ooc: Thanks! I was going to bring in the holocaust but then thought it was too much.

Torres: It was pretty boring, until Ensign Farley started snoring and then no one could keep a straight face. Of course, the Doctor wasn't at all amused.
Paris: Oo! Hockey!
Torres: It was a shame that we had to cut the lecture short, but the warp core overloaded and then the Borg invaded and we were all assimilated.
Paris: Ah ha.
Torres: You haven't heard a single thing I've said, have you?

ooc: Good post!

ic: NPC Aliens
The Second Conductor stared at B'Elanna for a moment in stunned silence. The ears of the rest of the group bobbed up and down, suggesting they were sharing some telepathic communication. The Conductor regarded B'Elanna with an expression of awe, and perhaps of respect as well.

Slowly the Second turned to Lt. Rezit. "Do you agree with her?"
Being "slightly" more diplomatic than his half-Klingon counterpart Chaim was stuck between a rock and a hard place. Even if
the Captain didn't do anything to her for this, he was sure going to! He slowly turned to them, his mental gears
working overtime.

"I think I'd say I agree with her to a point- please let me explain. I am genuinely interested in your culture and I agree
that it must be quite amazing to have harmonies such as yours. Indeed I would be very happy to visit your world and learn
your ways, and I'd most probably enjoy myself as I, myself am musical in your sense as well. If we were to do that and then
you were to offer us your gift to try for several days I'm sure we might enjoy ourselves as well. However..." Here he paused
for a moment, releasing a long breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding,

"However I agree with her that by forcing your gift on others without regard to whether or not they may wish it you cause
many who may have otherwise enjoyed what you have to offer to become confused as to why they're suddenly changing, and they
could become resentful once they find out you're the cause. You see,"

he started forming his next idea, and started speaking a little faster and with more confidence at this point-

"You see, what you have to offer, whether good or bad, is a life-changing event, and people don't like such decisions being made for them once they've reached an age where they can make such decisions themselves. This is why forcing such a thing- even if it's the best thing that can ever happen to them- can make people feel like they've had their privacy invaded and will make them feel inherently resentful. Perhaps if you were to make contact with new friends, get to know them first and find what they consider fun, and only then offer them what you have to offer you'll find that people will be more thankful. Yes, not everyone will accept, but those that do will enjoy it.

There are other things you have to take into consideration also. My religion forbids me from hearing females sing, and for the past little while I've been forced to listen to just that. This has caused me undue problems, and while I may have enjoyed your gift if some caveats had been added, you never allowed us time to explain ourselves, and you just pushed it on us.

So while I see why you may wish to do good and I see that you have only the best intentions, I have to agree with Lt. Torres about your methods."

He ended his little speech slightly nervous, hoping he had presented the sides fairly and in a way that could give them a graceful way to back out without losing face while giving them enough rope to leave them- and other species- alone in the future.

The Conductor regarded the two engineers in a new light. They were the first to locate the source of the gift, and while their reaction was nothing like what his people expected, in a way, he thought it might be better. With little to no outside contact, his people had become very set in their ways. Perhaps it was time they evaluated their policies with input from those they affected.

The Second frowned. "What you say makes sense..." he said slowly, "But it undermines everything we have stood for for many decades."

The Conductor turned to his second. "Those new arrivals out there," he pointed out the viewport, "Are not nearly as understanding as these visitors. We should listen to the Voyager choir or those who are offended might destroy us."

The Second appeared indecisive. "This is your fault," he accused Torres and Rezit. "You've now upset the harmony amongst our own people!"

"Many years ago," the Conductor interrupted, "Our people found music in discord as well as harmony, not unlike how the Voyager choir finds music in machinery. There may be harmonies yet unheard if we allow ourselves to change."

"But..." the Second trailed off.

"I will bring these thoughts to the attention of the Conducting Board," the Conductor told B'Elanna.

B'Elanna had new found respect for Rezit as she heard him speak. Yes, his way was a little.... calmer then hers, but the Lt. did a fine job.

As did the Conductor. "Sir, I'm pleased to hear that you are going to discuss this issue. I know its hard to change a life style, but sometimes you need to. Now, sir, what can I do to help?"

"See?" the Conductor said to the Second, "They want to help us."

The Second waved an ear in acceptance, somewhat begrudgingly.

The Conductor gestured to the window. "We have had almost no contact with outsiders. What will those in the other ship do?"

"It's hard to tell. I don't know what the race is or how they might react to your.. gift. However, you can choice how to react. You can make all the difference."

"How do you suggest we react? It seems the second choir has already stopped giving them the gift. Perhaps they noticed in the aliens' minds that they were unwelcome."

For the first time since entering the ready room, the Second seemed to agree with the Conductor in soliciting the engineers' advice. "It is true, we have never encountered people who are quite so angry before."

B'Elanna took a step towards the Conductor. "So you say that you are sorry. Its hard, but some times its what you have to do."

"It will be up to the Conducting Council to decide if we are sorry," said the Conductor. "For that, I must return to my world immediately. I will leave the Second with you to monitor the situation here."

The Second looked like he would very much like to protest this arrangement, but kept quiet.
