The camera opens up on a man, who if you had to guess looks much older than his actual age of 49, lying in his bed. Blanket pulled up to his chest with his arms outside of the covers. Fingers clenched together resting upon his stomach. His eyes wide, affixed to the ceiling for no real particular reason, just lost in thought. For those familiar with CRW, or even APW or SCW, this man is known. This man is Buck Dempsey. A veteran of 34 years in the brutal world known as the professional wrestling industry. A place where the beating on your pride, self esteem, and personal worth are just as big as the physical one. Buck has spent most of his career in the shadows. Known for little appearances here and there. Mostly for his run through the territories in the 80’s. But mostly he is known for his inability to reach the big time or to even win clutch matches when the time comes. Although for a while after coming to CRW, it seemed as if he was going to break that stigma. That is until a dismal final quarter of 2012 got to him. And it seems as if that streak of misfortune has followed him into 2013. But it’s nothing this beat up old man isn’t used too. His all time record teeters on a .500 mark. Taking the good with the bad is something he has grown accustom too, even if he doesn’t necessarily like it. A wise man once told him that life is a series of peaks and drops. You don’t know you’re on a peak until you begin to drop, and you don’t know you’re in a drop until you start to rise to the peak. It’s a never ending cycle of life. You have to know both the good and the bad to at least try and make some sense out of the whole thing. Right now though his mind is currently on his last contest inside of the squared circle. It was neither a win nor a loss, instead a hated “no contest”. Buck never liked when a match was thrown out. He always preferred to have a match end the way it was supposed to, with a winner and a loser. Without those things one can’t differentiate whether or not he was the better man that night. And without that things like doubt can creep into your mind. And the last thing Buck needed was to doubt himself. The match itself wasn’t to hard. It was intended to be a refresher for PERSEVERANCE as Buck and Donovan hadn’t gone out there just the two of them in a little while. There were plenty of huge tag matches to keep them together but they wanted to get back to “normal” before the tag tournament. A chance to run through the motions one last time before the big show. Of course this didn’t turn out the way he had intended. Instead he found himself fighting off a group of masked strangers. But in the end it was he who was laid out with a chokeslam in the middle of the ring, something he doesn’t take too kindly too. So now his mind is running on all cylinders. Parts wondering who were these masked men, were they his normal set of enemies just trying to play a new trick? The rest trying to focus on what’s ahead. The chance to bring glory back home to CRW and the chance to prove that PERSEVERANCE is one of the best tag teams in the world. But that in itself could be hard when you do have some of the best tag teams in the world as your competition. Things just don’t seem to come easy for the old man anymore, at least that’s how he is beginning to feel. His only hope is that some people view his name on a piece of paper as threatening as he does some of the other guys. He knows how just a little intimidation factor can go a long way. As for right now though the thing he needs most is some rest. He rolls over and sticks an arm under his bed. He pulls his arm back and with it a bottle of Booker’s bourbon. He sits up as he opens the bottle and takes a long drink. He then screws the top back on and places the bottle on his nightstand. He then lays back down and waits for the high proof alcohol to do its thing. The camera then transitions. We now see Buck sitting at his kitchen table. It must still be morning because he is shirtless and is wearing pajama pants, or he’s just feeling lazy today. A Camel cigarette rests in his mouth as he is reading a piece of paper. He takes a drag and then flicks the ashes into the tray. He has recently made the change from unfiltered to filtered for what he refers to as a “healthy alternative”. His doctors recommended that he quit smoking all together but when you’ve been smoking for over 30 years you might find it hard to quit as well. Buck takes a sip from his coffee and then looks back at the paper. Eddy, Buck’s youngest son, has printed a list of all the teams in the upcoming tournament. He also came up with some complex rating system to show which teams are his highest threats and which ones are his lowest, but he doesn’t believe in things like that. He knows as well as anyone else that anyone can win any match on any given day. Determining who is more of a threat than another is just a way of making yourself overconfident. And when you get overconfident you go home in the first round. Something he does not want to do. The list is long, the names are known, some are even rivals. Some he would love to send home packing as soon as possible. We then see Eddy walk into the shot. A young man, just turned 17, is one of Buck’s closest confidants. CRW owner Talon Wilkinson once called Eddy a “walking wrestling wikipedia”. Even thought he may be young he knows a lot when it comes to wrestling and the wrestlers themselves. In fact besides other sports and The Walking Dead, wrestling is the only thing Eddy watches. He takes a seat across from his father. Eddy: I see you got the sheet. Buck: Yeah. Buck’s deep gravely voice seems to echo across the apartment. Eddy: You alright Dad? Buck: Yeah, just early. Eddy: The competition is rough and the tournament structure is rougher. Buck: Oh yeah? Down to business already huh? Eddy: You want to win don’t you? There isn’t anytime for fooling around with this one Dad. There are 18 other teams that want those titles just as much as you do. Most of those guys are a lot younger than you. Buck: Just means