First we headed out to the North Mole area in the tinny, set up and started fishing. it was quite slow to start with but after a while we started getting a few baitfish, and setting them out as livies. I got one run but it spat the hooks and we saw one hooked up on the mole itself but also it was lost after a brief fight. We gave it a few hours then decided to head out around the Stragglers/Mewstone area. We tried there for a bit but it was a bit dicey with the swell making breaking waves over the reefs, so we headed out slightly deeper agan. Not too far though. Straight away we had action. Big Snook (Pike) came on the bite as well as a couple of Dhue fish as well. Mitch got his first legal (50cm) Dhue fish and I got one just under at the same time. Both were released thinking we"ll get bigger. We had a bit more action with runs and lost hook ups then it went quiet.
We shifted again to another spot nearby and the same thing, action straight away but this time it was Pink Snapper Yahoo. We ended up boating five or six and losing a few more, only actually taking one each. At one stage we were both hooked up at the same time to real good fish. Well I got mine off the bottom and half way up and Mitch's fish was still going strong and his fish and line went across mine slicing my line and therefor losing my fish. Then his fish ended up snagging him in the reef and he lost that one also. The day went on with more hook ups. bite offs/sharks etc. What an awesome day. When we came back in through the Straggler's Reef Mewstones far out it had changed. White water and big waves exactly where we had started fishing earlier. We had to find another way through, which we did but you certainly have to be careful around there.

Well done Dan! Just shows that demersal species are still around and not too far out in one of the most hammered areas of the (WA Govt) West Coast Bioregion - guess the livies (and your awesome skill ;) ) made the difference ! B-) If you don't mind me asking, were you single hooking or double snelling those livies - have a hook and size preference (Js, Circles)?

I was using both standard js in a 6/0s, and circles in 8/0s and didn't make much difference. The 8/0s for the slightly bigger livies and using both hooks in the bait. Thinking about it son in-law was only using one hook of a snelled rig in his livies and I landed more fish. Not sure if it was hook placement or luck though. We still both lost a few fish for various reasons.

I went out on the spur of the moment Sun evening Monday morning. I went out in Cockburn Sound for an hour or two and caught a few livies, then headed out past Garden Island to try my luck. I scored this lovely pinkie which is the biggest this season. That was it for the quality fish, but plenty of stingrays and port jackson sharks to keep me from getting bored.
Mon 2nd June 2014 Caught aprox 2am.

Yep basically twice this long weekend Wookiee, just a spur of the moment for Sun night Monday morning. This one went 80cm straightening out the fins. Only half recovered from the previous session but still headed out. The weather was completely different to forecast once out past Garden Island but still went out. The swell was pretty big and a bit lumpy and it was a slow trip out. Also it was pitch black out there, couldn't see stuff all. Most times you can see something, but this time with the clouds and slight drizzle couldn't see anything. I actually had to use my hand held spotlight (Normally you can see without using it, just with night vision) to look for craypots etc. It was sort of spooky with the rain and mist but I liked it. I tried a couple of spots in around 20m of water Lefty and this is where I had success. I spotted more fish on the sounder but only got the one. I reckon there might have been a big shark around because I saw a bigger shape on the sounder, just one on its own showing up every half hour or so. It was aprox 10-12m under the boat each time. I had a live Herring out under a balloon but it went untouched. There was so many Rays around as well, so my poor shoulders are paying the price now still. As to the weather as I was coming home in the morning it looked to be calming right down, and I think would have been a pretty good day out for all the boaties just going out.
Talking about the weather, the funny thing it was flat calm, like a mirror close to the shore where i was getting my livies, but changed heaps as soon as between Carnac and Garden Island.

I absolutely love those times you can't see anything. Cant hear a sound except for the motor and it feels like you're the only person on the planet. Then when you're at anchor. its even better especially a glass off.
Very surreal.

I usually just leave the details with my wife. I have a detailed map of the area I fish at home and she knows my spots. I keep on messaging throughout the night, especially when I catch something. :) If I know I'm going a bit further out of phone reception I tell her pretty much exactly where I'll be and what depth of water I'll fish. Then I tell her exactly when/what time I should be back in phone range. I get phone reception right out to around about 40m of water and can usually at least text.

