First we headed out to the North Mole area in the tinny, set up and started fishing. it was quite slow to start with but after a while we started getting a few baitfish, and setting them out as livies. I got one run but it spat the hooks and we saw one hooked up on the mole itself but also it was lost after a brief fight. We gave it a few hours then decided to head out around the Stragglers/Mewstone area. We tried there for a bit but it was a bit dicey with the swell making breaking waves over the reefs, so we headed out slightly deeper agan. Not too far though. Straight away we had action. Big Snook (Pike) came on the bite as well as a couple of Dhue fish as well. Mitch got his first legal (50cm) Dhue fish and I got one just under at the same time. Both were released thinking we"ll get bigger. We had a bit more action with runs and lost hook ups then it went quiet. We shifted again to another spot nearby and the same thing, action straight away but this time it was Pink Snapper Yahoo. We ended up boating five or six and losing a few more, only actually taking one each. At one stage we were both hooked up at the same time to real good fish. Well I got mine off the bottom and half way up and Mitch's fish was still going strong and his fish and line went across mine slicing my line and therefor losing my fish. Then his fish ended up snagging him in the reef and he lost that one also. The day went on with more hook ups. bite offs/sharks etc. What an awesome day. When we came back in through the Straggler's Reef Mewstones far out it had changed. White water and big waves exactly where we had started fishing earlier. We had to find another way through, which we did but you certainly have to be careful around there. 3 mins · Like |

Yeah I was getting ready with the landing net cause I thought it was a decent fish. It just came up for a look I reckon and bumped the boat quite hard before screaming off. No hope of staying connected once it went like that. I decided even though suffering with man flu I needed a fishing fix. So Thursday evening 7th Aug I headed out for another tinny adventure on the wild blue sea. The plan was for another all nighter and weather reports were favorable wind wise but not rain wise but I could handle a little rain. When I left the ramp it was fairly smooth looking but the waves were coming quite close together so it was easy to get airbourne if not careful. I still made good speed and soon left Cockburn Sound behind me. I settled at a spot not too far out to start with. Well the rain turned up soon after starting fishing and didn't stop for nearly two hours straight. I didn't mind that too much but the wind increased as well and I was rocking around like crazy for quite a while. I managed to fish with Skippy and Herring on tap again but the bigger fish were slow getting started. After a few hours there was a burst of activity with a big Wobbygong brought to the boat, and various Port Jacksons and Rays plus a couple of bust offs, then it went quiet again. It was well and truly dark by now and the rain and squalls stopped and it calmed right down. So I headed out a lot further and found another spot. The echo sounder showed up a few fish and I'd done well in this area before so this is pretty much where I stayed though I moved a few hundred metres a couple of times. It was a fairly slow night but Samson fish showed up to give me a good work out. I think it was five boated or released at the side and many more that couldn't be stopped and made the reefs. In between there was many missed runs and bite offs as well so think there were a few bigger bities around. I had live surface baits out but they remained untouched all night again. I got a nice run on the 15lb flick rod and could feel a bit of weight and a bit of thumping, and thought maybe a nice Dhuie. So can you imagine when a 7-8 feet long Tiger Shark came right up to the boat, it bumped the boat then went for a screaming run breaking me off. After this the night wore on into day and all I managed was one undersize Dhu and a few more samson runs/hook ups. Then there was another burst of activity again and I starte getting a few reef fish like Blackarse (Breaksea) cods and Harlequin fish plus wrasse etc but that was it for quality fish. It was a bit hectic with a bite a cast for a bit and I wasn't paying attention to the weather and when I looked up mainland had disappeared behind a big band of fog so I decided to headed in, I had to subdue one last samson fish as it took my line as I was about to pack up. The fog surrounded me and couldn't see anything at all so it was an interesting experience that's for sure. I was glad I had Gps and a compass. So not one snapper sighted this trip but still a quality feed and another great adventure. Till next time SnappaDan Edited by SnappaDan, Aug 8 2014, 07:00 PM.

