I finally was able to get out locally last night with the old boy.

Ive heard of a few mackies caught around my way recently so the plan was to head out to the local reef line and set up a balloon while we scored our live bait so we could anchor up at our spot for the night.

As we hit the ramp the wind was blowing about 15kn straight easterly. there was about a 1/2 meter washing machine chop so we decided to blast out to coventry to set up the balloon rather than a closer in reef. Unfortunately we got out there to find the place covered in cray pots so a balloon was just a waste of time. We sounded around for a bit and anchored up on the east side of the reef to try coax something into our live tank. But the place was dead. Dad picked up a 30 cm pinky off his light rod which was good fun but other than that it was very quiet.
We didnt want to loose the light so we came back in to a reef where i know the hezza's are thick and we anchored up for an hour and got about a dozen or so in the tank for later.

We moved on to the super secret artificial reef that everyone knows about in Warnbro to hopefully get a shark or 2 or a mully. Again the sounder was very quiet so we just anchored around the middle and away we went. The balloon went out with a 30cm ish slimey from our last trip out. There were yakkas, tailor and pike on tap so there was plenty of bait in the tank at all times. We sat for a few hours and had nothing much on the bigger rods but the little stuff was fun. throw in a few 40 cm+ tailor every now and then and its entertaining on 4lb line and a sabiki.

I got a very short run at one point and the tailor came back crushed so i know what hit it, but i dont know why it didnt hook up. oh well.

We were getting snagged a few times and couldnt work out why when our baits were way off the bottom. We were using weights, which i dont usually do, because the boat was swinging in pretty much a 180 degree arc. I hooked up to the snag at one point and it came up slowly so i kept it up. i got some rope and cursed some bastard putting a cray pot on that spot. It was heavy as hell but i got it up and found that some CNT had roped and engine block to about 12 metres of crappy old floating rope. Initially i thought someone was just being a w@nker and using it as an anchor point and had cut it off instead of pulling it up.
But as the night got on we kept getting fouled on rope that was way off the bottom and even at one point i got snagged about 5m under the boat. Really sh!ts me off that people would be such d!cks and do things just to ruin someone elses fishing. It makes no damn sense. It cant be eco twats or they would have just removed the damn reefs.
So if you are heading out to that spot that is super secred just be aware that there is floating rope anchored to the bottom that can cause a pain in the ass.

anywho i finally got a run and pulled in a shark about 1m. he got knighted by my mallet a few times before being bled and iced.

The balloon finally went off towards 1am and i got to play with my new fin nor 8500. The angry short runs said shark straight away and it had good weight. The beasty gave a good accounting for itself but after a bit the 1.5m reef/blacktip/idunno shark came up pretty beat. As it came up we saw it had my other line wrapped around the leader so we spent a couple of seconds trying to untangle it. stupid, stupid wookiee. as i had the leader wrapped lightly around my hand the sharky gave a stiff dive down and almost took my hand with it. if it wasnt for the swivel catching on my little finger the braid burn probably would have taken the finger off. i leadered the fish up and as i got it to the side the line at the hook pinged and the fish was away. At this point the rod that we had untangled bent over an the reel screamed. i picked it up and realised the shark was now on that line but i couldnt work out how as we had untangled it. I got it up slowly and saw that part of my braid had hitched once around the shaft of the hook and was being held by the tag end of my snell (no silly snells here thank you very much). I grabbed the sharks tail and it was all over. I roped it off to the side and bled it after a couple of gentle kisses with the sleepy hammer. then she was topped and tailed and onto the ice. My finger was a bit busted up and bleeding but i got off easy with just a cut from front to back which is a mm or so deep and no other concerns. it could have been a crapload worse.

we stuck it out for another hour or so but the constant crap with those sub surface ropes gave us the S**ts and we called it a night about 3am.

gee that was a long write up for not much!

cheers

anyone had a stinky shark before???
both sharks last night were bled, beheaded, gutted and tailed before putting it on ice. Standard practice for us.
and as per usual i left them on ice (ice in waterproof bag) in my sealed esky and filleted them when i got up in the late morning and straight in the fridge.
i noticed a funky smell last night as i took the head and guts off the bigger shark. I assumed it was guts. I got a whiff of it when i filleted it but thought it was a bit more stomach or something.
now ive gone to portion the fish when i got home tonight and again i got that smell. kinda like garlic. i looked closer at the fillets i noticed there were lighter, almost light brown, patches all over the place and they were the parts that stank. like the fish was off. but it hasnt been off ice or out of the fridge at all and it was swimming less than 24 hours ago.

i dont know the exact species of shark it was but it had black tips on the pectoral fins and the bottom of its tail. other than that it was a bronze colour.

So all those fillets have gone out as i wont give them to the family in case the fish was crook or diseased or something.

nothing about how i prepped the fish was different from normal and ive never had a drama so i dont think it was my error.
i tried to take a photo but it didnt come out at all.

any ideas? its definitely a first for me and ive not heard of it before. ive heard of worms in some fish but i found no evidence of that.
its a bloody shame. i really hate wasting fish.

It is a shame that the more people know about spots the more dramas you get. Hence why I'll never fish the D9 again.
At least you got to play and kept your finger (with your luck with injuries must be a win).
Got no info on the shark for you.

I got a simular sounding shark (black tips etc) down here last year and that too smelt overly strong when cleaning. Ended up giving it to the dog and she didnt mind it.
Didnt notice anything odd about the flesh but.

it hasnt been an easy summer for the whiting for us for some reason Rob. Nothing like last year at all.

anywho. i found out that the stinky flesh can sometimes happen when the shark is extremely stressed. kind of like releasing a toxin or something. The ammonia bleeds into the flesh causing it to smell and taste not so good which is a similar result to leaving the guts in for a couple of days and not bleeding them.
it doesnt happen very often but it can happen.

Yes mate, well known fact. That why I always play shark a bit of Barry White before severing their spine - it gets them nice and relaxed.