Well I decided on the spur of the moment to head out again tonight. Originally my daughter was coming over for dinner and I put out a nice fillet of fish for dinner. Then at the last moment she had to cancel so I said I'd cook it up tomorrow instead. So feeling a bit bored I thought I'd go out fishing instead. I packed all my gear, boat, bait, food, thermos, wet weather gear etc, etc and headed down to the ramp. When I got there it was blowing quite strongly from the South West/ South Easterly gusting back and forth. There was not another boat at the ramp. Anyway out I went dunking the nose even before getting to much past the jetty out the front. So it was a slow and wet ride out, not that I went too far. I found a likely spot and put the anchor down, putting out a berley slick and throwing three lines out. i waited about 15minutes or so and with the first bait in the water I got my first run and first fish after a spirited struggle. Yahoo to myself and started taking pics and texting on my phone. Next second off went one of my other lines. I missed that one. Anyway I waited a bit longer and got another run and another fish, yahoo time to go home. Too easy :)

I headed out early afternoon for another Marathon effort out on the wild blue yonder. It was Tues 24th June and near perfect boating weather with flat calm seas as far as one could see. I had intended starting in close around the Five Fathom bank area, but changed my mind and went straight out to the 40m depth area. First drop resulted in a good hook up with fast powerful runs and lunges. After ten minutes or so it bit through the 100lb wire trace and I cursed just slightly. I rigged up again and after a short wait off my line went again, not anywhere near as powerful but still a good fight. This was a perfect eating size shark so I dispatched it and put it on ice. After this it went quiet for a bit then the rubbish Port Jackson sharks, Fiddler rays and other crap fish kept me from being bored. Just before sunset I got another real good run and a good battle ensued, after about ten fifteen minutes I was winning again but it was still taking fast runs straight down to the bottom then back to the surface. As it came to the surface I could see another good size shark 1.2m-1.4m in length hooked in the corner of the jaw with a 8/0 circle hook. I thought I had this one, but I was using a snelled two hook rig and one hook was dangling free. As it came to the surface the free hook got caught on the anchor rope and the shark went spastic thrashing around like crazy. It bent the 8/0 circle hook that was in its mouth straight and got off. It went quiet again so I decided to move out further again, out between 43-46m depth this time. I found a nice looking spot and put the anchor down. It was dark now and I started feeling the cold a bit but it didn't deter me. After a while I got a small run with a few head shakes and up came a nice Dhu of just over legal size, yahoo in the icebox it went. I could feel lots of small bites so thought there might be some King George Whiting around. I changed down to my flick rod and gave it a go, straight away I was on with lots of head shakes etc. A Pink Snapper but undersized just so back it went. This was the theme for the rest of the night with snapper from aprox 40cm to 52cm constantly on the bite. I ended up keeping one sized but having a ball. Inbetween the other rubbish fish were still biting to with a few more port jackson sharks etc. Eventually I got another strong bite with heaps of thumping, lunges etc, tangling up both lines and then up came a huge Crayfish, surprising me no end. What a beauty and early morning by now so home time. Just to put a dampener on things my anchor was stuck again and to make a long story short I bent this one right out of shape making it unusable but I didn't care. What an exciting night I'd had. The crayfish was released of course after the pic was taken.

I was stuck in one spot for quite a while because of the anchor being stuck, but moved about four times I think. Its a long way to pull up an anchor that's for sure. Second Anchor stuffed in a couple of weeks bugger.Lots of undersized pinkies around and a few Dhu's as well. It's the further-est I've been out so far, hitting 46m at one stage. It was a long slow trip back in as the winds were offshore and increased a bit in the morning. I hate Easterlies, it was so different coming home. On the way out I could go flat out if I chose, mostly cruised out at three quarter throttle. On the way home I was battling to do 10-12kms because of the chop. It was even rough in the Sound over Garden Island side on the way back. I spoke to another fisherman out there overnight, and they had a couple of better Dhu's from the same area.
Considering how far out I went I don't think its that much better fishing than when in closer. It was a good experience but next trip will be a lot closer in again. I just had to give it a go when it was that calm to start with.

Headed out into Cockburn Sound last night to try my luck. I tried a few different locations without much luck though I had two good runs at one spot but missed them both. Plenty of baitfish to start but even they went quiet after a while. So I decided I'd head out past Garden Island. Once out through the channel there was a fair swell still pumping but out I went. I found a spot after a while of looking around, one where I hadn't been before and decided to give it a go. First drop and I got a good run and missed it, then another and missed that to. Then quiet for a while then thump, thump and a short run and more thumping and up comes a Dhu at around 52cm so thought that will do., thank you very much. After that one of the best hot bite sessions I've had for a while. Snapper 45cm to high 60s kept on biting on and off as well as big skippy 35cm to a bit over 40cms. Even some samson fish showed up in the slick following hooked skippy but not taking anything. When I pulled in the pinkie that I kept it was followed by another right to the surface, if I'd been a little quicker I could have just about netted it but I was stunned and didn't react quick, Got an occie as well so got some fresh bait. Plenty of herring as well so no chance to be bored on this trip. So I had a ball going down to my flick rod for the skippy and small snapper. Got busted off a few times in the reef to. Got the anchor stuck again but luckily came off still in working order after about 15mins of trying.
so another great session in the tinny, but a rough slow ride back in with a south west swell and easterly winds.

