Are there any historical battles planned?

btw. in Paeninsula Italica some provicnes have 2 rebels faction assigned in descr_regions - Luciano says that rebels appear randomly sometimes from the first sometimes from the second faction - maybe we could add viking rebels to some regions in England.

I have added two HBs - I think one should be in your build.

I was not aware that you could have 2 rebel factions in the same region...I'll look into it.

well, the game does not complain at having more than one - but only the first has shown up so far; though this may be my syntax.

But, the rebel faction will take the cultural associations so we end up with a rebel Viking army under a rebel Saxon banner.....

Sorry for my delay with the descriptions, I'm still polishing some of them. I have the Norse ones more or less ready so I will post them below, and I hope to have the others finished by mid-week.

{viking_peasant} Peasants

{viking_peasant_descr}
CLASS: Peasant\n\nEvery society has its commonality, and the Scandinavian kingdoms are no exception. Peasants, as everywhere, are farm labourers, craftsmen, thralls, slaves and other "civilians" pressed into military service. While the often harsh conditions of their lives imbue a certain hardiness, they nonetheless lack military training and even equipment. Such men never went on raids or acted as "Vikings", they rather represent the ordinary people fighting in a last defence of their homes and lives.

{viking_spearman} Spearmen

{viking_spearman_descr}
CLASS: Militia\n\nThe basic and most common weapon of all peoples of this era is the spear; inexpensive to construct, easy to use, and surprisingly effective. Spearmen are unarmoured "militia" units with only limited training, often raised to defend settlements against bandits and the inter-community raiding which was all too common in the politically fractured world of Dark Age Britain and Scandinavia. Individually such men stand little chance against experienced warriors, but in large numbers and with even the most rudimentary formation discipline they can prove far more sturdy opponents, forming a wall of spears that frightens horses and can hold even armoured swordsmen at bay... for a time.

{norse_archer} Archers

{norse_archer_descr}
CLASS: Regular\n\nMissiles: 130\20\n\nArchers are an element of Scandinavian armies relatively seldom seen in Britain, and perhaps underutilized, for they are surprisingly effective bowmen. They are a mixture of levies, expert hunters and even trained warriors who often have a variety of bows, ranging from small peasant hunting bows to mighty long warbows, but all are capable and probably outclass the majority of Saxon and Celtic archers, though they will not perform well in melee or against cavalry. Perhaps it is the fault of an aristocratic warrior-dominated society and a relative lack of organized tactical warfare that explains their comparatively infrequent use outside of their homeland.

{norse_archer_descr_short}
Norse Archers are capable bowmen, outclassed by only the very best British archers.\n\nCLASS: Regular (2 exp)

{viking_armoured_spearman} Armoured Spearmen

{viking_armoured_spearman_descr}
CLASS: Regular\n\nA not insignificant development in the evolution of warfare, Armoured Spearmen are "ordinary" spearmen wearing mail armour, something traditionally reserved to career warriors and nobles. Needless to say this greatly increases their durability in combat, and combined with a modicum of experience and superior confidence (one does not entrust such valuable equipment to raw levies, after all) they form a significant all-around upgrade to regular spearmen, if an expensive one. They are the classic "shield-wall" troops, not greatly suited for charges but capable of putting up a stubborn defence of a battle-line against even the most hardened sword or axe-men.

{viking_armoured_spearman_descr_short}
Armoured Spearmen are a signifcant improvement on regular spearmen, not only better armoured but better disciplined as well.\n\nCLASS: Regular (2 exp)

¬----------------

{viking_vikingr} Vikingr

{viking_vikingr_descr}
CLASS: Irregular\n\nVikingr, or "Vikings" are the Scandinavian warriors most familiar to people of the British Isles, though they are neither the most common nor by any means the most powerful. They are raiders, pillagers and explorers, in many ways more seaman than warrior, but ferocious and brave nonetheless. The majority are not nobles or "professional" warriors, nor are they always rich, acquiring the full complement of mail, helm, weapon and shield only after many years of fighting, but what weapons they do have (mostly axes of one kind or another) they wield with considerable skill and enthusiasm, and despite their relatively little protection they can be relied on to fight hard.

