Graduating as the valedictorian at Sam Houston High School in 1968, Thomas chose not to accept a college deferment, signing up with the United States Army. After having been granted a commission through the OCS program, Lieutenant Thomas served as part of the combat brigades sent into Vietnam by the Nixon Administration. After being wounded in battle in 1971, Lieutenant Thomas received an honorable discharge and subsequently enrolled in the Economics program at Southern Methodist University. While he thought he would use his degree to advance his work in an insurance firm started by his Uncle, he increasingly felt called to the ministry after having come into a relationship with Christ in 1975. After graduating with a degree from Dallas Theological Seminary, he was hired as the first Pastor of Grace Fellowship Church in Dallas, a teaching pastorate he would hold for the next eight years. In 1988, after having been coaxed by several friends and associates, Thomas ran for the Dallas City Council. Running as an unabashed Christian conservative, Thomas easily won the seat and was re-elected in 1992. In 1994, as part of the Republican sweep, Councilman Thomas was elected as the new Mayor of Dallas on a platform of standing up for taxpayers and cleaning up the way City Hall had been run. After two successful terms as Mayor, Mayor Thomas was nominated to run in an open primary for the Texas 6th Congressional district. By now a well known commodity in Dallas politics, Thomas easily won both the primary and the general election, and he has occupied that seat ever since. Correct you are. Make that Texas 6th, not Texas 5th. |