Yep I hardly ever buy bait these days, just the occasional block of mulies for catching bait or for berley. Yeah Numbskull the night went very quick and even into the morning. Lately I've been going home at day break but this time the fish kept biting a lot longer. It was hard to go home.

I decided I needed another fix so headed out on Wednesday evening for an all nighter. It was still light when I left and I decided to head out around the five fathom bank area. There was a bit of a swell 2.5m-4m predicted and it was every bit correct. As I got to the gap between the islands Garden and Carnac you could see white water everywhere, and big waves crashing all round. I kept exactly to the channel markers and got past the worst of it. There was some white water further out to and even around the five fathom bank at some spots. I cautiously continued and started checking the sounder for sign of fish. After quite a while and it was already just getting dark I spotted fish on the sounder. This will do another spot but close to a previous location I'd been to. I started a berley trail and could see plenty of fish on the sounder. It was a relatively slow start but I eventually got a run and a nice snapper a bit under 60cm. I decided to let this one go as it was early and thought there would be a few more and maybe bigger. I was right there was more but not a lot bigger. I landed five that were over legal size and quite a few more that were smaller, only keeping two. It was another good nights fishing, a bit slower than I thought it would be considering the amount of fish showing on the sounder but I definitely couldn't complain. The fish kept on biting sporadically throughout the night and into the morning, with a few bigger bust offs as well. In the morning I landed two samson fish as well just for something different. The bigger fish of around 80cm or so put up a good fight on my 15lb flicky nearly spooling me a few times before I finally subdued it. Also there were skippy from 30cm to over 40cm again like blowies and tons of herring around as well. I used a couple of each for bait but released the rest. i also landed another good size occie again which I kept for bait next time. The trip back in was slow again at 8-10km and even that got me airborne a few times but another worthwhile trip. So that's it till next adventure.
I need a new card reader to put my camera pics up so pics will come a little bit later.

Here's a couple of pics of my fish I caught. I can't believe how flat it looks in these pics that I took, the swell was huge. I wish i'd taken some pics as I was going out or in through Garden Island and Carnac Island. At least there you would've seen a lot of the white water I was talking about. Even in Cockburn sound some waves were breaking.

I decided even though suffering with man flu I needed a fishing fix. So Thursday evening 7th Aug I headed out for another tinny adventure on the wild blue sea. The plan was for another all nighter and weather reports were favorable wind wise but not rain wise but I could handle a little rain. When I left the ramp it was fairly smooth looking but the waves were coming quite close together so it was easy to get airbourne if not careful. I still made good speed and soon left Cockburn Sound behind me. I settled at a spot not too far out to start with. Well the rain turned up soon after starting fishing and didn't stop for nearly two hours straight. I didn't mind that too much but the wind increased as well and I was rocking around like crazy for quite a while. I managed to fish with Skippy and Herring on tap again but the bigger fish were slow getting started. After a few hours there was a burst of activity with a big Wobbygong brought to the boat, and various Port Jacksons and Rays plus a couple of bust offs, then it went quiet again. It was well and truly dark by now and the rain and squalls stopped and it calmed right down. So I headed out a lot further and found another spot. The echo sounder showed up a few fish and I'd done well in this area before so this is pretty much where I stayed though I moved a few hundred metres a couple of times. It was a fairly slow night but Samson fish showed up to give me a good work out. I think it was five boated or released at the side and many more that couldn't be stopped and made the reefs. In between there was many missed runs and bite offs as well so think there were a few bigger bities around. I had live surface baits out but they remained untouched all night again.
I got a nice run on the 15lb flick rod and could feel a bit of weight and a bit of thumping, and thought maybe a nice Dhuie. So can you imagine when a 7-8 feet long Tiger Shark came right up to the boat, it bumped the boat then went for a screaming run breaking me off.

After this the night wore on into day and all I managed was one undersize Dhu and a few more samson runs/hook ups. Then there was another burst of activity again and I starte getting a few reef fish like Blackarse (Breaksea) cods and Harlequin fish plus wrasse etc but that was it for quality fish. It was a bit hectic with a bite a cast for a bit and I wasn't paying attention to the weather and when I looked up mainland had disappeared behind a big band of fog so I decided to headed in, I had to subdue one last samson fish as it took my line as I was about to pack up. The fog surrounded me and couldn't see anything at all so it was an interesting experience that's for sure. I was glad I had Gps and a compass.
So not one snapper sighted this trip but still a quality feed and another great adventure.
Till next time SnappaDan
