Madame Speaker, Geraldine Ferraro saved lives. As a victim of multiple myeloma she testified on this Hill and received, for fellow victims of her illness, millions of dollars in funding for new research into cancer. Geraldine Ferraro saved lies and I am disgusted by the ignorance displayed by my colleague. We have stood in this body and honored countless of men and women who have done far less to contribute to life than Gerry has. Gerry helped secure funding for cancer research, she helped open doors for women, and I am appalled at the insensitivity displayed by the Gentleman from California. I yield. |

Madam Speaker, I was unaware the House of Representatives had been replaced in my weekend in Georgia by the Roman Catholic Curia; I urge the Speaker to rule the patently religiously motivated and unconstitutional amendment by the gentleman from California as ungermane. I yield. |

Madame Speaker, I was not the one who included "may she rest in peace" in the resolution. If my amendment is too religious for this body than so is this resolution -- and may God help us all if that is the case. I yield. |

Madame Speaker, The authors of this legislation ask this Congress to "express[] ... [its] gratitude and appreciation to Geraldine Anne Ferraro," for making "significant contributions to the American political process, including a more active role of women entering politics," for being the first Vice Presidential nominee of a major party that was a woman, for being "a true American leader with a strong commitment to the middle class, women, and minorities," and for being "a hero to the feminist movement, a fighter for a more just America, and a believer in putting the interests of her constituents over the interests of the political action committees and special interest groups." I never met Congresswoman Ferraro, but she is spoken of well in this chamber, and I certainly feel it appropriate to express gratitude and appreciation to her for her work, may she rest in peace. This resolution says nothing about abortion. It does not laud Congresswoman Ferraro for fighting for a woman's right to chose. It does not condemn Congresswoman Ferraro for fighting for a woman's right to choose. It says nothing, in fact, about a woman's right to choose. Or about the right to life. Or about abortion at all. Or about any political issue at all. We're complimenting a woman here for her service -- not saying she was right about everything. Turning this into a political debate about abortion is, frankly speaking, silly. So long as we are going to discuss abortion, let us discuss the facts regarding abortion, not the fictions. The Centers for Disease Control provides excellent information regarding this matter. First, the CDC notes that 105 boys are born for every 100 girls in the United States, and that said ratio has been "remarkably stable," since the 1940s (Source). Second, the CDC notes that 91.5% of abortions occur prior to the fourteenth week of pregnancy, when the sex of a baby can be determined (Source). Both these statistics clearly demonstrate that sex selection is not "very common," in the United States, as some in this chamber suggest. The campaign undertaken by the pro-life group "Live Action," to demonstrate the existence of "gendercide," in the United States lacks similar empirical evidence. Live Action relies primarily upon studies conducted of specific immigrant communities -- Asian Americans and Indian Americans -- along with non-scientific papers offered by pro-life activists. Live Action makes no attempt to account for counter-veiling evidence, however, despite its existence. End of the day, much as pro-life activists might wish for it, sex-selective abortion simply isn't happening much -- if at all -- in this country. Let's move off the topic of abortion, though, and onto the topic of crediting major contributors to our society. The Congress and the President have repeatedly credited individuals for specific contributions while not lauding everything those individuals did. I can't tell you how often we honor George Washington -- yet he owned slaves. Are we saying, then, that slavery is acceptable? I think not -- we're merely recognizing that Washington, though faulted, certainly made important contributions. Congress has even recognized the contributions of pro-choice individuals in the past, often at the behest of the Republican members of this assembly. Does Congressman St. John suggest we retract the gold medal offered to Nancy Reagan, who famously favored pro-choice policies? How about Betty Ford, an unapologetic abortion activist? Shall we enact legislation canceling the Presidential Medal of Freedom offered to Chief Justice Warren Burger, Associate Justice Thurgood Marshall, and Associate Justice William Brennan, given their decisions in Roe v. Wade? No conservative member of this chamber minded honoring these pro-choice folks -- so, tell me, why do they mind honoring Miss Ferraro? Feel free not to answer that rhetorical question. But I do ask that anyone opposed to this resolution end the hypocrisy, and condemn the entire legacy of these conservative leaders, just as you condemn the entire legacy of this liberal leader today. I yield. |

Mme. Speaker, Speaking as a pro-life woman who admired Geraldine Ferraro, I second this amendment. Not standing up for life must always be considered, in spite of her considerable accomplishments. I yield. |

Madam Speaker, I once again urge you to rule the amendment non-germane, and note that the motion to call was previously seconded before the amendment and should take precedence. In the event that the amendment is ruled germane, I move to amend such amendment as follows:
I yield back. |
