Bill's parents were owning a small chain of department stores with the small headquarter located in Texarkana, Arkansas. The Malcolmson family had been considerably wealthy before the great depression and they managed to work they way from rags to riches again (and Bill inherited nearly 126 million $ in 1964 when his parents died.) It caused notable national controversy when Malcolmson as the main stockholder announced that he would sell his stocks only to shareholders who pledged to keep the grocery stores segregated. Malcolmson later apologized for this move. Malcolmson started his brief stint in politics interning for Senator Strom Thurmond, before he joined a series of powerful lobbying companies on K-Street. He relocated to Alabama to become the head of National Tobacco who were going through a series of lawsuits from people claiming that cigarette smoking had contributed to their development of terminal lung cancer. Malcolmson himself an unapologetic chain smoker used to smoke cigars during the press briefings comparing tobacco to vegetables "seeing that it's a plant". He later stated in an interview with 60 minutes in 1997 that he was wrong when he made that assessment. Malcolmson had donated serious amounts of cash to notable Alabama politician Fob James and joined as his campaign manager (and later his chief of staff) despite the fact that Malcolmson had registered as a Republican upon the election of Ronald Reagan. He accepted an offer to run for the Chairmanship of the Republican Party of Alabama, a controversial election where he spent a serious amount of money on direct advertisement to the delegates. He left the Chairmanship known as a strong organizer and fundraiser. When he announced that he were to step down he received correspondence from his old childhood friend Lee Nelson, who had located to Biloxi needed a founding partner for a new lobbying firm that would protect Southern Alcohol, Tobacco and firearms manufacturers. Malcolmson stayed in this position until he waged a campaign for the US house of representatives. Malcolmson won a close campaign towards the Democratic Challenger and got seated as the new Senator from Alabama. Malcolmson is known as a staunch social conservative, fiscal conservative. |

Allow me to cite an appropriate quote from "The Godfather"....."just when I thought I was out, THEY PULL ME BACK IN!" It's like that. You never kick the GovSim addiction, EVER.
