Midgar is the capital city and power base of the Shinra Electric Power Company. It is the most technologically advanced location ever constructed on the planet of Gaia. It consists of a large circular structure supported above the ground by eight reactors and a central pillar, with various other supports around the city. On top of the structure lies the city proper, divided into eight sectors, while underneath it on the ground lies a large slum; created by the city's unfortunate and downtrodden. It is mentioned Midgar was once eight individual towns, but as Midgar came into existence their names were forgotten in favor of referring to the different areas as sectors.

Kalm is a village located outside of Midgar. Unlike the bustling metropolis nearby, Kalm is a quiet hamlet with only a few shops, a pub, and an inn. The economy is based upon mining in the Mythril Mine, but due to recent activities of Midgar Zolom outside the mines, work has stopped.

Junon is a major city and military installation. It used to be a peaceful fishing village before Shinra Electric Power Company built the new city right beside it. The city's elevated airfield was built directly above the old village, blocking out the sun and polluting the surrounding seas. As a result, the once-thriving fishing industry has died out, but the economically deprived village soldiers on, dominated by its larger neighbor.

Fort Condor is a fort near Junon. A large condor tends to make its home on top of the reactor, much to the annoyance of Shinra.

Racing chocobos are bred here. The Chocobo Lure, a necessary Materia for catching chocobos, can be purchased from Choco Billy for 2,000 gil.

The Temple of the Ancients was, built by the Cetra thousands of years ago. It is virtually inaccessible.

Mideel is a hot springs town in the southern part of the Planet, known for being a place where the Lifestream is close to the surface.

Banora Village is the hometown of the famous first class soldiers Genesis and Angeal. It is the only location of which Banora apples grow because of the village's rich soil, as in the area Lifestream runs near the surface.

Once a proud, powerful and independent nation state known for its peoples' honor and mystique, after the Wutai War against the Shinra Electric Power Company it fell to serving as a simple tourist attraction and resort, no longer serving as a global power. However some individual pockets of rebellion still seek to regain the countries' old glory and numerous rebel factions sometimes use Wutai as a base of operations. The nations' guardian deity is Leviathan and as such the god's likeness appears throughout the nations' architecture through banners, flags, and statue representations. Wutai Village is the primary settlement on the nation

Nibelheim is a small mountain village located at the foot of Mt. Nibel, across the river from Cosmo Canyon. A Mako Reactor on the nearby Mt. Nibel provides the town with power and Shinra Electric Power Company owns a manor on the town outskirts that was the base for the company's scientific research for many years before it was left abandoned.

North Corel is a town at the foot of Mt. Corel. It was built by the survivors from Corel, which was destroyed by Shinra Electric Power Company. Since it is a relatively new settlement, North Corel is just a collection of crude dwellings, with little of the advanced technology that makes up human civilization on the Planet. It serves mostly as a stepping ground for the resort of Gold Saucer.

Rocket Town is a town north of Nibelheim built around the launch site of the Shinra No. 26 rocket, part of Shinra Electric Power Company's space program.

Cosmo Canyon is also known as the "Valley of the Fallen Star". It is a pilgrimage site for those who wish to pursue the study of Planet life, and home to an observatory from which the Planet and its surroundings can be studied. The members of the Leonine Tribe are the guardians of this land. The Shildra Inn serves a popular drink named after the Cosmo Candle, the guardian fire which always burns.

Gongaga is a foothill town, located south of Gold Saucer. Due to a disaster, the town has been badly damaged. As a visitor enters, they will see a fork in the road; the left path leads to the town, and the right leads to the burned-out Mako Reactor.

Costa del Sol is a coastal resort town that also serves as the main port on the western continent. Because it is close to Mt. Corel, which is filled with petrification-inflicting monsters, the town specializes in making Softs. President Shinra's summer cottage, the Villa Cloud, serves as a popular tourist attraction, and a hotspot for paparazzi. Anyone can take the cargo ship back to Junon after having acquired a buggy for 100 gil at the docks. The buggy can be taken aboard the ship.

The Gold Saucer is a towering amusement park built over the ruins of Old Corel, it is a world famous tourist attraction operated by Dio. The games in the Gold Saucer use Gold Points as a currency instead of gil, a currency only won in games or traded for outside the saucer. The Gold Saucer is divided up into seven attractions, most of which consist of games.

Cactus Island is an island just south of Cosmo Canyon. It is the only place where Cactuers are found (save for the deserts of Corel Prison).

Icicle Inn is located on the frozen area of the Northern Continent, in an area referred to by the Cetra as the Knowlespole. To the north is the Great Glacier, and to the south is Modeoheim. The town functions as a resort because it snows year round. The constant cold temperatures are not due to the location, which is somewhat polar, but because of the town's proximity to the North Craterwhere the Planet uses a large amount of Spirit Energy to try to heal itself. It's a great area for snowboarding.

Modeoheim is located slightly to the south of the Icicle Inn. It seems to have sprung up when many Shinra scientists and engineers gathered to the Modeo ravine when the site was named for Mako extraction. The town seems to have not been in use for some time and is completely abandoned.

Bone Village is an archaeological dig site on the northern continent. The Bone Village is a useful place to visit for the double growth armor they sell and for the few unique items that can be dug up by amateur archaeologists or hobbyists.

The Forgotten Capital also known as the Forgotten City and the City of the Ancients, is a ruined city; the primary capital of the ancient Cetra civilization, but has been an abandoned ruin for a long time. It is located on the arctic Northern Continent inside Corel Valley, beyond the Sleeping Forest, and far to the east of Icicle Inn. Many of the remaining houses still contain furniture and artifacts indicating the area appears just as it did when it was abandoned long ago, making it the ideal location for study of the ancient civilization.

North Crater, also known as the Northern Cave Crater, or simply Crater, is a geographical location in the Icicle Area on the Northern Continent of the Planet. It was created when an asteroid or meteorite fell thousands of years ago. This, in tandem with the continent's titular proximity to the Planet's North Pole, makes most of the Northern Continent a frozen desert. Because the crater is such an enormous wound to the Planet, huge amounts of Spirit Energy are brought around it to heal it.

The Round Island, also known as the North Eastern Island is a location on the northeast of the Northern Continent. It can only be accessed by using the gold chocobo. Inside the cave in the forest on the island is the Knights of the Round Materia. The island can be seen from airship, but one cannot land on it. Rumors that Wutai Ninja have a secret base here are a common joke among SOLDIERs.

Goblin Island is a large island covered in forests, located Northeast of the Kalm Area in the Icicle Area. Native to the land are the Goblins, a race of expert fighters who dwell in the Goblin Forest. From them, one can obtain the Zeio Nut, a crucial item in advanced chocobo breeding.
