NPC Conductor
"I see."

They reached the transporter room. "Once I have spoken with the conducting council, I will contact you again," the Conductor said. "Please ensure that the Second Conductor is not disruptive."

Meanwhile, in the briefing room...
Janeway entered the room into the middle of B'Elanna's conversation with the Second. "It seems we've calmed them down," she informed them, "but they're still unhappy. They want to speak with you, Lieutenant, and with Lieutenant Rezit, since the two of you have had the most contact with our guests."

ooc: No, you're correct Chaim, it's a new species.

ic: NPC Conductor
The Conductor's ears stood up sharply. "How violent do you think they may become?" The entourage began bobbing their heads at one another as they conversed telepathically.

NPC Second
"Our music is what defines us as a people. Our gift has been our only interaction with the rest of the galaxy for many decades. This is who we are. It bothers me for the same reason you would be bothered if you could never repair an engine again."
B'Elanna had risen for her seat at the moment the captain had entered the room. "I'll be right there, ma'am," she said before turning back to the Second. "To address your last point, sir, yes I would be upset if I could never repair an engine. However, I would never force another ship to have me repair their engines. There are races that don't want help, or have specific ways to fix problems. Yes, we offer our help, but never ever, force it. It's better to be teacher than to become a master over someone. You all should teach, not force."

Torres: It was pretty boring, until Ensign Farley started snoring and then no one could keep a straight face. Of course, the Doctor wasn't at all amused.
Paris: Oo! Hockey!
Torres: It was a shame that we had to cut the lecture short, but the warp core overloaded and then the Borg invaded and we were all assimilated.
Paris: Ah ha.
Torres: You haven't heard a single thing I've said, have you?

NPC Second
The Second looked thoughtful. "Perhaps you have a point. I will consider your ideas."

Noting that Rezit seemed to have escorted the rest of the group back to the transporter room, Janeway tapped her commbadge. :comm: Janeway to Rezit, report to the bridge. :comm:

Having just seen the conductor off, Chaim nodded.

I've got to stop doing that he thought as his hand reached for his badge.

:comm: Yes, Ma'am, on my way. :comm: He thanked the transport chief and headed for the nearest turbolift.

When Chaim arrived on the bridge, Janeway and B'Elanna were already there, facing the not-so-angry, yet still grumpy-looking alien on the viewscreen.

"Finally!" he exclaimed as Chaim entered, though it had only been a few minutes. "This must be the other engineer who you said met with the Singers. I am Captain Taro. The Ruut empire has withdrawn its challenge against the planet, for now. Please explain to me your interactions with them."

B'Elanna looked at Janeway. "Permission to speak, Captain?"

Chaim almost raised an eyebrow but made sure not to show it, as he had been trained to maintain his military bearing. Would Torres be able to do a better job than the Captain, especially considering her, er, known affinity for less-than-affectionate diatribes?

Janeway nodded to Torres, having been unable to get any further information out of the alien since he began demanding to speak to the people who'd met the Singers.

B'Elanna took a step forward. "My name is Lt. B'Elanna Torres. I am the Chief Engineer of this ship. Captain Taro, I am sure that Captain Janeway has informed you that we were... affected just like you were. We were singing song tunes for some time. Lucky, we were able to come across the people of this planet.

I have spoken to the leader, known as the Conductor. After we spoke for some time, the Conductor has decided to rethink their gift of music. He and many of his group of speaking with the rest of the leaders. They are ready to change. Will you allow them to change?"

NPC Taro
The alien captain considered for a moment. "They have agreed not to force their so-called music upon us again? We found their lack of artistry in composition very grating upon our ears. If they will keep their attempted warblings to themselves, we will call off our declaration of war."

"I can not speak for them. What I can say is that they are considering changing."

"Then, provided the Singers decide not to interfere with our people again, we will let their transgression pass. But any further aural assault will be taken as an act of war! We take our music very seriously, as I'm sure you do, B'Elanna Torres and," he nodded toward Chaim, "other engineer."

"Thank you for understanding." B'Elanna paused for a moment. "Captain Taro, maybe the Conductor would like to hear your music? Maybe, by sharing what you have, you can help these people grow and change."

ooc: I think that would be the perfect finale song!

NPC Taro
Captain Taro brightened visibly at the suggestion. "We are always proud to share our achievements with less musically-attuned races! If the Singers will hear us, we will show them the sound of a good composition!"

In a moment of perfect timing, a computer bleep informed the bridge that they were being hailed from the planet's surface.