I’ve got more experience. Eddy: Yeah, and more health problems. This was true. Buck’s somewhat declining health has been a major factor in his current slump. It first started when he was diagnosed with high blood pressure and some other symptoms that led his primary doctor to tell him he was borderline for developing emphysema. Initially Buck just ignored it but then during a match with Evan Envi where it looked like he had it all but won, He got a severe chest pain that dropped him to the mat. Many people believed he had a heart attack right in the ring. However it was revealed to be angina caused by high blood pressure. An appointment with a cardiologist also revealed that Buck was borderline for heart disease. His years of drinking and smoking and abusing his body were catching up to him. Now add in some recently developing digestive tract issues and you have the current medical status of CRW’s “Black and Yellow Baron”. Buck: I’ll be fine to wrestle. Eddy: To wrestle one match I would agree. But to win this thing you have to win 3 matches. The first is elimination so you could call that another match if you wanted too. The point is that you’ve got a long night without many breaks. I don’t know how well your body is going to hold up. Buck: It’s not like I’m doing this alone. I’ve got Donny. He will keep an eye out for me. Buck knows he can trust Donovan to switch with him if he starts feeling some issues. The two have already set up strategies if Buck starts feeling under the weather. They hope to have every base covered. Eddy: But he can’t win the whole thing on his own Dad. Buck: And I’m not saying he has too. I will earn my keep out there, I always do. Eddy: I hope so. Another factor added to the tournament is that the match ups are completely random. I have no idea which teams you are facing in the first round and neither do you. It could be The Syndicate and CJ Gates and Mark Mania or it could be Sally and Rex along with Doug and Noble. And that’s just a few options. He knows why Eddy picked most of those names. Most of those people have previous wins over Buck. Gates from the Extreme Tournament, Terry Marvin is one of his biggest rivals, Doug from an appearance in SCW that he is still sour from. Then there is Rex. Buck’s big heart is known not only in CRW but around the entire wrestling world thanks to things like twitter. Buck has also developed a relationship with some wrestlers that goes beyond a normal friendship these people are fondly referred to by Buck as his “children”. His tag partner Donovan Davenport is one of those people, and so is Rex Evans. Buck’s relationship with Rex goes all the way back to the Extreme Tournament. Buck was also an instrumental factor in signing Rex to CRW. Buck has managed to avoid facing Rex so far, even admitting its something he doesn’t want to do. However he knows that if the situation presents itself in the tournament he is going to have to man up and do what he has too. Rex’s career is young, he still has a number of matches and titles to win. As for Buck he has already set his retirement date and with each passing day it is creeping closer and closer. His chance to win big tournaments like and cement his legacy are becoming rarer and rarer. This is one of those rare times he will put himself before the others he cares so much about. Buck: I don’t care who’s across the ring from me. I’ve got a job to do and I plan on doing it. Eddy: Well that part is comforting to hear. Betty: How about you quit bullying the old man? Betty, Buck’s daughter and roster member of CRW, now walks into the kitchen. She walks to the fridge and pulls out a jug of orange juice. Eddy: He needs to be ready! This isn’t something small, this is a big deal. He could make history at this show. Betty pours herself a glass. Betty: Have you looked at him? The man is a walking piece of history. Buck: Hitting your own father with the old man jokes now? Betty: Someone’s got too. Buck: Oh thanks. Betty: All I’m trying to say Eddy is that I’m sure Pops has it covered. He’s no slouch. Eddy: Alright say Dad makes it to the finals. How is he going to handle it then? Betty: He will be fine. Maybe a little tired, but as long as he stays hydrated between matches he should be alright. Buck: What do you consider hydrated? Betty: Two waters to every beer you drink in-between matches. Buck: I can try and do that. Eddy: Enough jokes, the final is a TLC match. Betty: Oh… Oh is right. At 49 years old Buck’s body isn’t necessarily one that should be climbing ladders, or the scarier thought being knocked off of one of those ladders. Who knows what would happen to him if he took a spill from that height after a night full of wrestling. It wouldn’t be good, not good at all. Buck quickly tries to think of something to turn the mood. Buck: It’s not my first run in those kinds of matches. That’s how Donny and I won the CRW tag straps. Eddy: Yeah and I had to help you with that. Plus you and Donny nearly had to argue to decide who was going to climb that thing. Buck had nearly forgotten that Eddy was there for that match, and had interfered on his behalf. But that wasn’t the point Buck was trying to make. Buck: Yeah, but now we know who will do the climbing and who will be standing around the ladder playing ground control. Eddy: I’m just saying a match like that it just too brutal for you… Buck then cuts off his son. Buck: Goddamn it you need to cut that shit! You all need to quit treating me like I’m some 77 year old geriatric with weeks left to live! I’ve proved before that I’m one tough son of a bitch. Hell I was in a war games match earlier this year that I nearly won! I’ve bled in a match before and I know I’m going to bleed again. I’ve dealt with tables, with chairs, and even with ladders! If I wasn’t competent in getting the damn job done then I would have retired a long time ago. I swear I develop a few problems and you two forget that I beat up people half my age all the time, sometimes with great ease! I can handle myself. Plus I got Donny. He’s never let me