{viking_vikingr_descr_short}
The classic "Viking" forces, Vikingr are lightly armoured raiders and shock troops capable of doing great damage with their mighty axes.\n\nCLASS: Irregular (1 exp)

¬----------------

{viking_huskarl} Huskarls

{viking_huskarl_descr}
CLASS: Superior\n\nHuskarlr, or "Housecarls" are the warrior elite of the Norse people, professional warriors in an era of musters and levies. They originated as the household troops and bodyguards of individual princes and nobles, but as the patchworks of kingdoms began to coalesce they evolved into the core of a Scandivian king's forces, the standing army around which the levies and other lesser troops are assembled. Drawn from the highest levels of society, they are equipped with the best weaponry and armour available, and as military service is their primary duty they spend much of their lives honing the skills of war. They are the epitome of Norse martial skill, their prowess known and feared from Connacht to Constantinople.

{viking_huskarl_descr_short}
Huskarls are the highest class of Scandinavian warrior, the epitome of Norse valour.\n\nCLASS: Superior (3 exp)

¬----------------

{viking_bodyguard} Hirdmenn

{viking_bodyguard_descr}
CLASS: Bodyguard\n\nHirdmenn, or hearth-men, are the personal bodyguard of Norse royalty. While they would later evolve into a full medieval "household", in the Dark Ages they are more purely men-at-arms, drawn from among the huscarls. They are the best of the best, the most loyal, reliable and formidable warriors the king can call upon, and often count members of the king's immediate family among them. While their first duty is his protection, they are no ceremonial bodyguard but an elite force which will accompany the king into the thickest fighting, exactly where the king is most often to be found.

{viking_bodyguard_descr_short}
Hirdmenn are an elite even among Huskarls, the very best warriors the king can call upon, and the only ones fitting to accompany him in battle.\n\nCLASS: Bodyguard (4 exp)

¬----------------

{norse_berserker} Berserkers

{norse_berserker_descr}
CLASS: Superior\n\nTerrifying and mysterious above all other Norse warriors are the Berserkers, whose very name is a byword for unstoppable fury. None can say exactly from where or when came the custom of men going into battle without mail or shirt, clad in the skins of bears and wolves, biting their shields and being overtaken by terrible battle-madness. But whether it stems from insanity, the consumption of strange drugs and liqours or is, as they alledge, a gift of Odin All-Father their patron, the berserkergang is terrible to behold, let alone to endure!

{norse_berserker_descr_short}
Berserkers are mysterious warrior-devotees of Odin, clad in animal skins and fighting in a terrifying rage or trance, inhumanly strong and seemingly impervious to fear or pain. \n\nCLASS: Superior (3 exp)

¬----------------

{orcadian_spearman} Orcadian Spearmen

{orcadian_spearman_descr}
CLASS: Regular\n\nNorwegian expansion into the British Isles began with the remote Scottish isles of Shetland and Orkney, which some believe may have had some Norse inhabitants for centuries before the mainland knew them. These remote communities could not stand against the Norse invaders, but often nor were they willing to seek help from the mainland, where many had abandoned the old ways of the "Picts" in favour of the alien Gaelic culture. Having had an established Norse presence for a long time, they have begun to absorb their new rulers. One facet of this process is Norwegian recruiting of islanders for their military forces, and some jarls have found the unfamiliar long spear units to be surprisingly useful on the battlefield.

{orcadian_spearman_descr_short}
Orcadian infantry are indigenous inhabitants of the Northern Isles drafted into the armies of the Norsemen, fighting as long-spearmen.\n\nCLASS: Regular (2 exp)

¬----------------

{danish_leidangr} Leidangr

{danish_leidangr_descr}
CLASS: Irregular\n\nMissiles: 50\3\n\nThe leidang is a levy of the wealthier classes of free-men, intended to quickly assemble a sizeable force equally capable of fighting on land or sea, to defend the homeland from attack but also sometimes for larger-scale seaborne raids and invasions. In the latter case they are organized into ship-sized units, with each community to supply a ship's load of soldiers, and perhaps the ship as well. They are well motivated and well-equipped for a levy, with javelins, shields and spears, but are ultimately a levy still, and cannot defeat Huskarls and other professionals unaided.

