Store Manager, 1995-1999 SFSU College of Communications; Work Study - Student Office Manager, 1995-1998 Campaign Assistant DNC San Francisco Regional Office, 1999 Executive Intern DNC California Executive office San Francisco, 2000-2001 TA Communications Golden Gate University, 2001-2004 Asst. Student Services Manager Golden Gate University, 2004-2005 Acting Student Services Administrative Director, 2005-2009 Deputy Director of Legislative and Government Affairs; City of San Francisco Mayor's Office, 2010-current US House of Representatives 8th District of California Long Form: Mother older, father younger, was in USAF, killed in training when she was a little over a year old... moved to cali, mother was a drug addict and alcoholic, sold herself to get by. Maia stayed with neighbors who looked out for her as best as they could. In High School, she was raped after the Homecoming Dance by a member of the football team when she was a sophomore. Deciding not to have an abortion, she birthed twins and dropped out of school because she wouldn't give them up and had the smarts to get her GED. Wanted to go to college, and her neighbors who helped raise her gave her the money to go to college for one year, which she proved herself and got scholarships and grants to finish in 3 years. Worked a work study job and an off campus job to support her and her children. Then while in her internship, she was offered a low level campaign job for a state senator who saw something in her, she then worked her way up while getting her masters, and joined the administrative staff at the University. She worked he way up the ladder using her usual determination and hard work, eventually landing a seat in local government as a member of the Mayor's Office. When the district house seat came open, she used her political influence as a COS and her connections with the senator and other political office holders she came into contact with in her career to run for the house position and barely won pledging to help the lives of those in her community who never gave up on a girl who had no real future until someone stepped up. In late 2011, Maia had a major change in her life occur. During a routine self-breast exam, she detected a lump. She immediately went to her doctor. After many tests, it was determined she did in fact, have breast cancer. She was diagnosed with Stage 2 Invasive Lobular Carcinoma. This is the second most common type of breast cancer and at stage 2 is still highly treatable and curable. Wanting to keep her personal medical struggle private, she contacted the leadership of the House and her party and arranged for an extended leave of absence. She underwent a double mastectomy with chemotherapy and hormonal therapy. She then underwent physcial therapy in addition to reconstruction. The journey has been long, and her personal struggle made her even more resolved to serve her constituents. Upon her return to the House she made a public declaration of what had occurred and got back down to doing the business of the people of California! (edited for spelling errors and to change congressional districts to 12 from 8 due to '12 redistricting lines) Edited by Maia, 4 Jun 2013, 01:44 AM.

I might have to change congressional district to 12 if you go off the 2012 congressional lines that went into effect 13. |

We're going off the 2012 lines because that makes it easier to do approval ratings. Welcome aboard.

I think so, yes. If that's a district more favorable to the Democrats, sure. There's benefits in being in a competitive district if you want to run statewide, and all. (Easier to run statewide, etc). |

Sure, do you want a brand new character or just to explain how you came back from a lengthy absence and all that jazz? |

or just make her join the house now, we could change the bio to reflect this. I don't know how much time has passed to be able to come back realistically, unless it was for breast cancer and extended treatment, etc. |

I'm down with whatever you want to do. Just pick a path, put it in the bio, and we're good to go. I'll mask you now. |
