Not good. Janeway knew exactly what the ambassador was referring to, and knew that this could ruin the entire trade agreement. "Tell them it's a ritual decoration used on Earth!"

The feeling to run filled up B'Elanna faster than you could say Captain Falcon but this wasn't the time. It was the time to breathe and lie through your teeth. "Well, this is an old Earth ritual decoration," she smiled. "I'm sorry we forgot to mention it beofre. We on earth call it the "Inner Earring." It is a reminder to listen to the inner you, the being that guides you and protects you from harm. Its a reminder not to jump to conclusions, but to think and weigh out all your options. To listen to the voice telling you not to judge, not to fight." B'Elanna didn't know if the captain was listening, or would even understand, but she was talking about her. The captain was truly her "Inner Earring."

Torres: It was pretty boring, until Ensign Farley started snoring and then no one could keep a straight face. Of course, the Doctor wasn't at all amused.
Paris: Oo! Hockey!
Torres: It was a shame that we had to cut the lecture short, but the warp core overloaded and then the Borg invaded and we were all assimilated.
Paris: Ah ha.
Torres: You haven't heard a single thing I've said, have you?

The alien took the device out of Janeway's ear.

"Curious device," she said softly, perplexity scattered all over her deformed face as she cradled the comm device in her hand. The alien then looked at the captain as if to ask if she can give it a try and with a small nod from the captain, she did. "Inner voice of Janeway Captain, can you hear me?"

Janeway found B'Elanna's explanation brilliant. There's a diplomat in you yet, she thought. Torres certainly deserved some kind of commendation for going through all of this.

Her thoughts were abruptly halted when the ambassador's voice came through the comm system instead of B'Elanna's. Janeway held a quick inner debate, then decided it was more cautious not to respond, and let the ambassador think the piece was purely symbolic.

B'Elanna fought back a smile. It was like talking to a child. "Ambassador, if I may have my decoration back. Maybe when we complete this ritual, I can have one sent for you. Just having a reminder is what helps me on my day-to-day duties. Shall we continue?"

"Yes, please, Janeway Captain! How gracious of you to give me my very own...what did you call it? Inner Earring?" The repulsive alien whose appearance would have caused young Ensign Kim to vomit uncontrollably handed the comm device back with an impossibly enormous grin. She was now looking more and more like a little child, clapping her three hands together in random sequence. "For your kindness and generosity, I give you twice the amount of raw dilithium crystals I promised. Now," she suddenly squinted her eyes until they were narrow slits, "is there something you would like to tell me?"

B'Elanna had slipped the comm back in her ear and was waiting for the captain's orders. Double dilithum crystals was wonderful. Now she just wanted to end this so she could go home to her ship and use her reward!

Janeway heard the subtle shift in the ambassador's voice, and it worried her. "Ask her what she means."

B'Elanna turned to the woman before her and tried to look as sweet as she could master. "I don't understand what you mean?"

"You know exactly what I mean," she said knowingly, leaning in towards the captain, her fetid breath sneaking its way into Janeway's nostrils, "B'elanna!" She winked.

B'Elanna froze. Was this a trick? How did this alien know about the switch. "What dies my chief engineer have to do with anything?" B'Elanna asked, trying to sound innocent.

Janeway's thoughts were racing. Did the earpiece give them away after all? She waited with B'Elanna to hear what the ambassador had to say, though she had to fight down the urge to run to the bridge, hail the alien ship, and try to take charge of the situation. B'Elanna was doing fine; she could handle herself.

"My friend from Quadrant Alpha, come with me and all will be explained," the alien smiled sweetly taking both of the captain's hands with the three of her own and ushered her into yet another chamber where the alien engineer B'elanna worked with yesterday, who showed her the raw dilithium crystals, stood waiting. She regarded the alien, whom she had come to know as A'del.

"Good to see you again, B'elanna. You performed admirably."

"What is going on?" Janeway asked, more to herself than to B'Elanna.

A'del was smiling at B'Elanna, ut B'Elanna wasn't smiling back. What was this guy talking about. "I'm sorry. You must be mistaken. My name is Captain Janeway. What's yours and can you please tell me what's going on here." She really wanted to yell and scream, "if this the way you treat your friends, I'm glad I'm not your enemy! Return me to my ship at once!" but that wasn't an option. So, instead she just stood there, quietly.