{danish_leidangr_descr_short}
Leidangr are the levy of the wealthier peasantry which provides the longship crews and "regular" soldiers of large raids and royal campaigns.\n\nCLASS: Irregular (1 exp)

¬----------------

{danish_horseman} Horsemen

{danish_horseman_descr}
CLASS: Irregular\n\nAlthough nobles often ride into battle, and there is no shortage of horses in Scandinavia, actual cavalry are not an element of a traditional Norse army. But experience fighting against Celtic light horse in the British Isles and the mighty proto-knights of the Carolingian Franks has taught them at least something of the value of swift horsemen. While they are not really intended for actual melee fighting Norse horsemen still make a valuable contribution, scouting, raiding and pursuing routed enemies.

{danish_horseman_descr_short}
Danish Horsemen are an innovation in Viking warfare. Though not the equals of the finest British or Irish cavalry they still add much-needed flexibility to a Danish army.\n\nCLASS: Irregular (1 exp)

¬----------------

I hope the layout is correct and the content in-line with expectations, I do have a weakness for overwrought or lengthy sentences but hopefully it's okay. Also note that some may need a little tweaking as I worked from notes sometimes and some details may differ from the actual game as things stand (eg. Vikingr are described as unarmoured for example) Should not be difficult to fix though. Also note that I have omitted any different description for the "Raider" versions, as I regard them more as a necessary evil of the Horde system than genuine seperate units.

Thx Antagonist. They are very well written.

I did not expect the horde unit descriptions to be different from their parent unit, so no need to mention it! ;)

I made a few minor tweaks but nothing of substance. I look forward to reading the rest later this week.

I assume the spearmen and armoured spearmen can be used for all?

I might think about some norse-archer limitation outside of Scandinavia, or perhaps other devices can be used in EDU to reflect their under-use...

I will be away Friday night until Monday.

If not before, then it would be great if cards and descriptions could be ready for Monday morning so that I can put the build together and unleash the private beta.

Thx for all your work & support! :D

The Last Kingdom looks great - and so near to VI2! Let's hope WotN and Golden Ages all work together as m2 mods so that they do not all fail. All viking-age mods seem to fail. I was trying to work out the other day how many there had been. I may have overlooked some but this was my conclusion:

MTW:

Fury of the Northmen - dead
Britannia Divided - slow/dying?

RTW:

Viking - Total War - dead
Age of Viking and Fanatics - dead
Viking - Total War (not the same as above) - not very active if alive
Viking Invasion II - woohooooo! :)

M2:

Wrath of the Norsemen - slow/dying?
Viking Invasion - The Britannia Campaign - dead
Golden Ages - recently-started, enthusiastic stage, looks like they are biting off more than they can finish imho
The Last Kingdom - looks promising but still newly begun

Did I miss any?

After VI2 is out I will probably allow any active and promising mods use of VI2 stuff (not the content of ATW or CTW without permission from those respective mods of course) - with proper credit obviously. I will also be getting the AoVaF build and making that available as open-source (I need to clean it up as it has lots of vanilla stuff in it that needs removing).

I may also mention all the viking-age mods in the release, maybe even supporting any that are still active/promising at that point.

Not as far as I can see, I have been a long time avid Viking-Age mod watcher and indeed the era seems almost cursed (until now, at least)

Britannia Divided has recently released a basic beta but I don't know if it'll ever be completed, and there was also a much earlier Viking Age Total War for RTW. WotN (which I'm involved in as the lead historian guy) is not dead but is pretty much moribund since none of the remaining enthusiastic members have much graphical ability (sadly some highly capable members dropped out, our best modeller and coder literally disappeared and hasn't logged in in a year)

It always seemed strange to me that this "curse" should be though, as the era seems to be consistently popular with players, even when you restrict it to the British Isles. Perhaps just coincidence...

Some very talented artists in the Ornamentum team, worry is Ornamentum isn't finished yet so wonder if it's another 'bored when things slow down let's start another mod' situation. Looks really nice (if a bit cartoonish) not very gritty..

That's the problem with many mods - enthusiasm over the aesthetics and despair over the coding. I contacted an m2 team recently and gave them a warning about this (though everyone always ignores my advice or downplays it) and they were a bit perplexed as to why a coder was so important....
