Sir Titus Salt’s Hospital; A Description of the Hospital

York's Hospital is an incredibly attractive and grand three story building. The exterior is constructed in the same attractively finished warm honey-colored stone as the almshouse complex to which it once belonged. Most striking is the decorative detailing it is adorned with, such as the columns between the round-arched windows, motifs on the keystones and hoodmolds.

At first the hospital only had room for nine patients, but was later extended to add another story which added considerably to its capacity.

In stark contrast to the architectural beauty, the inside is often filled with the injured and dying - sometimes, more than the hospital has capacity for. The team of York's finest medical experts consists only of a couple of resident Doctors and a handful of Nurses, all of whom are greatly over worked and underpaid.

There is a mortuary deep within the basement, along with a few bare store rooms. The dark, dank halls echo and distort the sounds from above floors to create an unsettling feeling that you are not alone. Few seldom find reason to venture down there and most prefer to find excuses not to.

The area surrounding the basement's perimeter connects with York's tunneling drainage system. In the dead of a typically wet English night it has been suggested that you can hear the water flowing through the neighboring passages. A theory only the bravest would dare to confirm.
