UNIT ROSTERS Key: generic - model shared across more than one culture HRU - unit restricted to specific region (hidden resource unit) RM - Recruitable merc Units are recruitable via the standard recruitment buildings for their type unless specified otherwise. SAXONS (Wessex, Mercia and Northumbria) The Saxon roster is infantry-based, with little cavalry but decent ranged troops and excellent melee infantry, more than capable of taking on the Norsemen. Peasants (Chiv Peasants) Generic Basic "cannon-fodder" infantry with spears, maybe a little stronger than CA has them, but still weak. Spearmen (Chiv Saxon Fyrd) Generic Generic line spearmen, as in vanilla. Historically should probably have javelins, but without them the roster is more diverse. Fyrdmen (ATW Hundradeflocc - not ideal, ATW has better Saxon spears but not w/javelins) High quality line spearmen with javelins and spears, one of the best units available in terms of trade-off between performance and cost etc. Armoured Spearmen (AoVaF Geirrman -reskin) Generic Generic armoured upgrade of the Spearmen. Butscarles RM Lithsmen (Chiv Viking Warriors) Northumbria only RM Recruitable Viking mercenary unit, light-armoured infantry with axe and shield, good intermediate shock troops. Select Fyrd (AoVaF Armoured Fyrdmen) Wessex only Elite, armoured line spearmen also with javelins. Capable in defence and attack (maybe replace Armoured Spearmen with these for Wessex, they are all-around better) Saxon Thegns (AoVaF King's Huskarls -reskin) Quality armoured swordsmen of the Saxon minor nobility, rode to battle but fought on foot. Should ideally be somewhat cheaper/easier to get than most equivalent units. Royal Hirth (Still looking for the ideal model - ATW Billweras/Gesith are impressive but not quite right IMO) Elite armoured swordsmen. The Hird, or hearth-troop, is the bodyguard of an English king, composed of his best and most loyal warriors, who are given the best equipment. They evolved into the Huscarls of the Hastings era. Slingers (AoVaF Saxon Slinger) Saxon armies utilized a wide variety of ranged weapons, and although they never dominated they were always used effectively, usually to soften up the opposition. Straightforward slinger unit. Archers (AoVaF Saxon Archer) Generic Standard British archer unit, much like in vanilla. Saxon Horsemen (Chiv Militia Cavalry -reskin) Saxon light cavalry, better than Danish cavalry but still outclassed overall by Welsh horse. Armed with spears. Marcher Horsemen (ATW Horsmen -reskin) Mercia only Essentially a clone of Welsh Horsemen. Years of border warfare with the Welsh kingdoms have given the Mercians an appreciation of the value of light cavalry. VIKINGS (Danes and Norwegians) Tier 1 Peasants (based on AoVaF Trell Spearmen) Generic Little more than peasants armed with spears. Recruitable from core building. Leidangr (based on AoVaF Svirrur) Danes only Lower-class freemen, often the crew of longships. Throwing spears and light spear. Recruitable from ports. Orcadian Infantry (based on ATW Pictish Spearmen-reskin required) Norwegians only / HRU Longer spear infantry unit from the north of Scotland and the isles, indigenous influences. Spearmen (based on AoVaF Viking Spearmen) Generic Standard spearmen. Tier 2 Armoured Spearmen (based on AoVaF Geirrmen) Generic Armoured upgrade of the above. Vikingr (based on Chiv Norman Axemen-reskin required) The actual "vikings" - Light armour, high morale assault troops with daneaxes. Norse Archers (based on AoVaF Viking Archer) Norse archers were of somewhat higher quality overall than the average British archer, though they rarely used them to full effect. Hand axe as secondary. Danish Horsemen (based on ATW Cnithas) Danes only / requires horse resource Weak Viking cavalry unit, for scouting, pursuing etc Tier 3 Norse Huskarls (based on ATW Wraeccan) Classic Norse heavy infantry, mail-armoured troops with axes & swords. Berserkers (based on AoVaF Berserkers) Norwegians only Wild-eyed pagan religious fanatics. "Armoured" in bearskin, v high morale, impervious to pain and so on. Swords. Bodyguard Hirdmenn (based on AoVaF Norse Huskarl) Bodyguard unit, the elite huskarls. Finest swords, axes and armour available. CELTS (Irish, Welsh and Alba) Welsh The Welsh have a broad selection of cavalry and also the finest archers in the game, but are relatively weak in infantry, particularly melee infantry. Tier 1 Peasants (Chiv Kernbannal) Generic Basic "cannon-fodder" infantry with pitchforks, maybe a little stronger than CA has them, but still weak. Spearmen (ATW Bonheddwyr -reskin) Generic Generic line spearmen, as in vanilla. Historically should probably have javelins, but without them the roster is more diverse. Tier 2 Longspearmen (ATW Berafelwyr Merionydd) Higher quality spearmen with long, two-handed spears, form a close defensive formation. Armoured Spearmen (AoVaF Geirrman -reskin) Generic Generic armoured upgrade of the Spearmen. Archers (ATW Helwyr) Generic Standard British archer unit, much like in vanilla. Light Horsemen (ATW Marchogluoedd) Skirmisher cavalry unit, shared between all Celtic factions. Weak in melee but effective skirmishers with their javelins, as well as pursuers etc. Tier 3 Welsh Infantry (ATW Campwyr) Elite, armoured sword unit. Small unit size and expensive, generally