No that one in the pic on the floor is alive and I released it seconds after the pic. I have eaten them in the past and some have been okay and some not. I don't bother these days as usually have a choice of better quality. They definitely are an awesome fighter sports fish though. I really got a work out this trip. I also saw a whale fairly close up on the way out, it surfaced then dived just in front of me. Also when fishing I heard a noise not too far away in the dark. I grabbed the spotlight and shone it in the general direction and something was startled and dived with a real big splash of its tail. Not 100% sure if it was a whale or something else. |

Headed out last night into Cockburn Sound for a fish. First off was around the D9 area trying for a Snapper, its not where I usually fish but thought I'd give it a go for a change. Lots of other boats had the same idea and boats got closer and closer, I could have cast into other boats if I tried. Some turned up with stereo's cranking, noisily putting anchors down etc, some with no lights on etc. I see why I usually don't fish anywhere near there and this was on a week night, imagine the weekend. Anyway I did a good long session for not much quality fish at all, just Rays, Port Jackson's, Fiddlers etc. Herring were prolific though and could have caught as many as wanted, so got a few for livies and future baits. The amount of Rays stuffed my shoulder again so will need a break for a bit again. Early morning with no Pinkies to show for my efforts I was about to go home when I changed my mind and thought I'd give it one last shot for a Gummy Shark and try and salvage something from the trip. I headed across to one of the areas I'd caught them before and gave it a go. I only had to wait about twenty minutes or so and scored this one just under a metre in length. It was caught on my flick rod with 15lb line so was quite good fun. After this I hooked another Ray so decided to call it quits and go home. So the Gummy saved the night/day, a couple of good feeds from that. Edited by SnappaDan, Aug 28 2014, 09:05 PM.

Yeah they seem to like the mud bottom in the sound.Hey lefty a couple of the Rays were on the flicky as well. Had to pull up anchor and wind in two other lines and chase them before nearly being spooled. One bigger one was taking drag on the 20000 Stella like it was nothing. Fark that hurt me. |

I went out yesterday in Cockburn Sound again earlier than I usually do. Still daylight for a change deciding to try for Gummy Sharks again. I found a spot and settled in.It didn't take too long and I had a decent one on board caught on my flick rod again, great fun. All up landed four other smaller ones that were released and lost one bigger one around the anchor rope. also four Eagle Rays plus about another four Fiddler Rays. Most were hooked and brought to the boat on the flicky, only a couple on the bigger gear. I came home earlier than usual as my relatively new battery died. Its less than 3-4 months old. I replaced my old one at aproximately 2.5 years old nothing wrong with it so there would be no chance of being caught out. Luckily I still have pull start.

I decided to head out on Thursday afternoon 11th Sept 2014. and the plan was originally to head out a fair way as I hadn't been able to get a pinkie in close just recently. I also had been out two days prior trying in the sound for pinkies and did 12 hours for zero, not even a run. So heading out on Thus I changed plans slightly at the last minute and thought I'd try for a Gummy Shark instead. I headed across to one of my known Gummy areas and set up. I had to wait a couple of hours and was nearly ready for a move when i got the first run and shortly after a nice 116 Gummy came on board. Whoohoo my plan to stay and try for them worked. A short while later another slightly bigger was also caught and then another also but released the third one. They were still on the bite but decided to shift and try for a pinkie. I headed over to join some other boats in a popular snapper haunt. After another couple of hours without a sniff i decided to head out of the Sound. It was really calm but a big swell was about, flat water but just rising and falling very high. I was a bit deceived by what it looked and felt like. As I went over the FFB I spotted a big school of fish and stopped, switched off motor and phoned my son to let him know where I was. Next second I heard what I thought was a whale blowing but looked up to see the big swell had turned to white breaking water heading my way. I started motor and faced up to it and went through okay. I decided to move off the FFB and go deeper as the swell doesn't break as easy or often deeper. I found a spot after a decent move and set up again. It was very quiet and I moved once more slightly further. Again it was very quiet but got a few touches/bites. One bite off a few more missed short runs. Then I pulled up a crayfish (Released ) as well. Then a bit later nearly got a second Cray but it let go just as I was scooping for it. A bit later again I got a nice bite and short run and up came a first for my tinny. A nice Red Snapper...Whoohoo I was happy. A bit later again I got a big run and this one took quite a while to get close to the boat, then tangled my other line and went for another big run. i had to cut the other line losing 40 or more metres of line. Eventually after 8-9 times at the side I had it by the tail, even then it took another minute or two to haul in. Once in it tried to eat me snapping and jumping around. I eventually grabbed it and set up a couple of quick pics before releasing it back overboard.A nice Long Nose Grey Shark. After this not much else, but inbetween there was a Leopard Shark, Port Jackson, and undersize Dhu. Then i waited till light to head back over the FFB and even though it got slightly rougher no waves were breaking this time, work that out. Edited by SnappaDan, Sep 13 2014, 10:56 AM.

