Evolution refers to both the natural and artificial processes that allow a Digimon to grow and develop. Both natural and artificial evolution rely on the Digimon's DigiCore. Each Digimon has a list of possible evolutions, each one with a set of prerequisites. These prerequisites often involve a Digimon's File Attribute, Element, and Data Level. Most evolution prerequisites differ from Digimon to Digimon, even for the same evolution. Some require certain events to have happened to a Digimon or a certain item to be used on the Digimon. Natural Evolution These evolutions are permanent, as the Digimon does not revert to a lower stage after combat. These are the only types of evolutions that have a Data Level prerequisite. Once a Digimon has met all the prerequisites, including Data Level, the Tamer may choose to have the Digimon evolve. Items that are part of the prerequisite (Crest Shards, Digimentals, Dark Spirals) disappear from the Tamer's inventory, as it is now part of the Digimon. If at some point the Digimon is forced to revert to a lower form, i.e died and turns into a Digitama, the items take physical form and drop nearby. Artificial Evolution Artificial evolutions are temporary, as they only last for 5 minutes or until the encounter is over. Different Digivices allow for different methods of artificial evolution, the most common of which involves DigiSoul. The Digimon only needs to reach the prerequisites for a higher evolution, except the Data Level, and the Tamer loses an amount of DigiSoul depending on the evolution stage the Digimon is temporarily evolving into. At the end of combat or until 5 minutes has passed, the Digimon revert to it's original form and any item used in the temporary evolution returns to the Tamer. More: Natural Evolutions Certain evolutions, such as Matrix Evolution, requires the Tamer to fuse with the Digimon. When the Tamer chooses to allow a Digimon to naturally evolve into a form that would normally require the Tamer to fuse with the Digimon, the fuse prerequisite is dropped, due to lasting repercussions. If an evolution would require two or more Digimon to be fused, they remain separate if the evolution would be permanent. Edited by TheCanadian, Apr 19 2014, 07:37 PM.

More: Artificial Evolutions All Artificial Evolutions are temporary, usually lasting up to 5 minutes or until combat ends, whichever is shorter. While in this new form, they gain the attributes, attacks, and even mindset of the higher form. So if a normally pacifistic and weak Digimon evolves into something mindless and violent, it begins acting as such. Although this makes evolution a frightening experience, it is often necessary in order to protect the Tamer. Digimon that fuse due to Jogress or Matrix Evolutions retain their separate personalities, but with a common goal in mind. If two fused Digimon begin to disagree, the evolution may end prematurely.
