"Your mother was there for me at a time when no one else was."

---

A scruffy boy stood up as he closed his truck, looking around the dorm room. He sighed. Sixth year was practically over. Tomorrow it was made official, that was when the train would actually be departing. In one hand he was holding a folded parchment. Feeling a bit wistful as he always did at the end of a term, the Gryffindor looked down at it, studying over it's blank surface. He had managed to get permission from the others to take it home over the summer. It was only common sense that he should, given that he was the only one of the four with enough maturity not to loose it or blow it up.

Moony chuckled a little, shaking his sandy brown hair out with his other hand. He could still remember when he had made it, back when the marauders had acquired their name. Back when there was nothing to worry about except the full moon. He waved his wand over the map once, whispering, "I solemnly swear that I am up to no good. " Letters began to appear on the parchment. Carefully, he unfolded it and ran his eyes over it briefly.

Peter was in the courtyard with Sirius. Good. Briefly checking over his other three roommates to make sure they couldn't reach the dorm within the next few minutes, Remus gave a nod of satisfaction. He quickly uttered "mischief managed" and slipped the map into an interior pocket of his robes. Sitting down at the desk, he dipped a quill into the vial of ink and grabbed a spare piece of parchment. For a short while, he simply sat there with the ready quill hovering a millimeter above the paper. Then, words began to form.

To whom it may concern-

I am in need of a bit of guidance. As you can probably tell, this letter is really a shot in the dark, as I have no clue as to who it will end up in the hands of. However, if you are familiar with Wormtail, Moony, Padfoot, and Prongs, I kindly ask you to put this back.

Now then, I know this is kind of a strange request. But if you're interested, I am prepared to help you in return-

Remus quickly took out the map, reequipping it so that he could read it. Peter was headed for the common room. Quickly, he dipped his quill in more ink, rushing to finish the letter before he reached the dorm.

Please excuse the shortness of this letter, but I really must hurry. I hope to write you over the summer, granted you find this by then. My address is at the bottom.

Remus paused on the signature. He was about to sign it as 'Moony.' Perhaps a different code name? Like Jefferson? He had always wanted to be named Jefferson. But no, he supposed he should be honest. It wasn't as if he had a huge reputation to maintain.

Frantically scrawling his address, the werewolf folded the parchment once and scribbled onto the front, 'to whom it may concern.' Dumping the quill back into the shaft, he folded the letter once more and quickly shoved it into his pocket just as the door open. "Hey Wormtail," Remus gave his friend a nod as he ducked out of the room, leaving behind the marauder's map and a puzzled roommate in his hurry.

This was a stupid idea. Why didn't he just give the letter to someone he trusted? Or just tell someone to write him? But this way seemed more... thrilling. Spontaneous. Sophomoric. Walking into the Gryffindor common room, the boy took a quick glance around the room. Everyone in it was too busy sleeping or packing to notice what he was doing. Sitting down in front of the coals that usually kept them all warm during winter nights, he slipping the parchment under one of the black stones, covering it just a bit more so it wasn't as obvious.

Standing up and brushing the black chalky stuff off his hands against his already black robes, Moony gave a sigh of relief. That was part of it, now, whether he was contacted or not, he had a weight off his chest. He had done something about his situation. And now he could wait and see if he got a reply.

Not wanting to think this through any farther, Remus cleared his throat strode back to his room to help Peter with his trunk.

Lily Evans was sitting towards the front of class, as always. Well, not as always, she used to sit near Severus. It wasn't that she was necessarily still mad at him, but there was no way she would let him think what he did was okay. Tapping her fingers on her desk, she let her thoughts roam. Potions was one of her better subjects. Since the lesson in the textbook was pretty much common sense, she would use this class to get her thoughts in order.

She was a Gryffindor. Severus was a Slytherin. That was a problem in and of itself. That made it so they didn't have many classes together, and it was a little bit more of a hassle to arrange things with him, since they didn't have a mutual common room. Now she had time to make more friends within her house.

