Lancelin Day Out

A small report for an average day out on friday. Headed to Lancelin to have a bash at the Key Biscayne oil rig wreck off the coast. 20km travel from lancelin, instead of a 50km punt from two rocks.
Early start to the day, left home at 530 and in the water at 7ish, water was calm in the bay, wind was moderate. No white caps to be seen in the disatnce apart from reef.
But geez, got around the other side of the island and it felt like the wind gods woke up also. All of a sudden the wind picked up to 30-40km easterly, white caps, spray, which made for a slow motor of about 10knts to the rig.
Got to the wreck and the last time i was there we were getting busted of by sambos and sharks. This time, with fish on the sounder, nothing, wind was still strong so drifting was out of the Q.
Anchoring up, berleying, we got heaps of little pickers. Had 1 big run but got bricked in 10sec. That was all. Stayed there for an hour or two until the wind died. Or when i noticed we started to drift off the wreck?
Thinking the reef anchor had pulled its spot, i pulled it in with no resistance at all from 40m, to find it not there. The bloody shackle had given way. 😁
Anyway, as the wind had died down and sand anchor would be too risky for that environment, started to drift around the place and picked up some blackarse and a couple of just size baldies.
So with two baldies and a blackarse in the esky we motored off for some trawling into shallower water along the reef ridge and cray pots for some tuna or makkies....... No success but came across a huge pod of about 100 dolphins.
I thought they were chasing fish so went close to them still trawling for other paleagics, but they were more interested in playing, spinning, flipping and jumping all over the place. Some even came and bow rided for a couple of minutes. No luck on any fish.
Got to the cray pot reef edge area and trawled back slowly to lano. No luck with the makkies or tuna. So anyway, tried in 20m of water for that last demersal to fit the esky and caught zero.
Motored back to lano and as the weather finally turned perfect as the weather report had said it should at 0700, this time it was 1400. So anchored up and berleyed around for some whiting, herring. Again for nothing except inquisitive rays going for the berley and fish bits floating around.
So mediocre sucess on an average day, tried every technique with lures, plastics, bait. For nothing much except the photos. Minus one baldy as it went home with my mate.
The moon may have had something to do with it, it was still up and bright, abought quater full all day. Dont know if that has anything to do with it, im putting it down to that, but for all the effort i had put in and couldnt even raise a sambo off the wreck or when around lano island not even raising a trusty herring. It must have not been my day.
Any way, hopefully the weather plays nice for next weekend and get a chance to do better and get up to cervantes.
S**t it was supposed to be a short story!

a "bad" day on the water still has its moments. that massive pod would have been worth the trip even without the feed.

oil rig wreck????
found it :P

Good read courtz.
I hate it when that happens, where weather doesn't shut off when It should.

I've still got my fingers crossed for next weekend

Top read Courtz.
Frustrating when the fish won't play.
Still a quality feed if not quantity.
