straight course even on a starless night. Because of the range limitation this effect is greatly reduced on large ships where the helm is more than 50m from the prow. All waters flow to the sea: Sanctum's sewer water is often dilute enough for Aiden to sense it when he is in the catacombs. Because the sewers always empty into the harbour, Aiden never loses his bearings while in the catacombs, making him almost uniquely able to navigate them. Sense the enemy: In the rare and highly unlikely occasion that Aiden is fighting in ankle-to-knee deep water that is not static, (largely just fighting on a beach, in a shallow river, the sewers or a partially flooded ship) Aiden can use the disturbances in the water caused by his foes' footsteps to be aware of where they are at all times. If fighting completely underwater he becomes fully aware of all his enemy's movements as well as where they are. Needless to say this works irrespective of how much light there is in the environment, meaning he takes less of a penalty for fighting at night while these conditions are met, though not as much as someone with night vision would. Resistance to hypothermia: Aiden's body temperature doesn't exchange heat with liquids the same way as a human, a quirk of his corrupted physiology. This means that he can walk around the deck in the middle of a storm without immediately having to go somewhere warm to recover. It is also far less important for him to dry himself quickly after being thrown into cold water. The cut-off point for this is the freezing point of salt water, beyond which he suffers as anyone else would. WEAKNESSES Dehydration: While Aiden does not require any more to drink in a day than the average human, he is affected far more by dehydration than most. He becomes light-headed quickly and can suffer a stroke in a just a day without water. He is no more capable of ingesting salt water than the average human. Past his prime: Aiden is well past the age where he can expect injuries to heal cleanly. Any harm done to the character that is more than trivial can be expected to leave lasting marks and possible impairments. POSSESSIONS The Laughing Wren - A small fishing ship, about 30m in length, retrofitted with a few extra cabins. It has two cabins at the level of the main deck, and four more below decks. Her cargo capacity is not insignificant and she still carries the large fishing nets from her original purpose. The ship is 25 years old and still in good repair, never having been holed or lost a mast. A single bilge pump stands on the centre of the deck between the main mast and the cargo hatch; an Archimedes screw descending to the hold operated by a capstan. Aiden bought the ship when he was 36 and named it after his daughter who had recently died in a seafaring accident. RELATIONSHIPS Seth Ariphus - good friend, reliable to a fault. Wren Edwards - believed to be dead. (This character's going to need milestones just to justify having survived, so it's going to be a long time before she's anything but a name.) THREAD TRACKER The Warrior and the Scholar (NON-CANON) Political Intrigue: Endgame The Battle for the Gatehouse A Gathering -------------------------------- I'm aware that this combination of abilities makes him fully able to wreck almost anyone other than another water elemental if he can get them in the water. I would consider how difficult this is to set up (considering he has no proficiencies for wrestling throws and lacks the body-mass for main force in order to actually get someone into the water) to be a balancing mechanic for this, however I will take off 'sense the enemy' or 'underwater fighting' on request. I've got the personal history section done, it's a bit rushed, not a piece of work I'm proud of but it collates the information in one place for an easier read. Finished. |
