Shining eyes overlooked the dusky landscape, blazing with ambition and spirit. An underlying trust lay beneath his dark, rounded eyes. Snorting softly, the dun pony kicked into the air, enjoying every last moment, every last breath of his freedom. Their was just no way to describe it.. except absolutely perfect. Turning on his haunches, the stallion cantered back towards the solo paint shape whose head was turned towards him. As he approached, the mare raised her head and let out a loud, carrying whinny. She turned and trotted to met him. Just as they were close, there was a sound on the gravel road a few short distances away from the clearing.

"CRICKET! CRRRRICC-KITT!" This was a word the pony knew. Whenever it had been called, he was to go to the human and nuzzle against her shoulder, but never too hard. Sometimes this word meant it was time for leather and other materials to be heaved onto his back, a shiny piece of metal stuck in his mouth, and a young, always strange human foal to jump onto his back and pull him in every direction, even the directions he didn't understand. Sometimes it meant it was time for oats and treats, or a nice brushing. Sometimes, the lady had even riden him. Not around the ring, like she did when he was younger, but off into the forest. That had always been nice, and it was secretly what he hoped they would do when he heard the name called. Taking a step forward, the dun stallion had his ears and eyes focused towards the road. Only the growing darkness and the trees between the clearing and the road separated the horses from sight. Then he felt a soft muzzle on his flank. Turning his neck around, the horse his owner's called Cricket saw the paint mare, eyes soft and half-closed, sending him a message that seemed to say, What about me?

Nudging her off as gently as he could, the dun took a few more brisk steps towards the faded voice. And raised his head as if to answer his human. He thought he heard a bit of an unstable crack as the lady called one last time. He was motionless as he heard the car door open and footsteps on the road. His heart beat fast, he knew his owner was standing just a few short yards from where he was, staring back towards him, yet she couldn't see. He longed to call out to her, tell her he was alright. He knew that would make her less upset. But he couldn't move.

He didn't know how long he had been standing there, but he knew some time had past. He heard the keys go into the car and headlights flicked on. Gravel crunched beneath the tires as the car slowly drove away, taking the lady with it. He quivered slightly. A soft nicker behind him, the stallion realized he hadn't moved out of the position with his head raised, jaws parted to call, every muscle in his body tensed. He blinked and relaxed himself, turning back towards the awaiting mare. She nuzzled up under his chin as he stood, eyes still towards the road. Would that be the last he ever saw of the human? He had traded his captive life for this new free one. He knew he had made the right decision. But it still hurt him to see her get upset. Looking down at the soil below him, the pony nuzzled his companion, hoping his lady would feel better soon.