rarer than for the other factions. Welsh Longbowmen (Chiv Welsh Longbowmen) Should have bonuses to concealment and ambush, they preferred this tactic where possible, also should be fairly capable in melee. Best archer unit in the game. Welsh Horsemen (ATW Horsmen -reskin) Superior light cavalry with some armour and javelins. Capable skirmishers but also can be used in melee in the right conditions (flank attacks etc.) Teulu (Chiv Saxon Thegn -reskin) Bodyguard unit, the word literally means "family" and refers to the life guard of a Welsh prince. Mail-armoured medium cavalry with long spears and swords, v. effective against other cavalry and capable in melee, best cavalry in the game. Note that they are still only medium, true shock cavalry capable of frontal charges comes only with the Normans. Alba The most balanced of the Celtic rosters, no obvious weaknesses but lacks the strong archers of the Welsh or specialized infantry of the Irish. Tier 1 Gaelic Peasants (ATW Sleaceithernel) Alternative peasant unit for Alba and Ireland, slightly stronger (for the price) and armed with darts. Spearmen (Ideally AoVaF Sleanaghta, or ATW Curadha -reskin) Generic Generic line spearmen, as in vanilla. Historically should probably have javelins, but without them the roster is more diverse. Tier 2 Longspearmen (ATW Schiltron) Higher quality spearmen with long, two-handed spears, form a close defensive formation (or a schiltron in this case) Armoured Spearmen (AoVaF Geirrman -reskin) Generic Generic armoured upgrade of the Spearmen. Light Cavalry (ATW Marchan) Skirmisher cavalry unit, shared between all Celtic factions. Weak in melee but effective skirmishers with their javelins, as well as pursuers etc. Archers (ATW Saiogdaer) Generic Standard British archer unit, much like in vanilla. Tier 3 Pictish Infantry (ATW Ludodaer) Pictish swordsmen, unarmoured but tough, with a decent charge. Gaelic Nobles (Ideally AoVaF Arras, or ATW Arras) Armoured heavy infantry showing Norse influences. the finest Celtic infantry and the only Celtic unit capable of taking on Norse and Saxon huscarls directly. Mormaers (ATW Mormaers) "Heavy light" cavalry of the Pictish nobility. Very fast and effective light cavalry with good armour. Royal Cavalry (ATW Cubrieachor Barr -reskin, or Chiv Hobilars -reskin) Bodyguard unit, household retainers of the King of Scots, armed with long spears and javelins. Similar to Teulu, though the latter are more melee focused and slightly superior overall. Significantly heavier cavalry than anything the Norse or AS field. Irish The most differentiated roster, as befits the most isolated (and thus unique) culture we have. Weak at range (no archers, though they have slingers) and limited cavalry but a good selection of infantry, well suited to fighting against the Norse. Tier 1 Gaelic Peasants (ATW Sleaceithernel) Alternative peasant unit for Alba and Ireland, slightly stronger (for the price) and armed with darts. Kerns (Chiv Gaenaghta) Light spearmen armed additionally with javelins. Note that they are line spearmen rather than skirmishers, albeit of a lower quality. Tier 2 Bonnachts (Ideally AoVaF Sleanaghta, or ATW Curadha -reskin) Quality spearmen with heavy, AP throwing spears and reasonable armour. Dependable line infantry which form the backbone of the Irish armies. Armoured Spearmen (AoVaF Geirrman -reskin) Generic Generic armoured upgrade of the Spearmen. Slingers (ATW Maiobhanaghta) Replace Archers for the Irish, levied hunters who have some military training. Slings are poor at penetrating chainmail and other heavy armour, but have better range than a bow (in skilled hands anyway) Light Cavalry (ATW Guirran) Skirmisher cavalry unit, shared between all Celtic factions. Weak in melee but effective skirmishers with their javelins, as well as pursuers etc. Swordsmen (Ideally AoVaF Claiomhnaghta, or ATW Riastarte -reskin) Effectively an offensive version of the Bonnachts, armed with mid-length swords. Moderate armour and good morale and the added punch of the javelins make them formidable offensive infantry. Tier 3 Heroes (Chiv Norman Axemen -reskin or Chiv Hueste -reskin) Champions and elite individual warriors of a clan, used to lead charges, punch through shieldwalls and also to fight the duels which often prefixed a pitched battle. Like the Vikingr, lightly armoured but powerful two-handed axemen. Monks (Probably need a new model) Monks and other clerics were often present in Celtic battles, but particularly in Ireland where they not infrequently raised and led contingents and even personally fought. More or less like the BI priest units, not fighters but boost morale and have the "Pray" ability etc. Royal Cavalry (ATW Cubrieachor Barr -reskin, or Chiv Hobilars -reskin) Household retainers of a king armed with long spears and javelins. Similar to Teulu, though the latter are more melee focused and slightly superior overall. Significantly heavier cavalry than anything the Norse or AS field. Gaelic Nobles (Ideally AoVaF Arras, or ATW Arras) Bodyguard unit. Armoured heavy infantry showing Norse influences. the finest Celtic infantry and the only Celtic unit capable of taking on Norse and Saxon huscarls directly. (Note that they are the bodyguard for the Irish but not the Scots) Edited by palantir, Aug 14 2009, 08:17 PM.