down and he isn’t going to start anytime soon. I’m going to Dallas with my partner by my side and when we leave we are going to have the Visionary Wrestling tag straps on our shoulders. Do you all understand? Both children are taken aback by the old man’s rant. Clearly not expecting him to blow like that. Eddy: I’m sorry Dad, I didn’t mean to make you upset. Buck can read the regret in his son’s eyes, and it makes him feel awful for losing it. He then speaks in a soft voice to Eddy. Buck: I know, you were just trying to help. You care about me. I understand kiddo. Betty then begins to walk out of the kitchen. Betty: Don’t be sorry. That fire is the only thing that’s going to save your old ass. The camera then switches to now show Buck standing outside of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. He is wearing his standard Kangol galaxy hat and his black and yellow jacket along with a pair of blue jeans. He then stares into the camera in front of him. Buck: They wanted me to do the promo inside, but I need a cigarette. Buck pulls out the hard pack of cigarettes from his back pocket. He puts one in his mouth, closes the pack and puts it back to where it came. He then reaches into his right pocket and removes a beat up Minnesota Vikings zippo lighter, a birthday present from Eddy years ago. He cups his hand in front of his face to block the wind. He then lights the cigarette. He flicks the zippo shut as he takes a drag from his cigarette. He then places it back in his pocket. Buck: I remember when I used to be in and out of Texas all the time. Working all the territories. There were quite a few in Texas at one time. Dallas, Amarillo, San Antonio, others too. I’ve spent a lot of time in this state. And now I find myself back, but what’s the same thing that both times have in common? Tag team wrestling. Buck takes another drag from his cigarette, exhaling slowly. Buck: In the 80’s it was with my partner Buddy Marciano as The L.A. Connection. This time its with Donovan Davenport as PERSEVERANCE. The name tells it all right there. No matter what life throws at us we manage to keep on. To keep pushing forward in hopes that one day we will reach our glory. Another drag, followed by the scratching of the stubble on his face. Buck: But don’t think that means that we haven’t tasted glory before. Because if you guessed that then you would be very wrong. Donny and I are former CRW world tag team champions. And not only just former champions but the longest reigning tag champions in CRW history. We know how to get things done together in the ring. We trust each other whole heartedly. To me Donny is more than a partner, he is my son. And that is what makes us such a dynamic team. Partners can come and go, I’ve seen that time and time again in this business. But family? Families stay together. Donny and I stay together. Buck spits on the sidewalk before returning the cigarette for another drag. The look of stress is starting to leave his body. Buck: Still the list of talent on this card is high. So many teams. So many A list players. But in the end there can only be one winning team. Only two men who will go through hell and back to win gold. To claim the glory of being able to call themselves the greatest tag team in the world today. Now I know not every team in the world is involved in this tournament, but it does seem that the best ones are. And that is all that really matters. But you can only admire you’re opponents for so long because in the end that’s all they really are, opponents. People who want the same thing you do. People who are willing to do anything to get it. I’m sure there will be cheaters, I’m sure there will be people who play it straight. I’m sure there will be a lot of things. But the winner is something I’m not sure of. There is just too many people to bet on in this one. I’m sure Vegas is going nuts trying to set the odds. I’ve heard people mention my team’s name as a team to watch, a team that can win it all. Honestly its nice to hear that. Good to finally hear someone actually thinking I’m capable of winning something. But what it really convinces me off is that Donny and I are one hell of a team. Because if we weren’t then you wouldn’t hear a soul mentioning our names. My goal is to win this whole thing. To take those titles back to New York and lay them on the desk of Talon Wilkinson. To show not only him but the entire wrestling world that CRW does indeed have the best wrestlers in the world. But in order to do that I have to outlast 18 other teams in three rounds of nothing but pure hell. Buck takes a final drag on his cigarette before he drops it and stomps it out. Buck: I have many friends in this tournament. Many enemies as well. I know that I am going to face both. That I’m going to feel great about sending some people home, awful about sending others. But that is what happens when you work in a business like this. Sometimes they tell you not to make relationships. That you’re better off on your own. But this tournament is the complete opposite of that is it not? This tournament is about who has the better teamwork, who has the best strategy, who is the complete cohesive unit? Most of my career has been spent in tag wrestling. I wouldn’t classify myself as an expert in many things but tag wrestling is something I do. And this is something I’ve shared with Donny. We weren’t the longest reigning CRW tag champs by fluke, it was because we were the best damn team in the whole company. In fact I would still say that we are the best damn team in the whole company. No offense to my other fed mates in this tournament but when push comes to shove they don’t have the track record that Donny and I have. They don’t have the experience that Donny and I do. And in the end they don’t have the drive and desire that Donny and I do. And that doesn’t go for just the CRW teams but for every team in this entire tournament. Donny and I have come to Dallas to do one thing. Buck then takes a deep breath. Buck: Persevere. The camera then fades to black. |
