PERSONAL HISTORY The history of Jonas Clemens is, in truth, the history of Fredrick Clemens. Fredrick Clemens was, for lack of a more original description, a good man. The tediousness of that label fit him perfectly. He was a teacher, a scholar and a minor administrator within the Exploration League. He was modestly wealthy, enough to live comfortably in Quarterage and provide for his wife and only son, Jonas. He spent the majority of his time pouring over relics and artefacts of the Old World, organising the efforts of a dozen small expeditions, but only ever partaking in a few of them personally in his earlier years. Fredrick raised his son with stories of adventure and mythology, instilling Jonas with an enthusiasm for history and exploration. One story particularly enthralled Jonas. Fragments of an ancient book recovered from an early expedition under Fredrick's supervision told of an island somewhere out on the uncharted seas. Upon this island was constructed a great edifice and within were treasures the likes of which could not be imagined by even the wealthiest of Sanctum's denizens. The information however was incomplete, with no indication as to where this island was. It was put aside, ignored by the rest of the League until such a time as they might be fortunate to uncover more details. Jonas, however, was not so easily deterred. He poured over the texts time and time again, convinced that he would find something. He did not and eventually abandoned his childhood dream. The years went by. Jonas spent his time as his father's assistant, not officially part of the League. His father passed, and soon after his mother too and Jonas was left alone in the world. Grief and loneliness consumed him. Were it not for the home and money left to him he would have surely met a poor end in the Hollows. Eventually he came out of his despair and found a little work as a scholar and teacher. As he half-heartedly repaired his life, fortune struck. While organising the vast repository of knowledge and artefacts his father had assembled he rediscovered the files he had so adamantly studied as a child. Their condition was poorer than he remembered and his neglect of such priceless artefacts galled him. As he lifted the ancient tome the binding crumbled and from the spine fell a thin roll of parchment. That long forgotten excitement rushed back to him, as though it had been waiting all these years for this moment to come. Upon the parchment was detailed something he couldn't have hoped for even in his wildest dreams. A map, detailing the location of the island. He studied it in a fervour and after days of isolated work managed to relate the map to Sanctum's position. At that moment something resolved within him. His life had never felt especially meaningful. He was a nobody, a small man trapped in the shadow of his father's own modest achievements. Until now. This was his calling, his great destiny. He would find the island and claim the treasure, cementing his place in the history of great explorers. Only he wouldn't join the League. They had done nothing for him in his father's passing, despite the vast amount of work Jonas had indirectly done for them. He would return to Sanctum a hero and they would be forced to acknowledge him. He sold almost everything. Once he had auctioned off the furniture and (reluctantly) sold his father's collection he put the house on the market as well. That accumulated a small fortune, enough for him to hire a Captain with a ship, a crew and all the supplies and equipment he would need to undertake the journey. Finally, it was time to make the legacy of Jonas Clemens. SKILLS Jonas retains a mental encyclopaedia of theoretical knowledge, ranging throughout a variety of subjects, such as rudimentary sciences, geology, architecture, literature, what little history remains to the people of Sanctum and so on. His practical abilities, however, are virtually none existent. POWERS None. POSSESSIONS A spare change of clothes, quite a bit of money and most importantly, the files on the expedition. RELATIONSHIPS None. Edited by Xarek, Dec 1 2014, 06:53 AM.
