ooc: Not sure if that is possible.

Torres: It was pretty boring, until Ensign Farley started snoring and then no one could keep a straight face. Of course, the Doctor wasn't at all amused.
Paris: Oo! Hockey!
Torres: It was a shame that we had to cut the lecture short, but the warp core overloaded and then the Borg invaded and we were all assimilated.
Paris: Ah ha.
Torres: You haven't heard a single thing I've said, have you?

NPC Conductor
The entire party stopped and stared at B'Elanna and the conductor, their ears perked up and attentively turned toward their leader, perhaps waiting to gauge his reaction.

The conductor blinked at her a few times. "You disapprove of our gift?" he asked slowly.

B'Elanna knew she had overstepped big time, but there was no back peddling this time. "Sir, I think the gift of music is beautiful. But forcing others to use music the way you do makes it no longer a gift. It becomes a curse. Our Doctor loves to sing. Some of the ship does as well. However, those that sing don't do it all the time. Some times a song is not what one needs to express themselves."

"Well said" Chaim thought. If she was going to speak up, at least she had done so appropriately!

ooc: Sorry for the delay!

"From what we've learned from your thoughts, you rarely use music to communicate except in extremely formal settings. Other cultures never use song. Why would you not welcome our gift as an enrichment to your lives?"

Being that the cat was already out of the bag, and being a musical man himself, Lt. Rezit decided to step in.

"Perhaps because it happened so suddenly. Not being used to using music in such a way it was a bit of a shock when it happened so suddenly, and without any warning. Perhaps in the future you may want to consider making contact with your chosen recipients before giving your gift of music."

NPC Conductor

The conductor, well aware that the group of his people were listening to everything, pursed his lips and scratched one ear with the other. Despite himself, he liked these strangers, and he wanted very much to keep the peace with them. Still, he wasn't sure it would do to be remembered as the conductor that stopped the centuries-old tradition of giving music. "We may consider your suggestion. At the very least, we will consider that there are forms of music we ourselves do not enjoy, such as your engineering."

B'Elanna began to walk again towards the turbolift. "Is there a way that you can teach the gift of music, instead of just forcing it on others." Yes, maybe the word force was too strong, but she couldn't think of a better word. (ooc: AKA I couldn't think of a word at 2 in the morning!) "If you teach this wonderful gift, then others can enjoy its beauty without having to constantly sing."

"The gift is temporary," the Conductor said. "After a few weeks, we stop imposing our musical thoughts into those of others, in the hopes that they will choose to sing on their own. Unfortunately, no one has ever returned to thank us." His ears dropped noticeably.

With the damage done, Chaim saw no further harm in continuing this train of thought.

"I've been thinking" he started tentatively, making sure to keep his mind soft and non-threatening, "what if we or someone else had given you our gift of talking, would you appreciate it?"

The tone and body language was meant to be non-offensive, and Chaim hoped he had been successful in portraying that.

The conductor snorted. "As you have seen, we are capable of non-musical speech."

ooc: I need to come up with some sort of twist so that this story has a plot... once we get to the bridge, I'll start things rolling.

ooc: How about the conductor being deposed by his 2nd down below and the whole thing starting up again?

ooc: I had another idea, but we can incorporate that, too. :)

ic:
Meanwhile, on the Bridge...

A ship of unfamiliar design appeared on sensors. While the identity of the people inside couldn't be inferred, the number of weapons on the vessel clearly indicated that it was a warship.

Janeway was just about to try to hail them when the turbolift doors opened and Lt. Torres and Lt. Rezit entered with the singing entourage in tow.

NPC Conductor
The concoductor's ears perked up as he spotted the ship on the viewscreen. "Ah! Those are the people to whom the second choir imparted our gift one week ago!"