Clearing her throat, Lily turned a page in her textbook to keep herself from looking like she wasn't paying attention, in case Slughorn happened to be watching. She sighed, tucking a strand of red-gold hair behind her ear. She wished they were a bit more hands-on in this class. Seriously, it seemed Potions was half-textbook, half-cauldron. Her green eyes shifted slightly to the front board, watching as some invisible hand began to write their homework.

She studied it for several moments, in the case that she had time to do it within her busy schedule. She had made the Quidditch team this year as a chaser, although she could have sworn half the people out there were better than her. It was a fun time-killer, but Lily didn't think she'd participate next year. There was way too much drama between the teammates and between other teams. It was really the teammate drama that bothered her. Two of the players, the keeper Ernie and a chaser Sofia, absolutely could not show up for practice whenever the other was there, because they had recently broken up and it would be awkward. Then some beater started hitting on Sofia, which made Ernie jealous. They would have had a full on fight if James hadn't stepped in.

James. That puzzling, arrogant bloke. Sometimes he could be nice and charming, but mostly he just annoyed her to death. And the way he picked on Severus... well, she supposed she, a mudblood, wouldn't care about that. Sev could handle himself. It was then that she felt the betrayal bubble up to the surface again. Was that really what he saw her as?

Forcefully, she flipped another page in the book, receiving slight glances from those around her. Scowling quietly to herself, she rested her head in one hand and flipped a few more pages in the book until hers matched up with Remus's, the boy sitting to her right. Then she flipped it back once, knowing Remus was a quick reader and she probably wouldn't be at the same point as him, if she had, in fact, been paying attention. Which she hadn't been.

Her emerald eyes skimmed the body of the text. Perhaps she should have at least been trying to pay attention. No matter, she'd just go back over the material over the weekend, and-

Lily flinched backwards as the wire-haired boy a row in front of her yelped and fell onto the floor. Her first instinct was to get up and help him. But just as she was shifting to stand up, the classroom broke out in laughter, Sirius with them. The red-head sank back down and bit her lip while grinning, she supposed it was a little funny. Okay, it had been amusing. In all honest, that dog got what he had coming to him. Still, she couldn't find it in her to laugh. She simply gave a quick smile to the subject and returned her gaze down to her textbook.

Ginny Weasley was a bit surprised at the lack of people in Diagon Alley. Mind you, there where plenty of people. But she was used to the Hogwarts crowd, and having to push and trip over people to get where you want to go. Maybe she could use a little pushing and shoving. It might wake her up. It was odd, but her emotions were kind of... frozen. Like, Harry had been her crush and later boyfriend from when she first had seen him, before then, even. So wouldn't she be upset now that they were...? It as weird, but she had just kinda moved past it.

Shaking her head, she looked around. Spotting a familiar face, the red-head smiled a little and decided to go talk to him. "Hey Neville," she said. "I haven't seen you in a while."

Ginny smiled grimly, shaking her head. "No, I hardly ever see Ron anymore." Alone, she added silently. He was always with Hermione, off touring the muggle world or whatever else they did together in their spare time. Surprisingly enough, that left Percy as her new favorite brother. George was... well, he was different now. Beyond the absence of his ear, that is. Perhaps favorite wasn't the right word... but Perce had definitely stepped up to become the most entertaining sibling living within a reasonable distance from the house. "As for Harry... well..." she toyed with the idea of telling Neville about it. Eh. It would come up if it came up. "Thank you," she nodded as she sat down in the opposite seat. "What're reading?"

Ginny wouldn't be surprised if Neville became the Herbology professor one day. He was awfully interested in plants. "Well, good for you then!" she said with an encouraging smile as she untangled a bit of ginger hair between her fingers. Thank Merlin for hair ties, without which she would always look this cluttered.

She looked up at the second sentence with a subtle grin at his complement. "Thanks, although you did pretty good as well," she paused, bright brown eyes searching for a place to stop as she thought for a moment. "Yes, I've concerned becoming an Auror," she admitted. "I just don't think my grades meet the level the Ministry's looking for though," she said. "I might do better at quidditch. I've always dreamed about playing for the Harpies."
