Ode to the Administrator

What many of you may not know is that every member of the Administration Team made a promise to be a member first. It was our way of creating a safety net or sorts. We all agreed that being able to roleplay was the single most important thing and the very reason we started Veil’s Edge. Every moment we dedicate to being a staff member comes after that. We try and share around the responsibility and ensure there is always someone around to answer questions. We also make a point to have another Staff member look at complex character profiles before they are approved.

Character approval is not an exact science, it is something the Staff team often juggle and deliberate on for hours, if not days. It is the price the Administration pay so that the members can have almost any character or power combination their hearts desire. The alternative is that we are all cookies rather than snowflakes. Some characters can, and will, take weeks to fully process and it will be a back and forth that can go on for a while. We also know that the excitement and energy for a character concept may not survive this process.

While we appreciate that it can be a time consuming and utterly frustrating process for us as well as the members, on our end it is also a completely thankless job. We have to constantly tackle wonky wording and over inflated ability descriptions. Most people want their characters to be the most powerful they could possibly be for the least amount of cost or effort involved and completely forget that Veil’s Edge is about the stories. The Administration Team is not made up of unthinking, unfeeling machines. The forum is our place to escape, relax with friends and share stories. So when we are faced with unnecessary grief and bitterness around character power approvals or upgrades, no matter how hard we try to remain impartial, it is going to hit us on a personal level. No one has armour that is impenetrable and it will burn us out that little bit more.

We do not give people preferential treatment. We do not try and make the process overly complicated or give people a hard time. We are also not here to pander to peoples whims. We do not enjoy telling people 'no' or crushing their creativity in anyway. We genuinely want people to have the characters whose stories they want to bring to life. The decisions we make are what we believe is the most balanced way to approach powers while still ensuring Veil’s Edge remains fun and rewarding for everyone involved.

So from the bottom of our heart we ask that all members please try to be understanding,
please try and be less demanding, and above all please remember that we are people with emotions and limitations.
