The intent of this site is to provide information and counseling to classroom teachers regarding care of their voices. Because they are required to speak at length on a daily basis, teachers are prone to developing vocal problems (e.g., polyps, nodules). This site is for teachers who have experienced or are experiencing voice problems as a result of using their voices in the classroom. Resources are presented in the form of an online forum, accessible to both members and to guests. Members to post entries, ask questions, start and discuss topics within forums.
Links to other sources of information and support will be provided. You will find articles and guides that focus on preventative measures such as vocal hygiene, vocal exercises, and strategies/modifications for the classroom. Information will also provided that addresses feelings of emotional distress and frustration that may accompany a diagnosis of a voice disorder (e.g., relaxation techniques). Guidelines regarding treatment options and what to expect during therapy will also be available.
Additionally, training suggestions and information about voice disorders will be available to school administrators and other professionals who work closely with teachers. Suggestions for in-services (by school SLPs who may collaborate with teachers, for example) and school education programs will be given as well.
