Jebediah Franklin King
(R-CA-23)

Jebediah King was born on October 13, 1958 to Gordon King (b. 1933), a small business owner in the Twin Cities, Minnesota, and Jaqueline “Jackie” King (b. 1936, née Grosvenor), a nurse. Jeb, as he'd come to be known, was a precocious young man, fiercely dedicated to his academic life, and generally unafraid of entering into conflict with his classmates and teachers. While this caused him to be at the end of a great deal of ire from both groups, it did allow him to graduate with honours from his high school in Minneapolis. King's excellent academic performance afforded him a great many opportunities in the form of scholarships for some of America's top universities. Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, and Yale were among his suitors, but King opted for the small but prestigious southern liberal arts college, William and Mary.

While at college, Jebediah studied Classics, doing a joint programme with St Andrews University in Scotland. King enjoyed studying classical philosophy and, in particular, he enjoyed the Roman philosophers. In many ways, Cicero, Augustus Caesar and Patro influenced his personal and political philosophies as well as his oratory style. “Cicero may be the name of Eloquence itself,” he quipped to friends at one point. “But King is the name of its cousin, Charisma.” The first two years of King's degree were spent in Virginia, and the final two in Scotland. Upon graduation, King sought an opportunity to continue his studies in Classics in the United Kingdom, eventually being accepted to continue his studies at Oxford's famous Trinity College.

During his post-graduate studies, King enjoyed the fantastic resources which were available to him, and began to work on translating myriad works from their original Latin and Greek to English. Among his most prized translations is a version of Cicero's “De Re Publica”. King also published several books, among the most successful being “The Lasting Legacy of Latin Philosophy” which attempted to show the remnants of the Roman philosophers in modern day life and politics as well as making prescriptions for applying their philosophy to modern day situations. The book was met with mixed reactions, most critics agreeing that the parts pertaining to Roman influence were excellent and insightful but the prescriptions were stretched and somewhat unclear. After 4 years of work at Trinity, King was awarded for his work with a doctorate.

Armed with this degree, King went on to become a professor of Latin at St Andrews University where he had previously studied. It was here that King met his future wife, a young Scottish undergraduate named Sophie Cruikshank (b. 1970). The couple married shortly after Sophie's graduation in 1990 and had their first child, a son called Marcus, in 1991. King would go on teaching Latin at St Andrews until 1999 when he would be called back to America by an opportunity to teach his preferred subject of Classical Philosophy at Stanford University in California. Here, he would teach until 2006 when he would choose to enter into politics, prompted, some suggest, by a desire to emulate Cicero's life as a statesman and orator.

Having resigned from his post at Stanford University, King fought and won a Republican Primary to run for the seat of the 18th Congressional District in California which included the very university at which he had taught. It would prove all for nought, however, as the heavily Democratic population would not elect a Republican in 2006. King's performance, however, raised some eyebrows in the Republican Party and the conservative media across the country. Despite being in a district rated D+18, King managed to close the gap with his opponent to one of single digits. Generally hailed as the best electoral performance that didn't garner an election, King was on the shortlist of Republican star candidates.

In 2008, the former professor of philosophy would be more careful in his selection of district to contest. This time, King would contest California's 23rd Congressional District, which includes Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Ventura, and Oxnard. This district, he found, was as Republican as was the 18th District Democratic. The real challenge for the former professor would be winning the primary in this case and it would prove to be a narrow victory for the rising star – no doubt, one that could be attributed to his status within the party and his support from the establishment. The General Election would be won, however, with a vote share of 70.7%.

Whilst in the House of Representatives, King would prove himself a worthy orator, an up-and-coming statesman and willing to cross the floor for support. What he was not willing to do, however, was to play politics with important policy decisions, something which did not ingratiate him with the establishment which placed him in his position from the beginning. Now comfortably capable of winning his own primary on his own merits, Jebediah is more or less distancing himself from the increasingly extreme “tea party” movement and proving himself to be a classical Republican.

King and his family are Roman Catholic and practice their faith completely. They now have three children: Marcus (b. 1991), Julia (b. 1993), and Augustus (b. 1995) who are all studying at their respective colleges. Sophie King is a professor of English Literature at Stanford University and the family currently has two homes: one just outside of Bakersfield and another just outside of Stanford. King also has a small apartment in Virginia where he stays while working on Capitol Hill. He has, from time to time, expressed a desire to be elected to the Senate, expressing his belief that it is a better home for “higher thought” on issues of great importance than is the more partisan House. As of now, he has never attempted to seek election for the upper chamber but many in the know expect him to do just that within the next three elections.
