A'del chuckled.

"While you were busy analyzing the purity of the raw dilithium crystal samples I brought you yesterday," he began stroding back and forth, "and while your captain was talking to the Ambassador, we were actually performing a ritual to swap your minds."

He looked at the captain out of the corner of his five eyes to see her reaction.

"WHAT?" Hopefully Janeway's aghast reaction didn't hurt B'Elanna's eardrums. In all their time in the Delta Quadrant, none of the bizarre happenings had ever been done on purpose by seemingly benevolent aliens. "Why?" She prepared herself to order a beam-out for Torres in the event that the next words out of the alien's mouth were hostile.

"Why," B'Elanna asked, echoing the captain's question. It was important to get down to the heart of the matter before the captain decided to beam her off the ship. It seemed the time to come clean about the switch. "A'del, yes I am B'Elanna. So I ask again, why? Why switch the minds of the captain and myself? What could you gain by doing so?"

Torres: It was pretty boring, until Ensign Farley started snoring and then no one could keep a straight face. Of course, the Doctor wasn't at all amused.
Paris: Oo! Hockey!
Torres: It was a shame that we had to cut the lecture short, but the warp core overloaded and then the Borg invaded and we were all assimilated.
Paris: Ah ha.
Torres: You haven't heard a single thing I've said, have you?

"The switch was for your gain, not ours."

"Yesterday, when I met with you, you seemed to be so caught in your work, very serious about being right all the time that you ignored all the jokes I was cracking. We figured you needed a break from all that."

"And you thought this was funny!" her voice rose higher than intended. "This has been a nightmare! I'm an engineer, not a diplomat. It's like asking a doctor to be a brick layer! I have had no fun, and neither has the captain." B'Elanna took a deep breathe, calming herself down slightly.

So the interfering aliens had good intentions. That was a new one. And Janeway had to admit, not having to participate in these particular cultural rituals wasn't that much of a disappointment.

The mud on the captain's uniform was now beginning to harden.

"Come on, B'elanna. You've done so well so far. This is the last test, you're almost there! And soon this nightmare will be over." A'del cracked another smile. "Just feel the tension breaking away from your body, all the stress flowing out. You can do it, B'elanna!"

Janeway blinked. There was no mention of this part in the cultural documents. The mud ritual was supposed to be the end of it. She quickly accessed the database and began searching through the information, wondering if she had somehow missed it.

"What must I do," she growled as her shouldars burned from the stress.

There was nothing. "I can't help you with this one, B'Elanna."

Great! So she was alone. Could this get any worse.

Just as she thought this the mud around her chest began to harder and it became hard to breath. So yes, things could get worse!

Janeway heard a change in Torres' breathing, and it worried her. Not being able to see what was going on was incredibly frustrating. "B'Elanna? Are you all right?"

Did the captain really expect her to answer! She coughed loudly trying to get a little air back in her lungs. "A'del.... what's ha.... ppening?"
