Name: Wayne Melvin Griswold Date of Birth: 11/18/1950 Place of Birth: Wheeling, West Virginia Place of Residence: Elkins, West Virginia District & State of Representation: West Virginia’s 2nd district Party: Democrat Family Info: Wife (Martha), 4 Children, 6 Grandchildren Education Info West Virginia University, BS in Geology West Virginia University, MS in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering Stanford University, PhD in Petroleum Engineering Occupational History Student, 1968-1976 Researcher at Stanford University, 1975-1978 Reservoir Research Engineer with Schlumberger, 1978-1982 Founder of Griswold-Hackensack Petroleum Consultants, 1982-present Professor at West Virginia University, 1991-1999 Chair of the Petroleum Engineering Department, 1999-2004 Congressman from West Virginia’s 2nd, 2005-present Wayne was born in Wheeling, West Virginia to the son of Gene and Gerald, a blue collar veteran who would eventually leave to fight in the Korean War, where he was killed. His mother raised him and his siblings. He eventually attended WVU, where he studied Geology and excelled. Looking at the opportunities he decided to head into graduate school studying petroleum engineering, eventually leading him to get a doctorate at Stanford. He continued to work there primarily as a researcher with an interest in reservoir simulations and valuation. After several years conducting research he began to work with Schlumberger as a reservoir research engineer in Houston, TX, attempting to innovate ways of estimating hydrocarbon content in reservoirs… After several years in that position he eventual left to form a business with a close friend of his called Griswold-Hackensack Petroleum Consultants. The business specialized in reservoir valuation and remains one of the reputable names in the industry world for reservoir valuation. During his time there, in 1987, he was brought back to his home state to examine the oil and natural gas fields that had once existed in that state. During that time, he found himself increasingly involved with his Alma Matter. Eventually he was offered a position as an assistant professor and eventually moving to become the Chair of that Department. During his time as Chair he found himself increasingly immersed in the discussion of West Virginia’s rekindled oil and gas industry, becoming particularly close to then-Governor Bob Wise. He was appointed to various commissions and study groups in the state. Eventually owing to his closeness with the Governor and his own personal wealth, still growing from his business, he was asked to run for another congressional district held by Republicans—which he did and won in 2004. He tends to be a more conservative Democrat on many social issues and a populist on many economic issues. He is known to be a religious Baptist, though he does continue to support allowing for abortion to remain safe, rare, and legal. edit: changed district and hometown information, etc...
