A short, squat, and balding man struggles to hang his shingle over the front entrance to advertise his store is now open for business. Once in place he steps back to look at it. The shingle (a wooden sign with a picture on it for the illiterate) displays a birdcage with a bird of paradise sitting inside. Next to the door is a hand painted sign that reads:
"Now I just sit back and wait for the customers to come pouring in," he said to himself as he walked inside. |

The man had been sitting down for more than an hour when the bell above the door jingled as a short man stepped in. "Good day," he said, scanning the shop with his gaze, taking everything in. "Nice place you've got here. New, isn't it?" |

"Ah, a customer! Welcome my good man." Merfy smiles invitingly at his first customer. "Come, come look around we have many animals for sale. And, the ones we don't have we know how to acquire. Now is there anything in particular that you fancy or we could show you?" |

"Yes, there is actually... I came here for something very specific. Don't worry, it's not a dragon. Though it may be almost as rare... It is a Golden Raven I am after. I'm sure you know all about them, you being a specialist and all." |

Merfy stares at the man for a second in thought, "I never claimed to be that," he says with an affable smile. "We have white ravens, black ravens, even golden eagles, but no golden ravens are currently in my inventory. But that does not mean it cannot be acquired -- for the right price. With a bit of information from you I will have my agents dispatched and procure that which you desire." |

"Cost is not an issue. Don't get too excited however - the chance that you find one is small. But if you do, you will be a rich man. A Lancaster always pays his debts. Now, for the raven. It is an animal of myth, though I have reason to believe it exists. It is said to be native to the Golden Fields in Essos. It is also said to be more intelligent than most human beings. Than all human beings. It remembers everything - not only the past, but also the future. I'm sure you can understand why I would be interested in acquiring such an animal, can you not?" |

"I will dispatch my agents post-haste, good ser. As for payment, in regards to such a magnificent creature surely you would agree that it is priceless. As such I would be unable to set a proper price. Instead I will simply request a marker of yours. (A non-monetary debt owed to someone, a boon that may be collected at a later time.) You may get lucky and I may never call it in...or I might fancy a knightly title, who knows. A Lannister marker, now that too would be quite priceless. Do we have a deal?" |

The Dwarf looked thoughtful for a moment, and then spoke again. "Agreed. You get me a Golden Raven, in perfect condition, and you have yourself a marker. And also, don't spread this around. Only inform who you absolutely must. And make sure that you only use your most trusted agents. Understood?" |

"To position yourself so that fortune favors you when catching an elusive beast it is prudent to cast a wide net. If you shrink the net to the size used for common butterflies, the futility of the task increases greatly. But I do understand your concern about those knowing too much. I presumed that you wouldn't have been willing to grant an open-ended marker for something that soused night's watchman could catch." "Just to put your mind at ease, for this acquisition I will most likely discuss the matter with four, maybe five, of my associates. They will deal with their own contacts and resources in an attempt to locate and acquire said animal. They are knowledgeable in the workings of the various black markets, and rest assured that one who cannot bide their tongue does not last long in their dealings. They will have no knowledge of you and you will have no knowledge of them, just like I don't know their agents and sources. Limited contact leads to limited exposure. What they do outside of Westeros is their business. It is a business of ends, not the means to them." Give me a few days and I should have word to you. Edited by katherine, Jun 7 2014, 02:00 AM.

"Okay, we have ourselves a deal then. I'm looking forward to hearing from you. Good day." |