Went out again late on Tues to try my luck. Tried in the Sound for Gummies but my spot let me down, tried the popular area for Pinks but that let me down. So headed out of the Sound and fished overnight into morning. Ended up with 3x undersized Pinkies 1x small Shark and 1x Samson landed and about five or six lost due to not stopping them make the reef. Man they fight hard nearly ripping me over the side, not good for my shoulders aye. Came home went to sleep then headed out wed night, thurs again. Also blanked. Tried about six different spots in the Sound. Just a few Rays Banjo's etc and a couple of Shark bust offs. Also snapped my favourite flick rod on a big screaming run. This is the one I've been using to catch my GummySharks recently. Buggggger. On both trips I see pic of Pinks that others have caught on the same nights and not far from me. ARRGH BUgggerrr Bugggerrr. Next time aye. Edited by SnappaDan, Sep 27 2014, 10:52 AM.

Bugger about your rod Dan. Only a matter of time until the worm turns and you find the fish again. The fish are definitely patchy, and im finding them not always in the mood. That sambo is a good size, I'll have to try for a few myself in the coming months. |

I've been out about three times just before the ban, a couple of all nighter's and an all day trip on the Tuesday before the ban. One of the trips was a bit of a fizzer with not much of size caught, but got a undersized Dhu on a soft Plastic. Had a couple of bite offs and missed hook ups. Also the usual Rays and Port Jackson's. Another all nighter resulted in a 56.5cm Dhu and 67.5cm Flathead, and yes I kept it to eat, yummm. Also missed another flathead nearly identical size at boatside as it spat the hooks. Got into some Sambo's again on two occasions averaging 13-14kgs again. On the Tuesday I headed out with another boat to West End of Rottnest for a day session. It was fairly slow going but managed a size Dhu just under 60cm a nice Blackarse Cod. Had to put back a size Snapper and Harlequin as already had limit. Landed another 12-14kg Sambo and hooked a couple more that made the reef. Then on the way home stopped in Cockburn Sound and got a Gummy Shark as well to finish the day/evening off.

Decided I'd head out for my first fish since the demersal ban. My plan was to target a Gummy Shark or two with a leisurely 7.30am start. I headed out from the ramp no more than 15-20min boat ride and dropped anchor. By 10.20am I had lost two Gummies and a bite off by a different toothie critter. Then I had two runs on different rods one after the other and landed a nice Longnose Grey Shark and a Gummy Shark as well. I let the Gummy go trying for a bigger one, Well I didn't get bigger but boated Three total Two lost at boatside, one other Shark not identified getting off just a bit deeper down but could see it was a shark. A few missed runs not hooking at all just dropping it after a few seconds. Two Eagle Rays as well just to tire me a bit more, so another good trip and extremely short compared to my normal adventures, but a good one anyway. Probably only used 2-3 litres of fuel. |

Well I finally got a chance to fish in Travis's home patch on the weekend. I was based in the Porongurups on a holiday with my wife but brought the tinny as well so I could fish for one day. The Porongurups where I was staying is about 20kms plus inland from Mt Barker and at least 80-90kms from Travis place. Anyway the plan was to meet at his at around 3am. So I decided to get up around 1am to get ready after only 2-3hrs sleep. To make things worse I had got the flu before I left for my holiday so that was a bit annoying and draining but I was still going out no matter what. When i left the chalet at around 2am I nearly hit my first roo within 500m from the driveway of the chalet so it was a slower trip than I expected, then my spotties stopped working as well to make it even more interesting. Anyway I made it to Trav's around 3.20am or so and we soon got on our way. On the way we came across one of the other boats going with us so it was good timing. When we got to Hartman’s it was a beach launch in the dark just getting light slightly. I got at least 20-30litres of water over the stern just to start with and make things interesting. Then being shallow and trying to get going probably sucked a bit of sand into the motor, but finally we were on our way. Making our way between the shore and a small island and heading out. I didn't see all the reefs on the way out but glad Trav new where he was going. Anyway we headed off into some interesting seas, 4m swell was nothing I kid you not but out we raced anyway. I think everyone wanted to show how good their boats handled in the rough stuff but it was just a bit quick for my boat but I didn't want to complain, so I got banged around a bit more than I would have preferred but still didn't say anything. I don't mind the rough stuff but would have gone just a bit slower on my own. I think cause my boat is lighter it bounces over the top a bit more and doesn't cut through the waves as easy as some others. Strange aye considering it is really just an Estuary boat/tinny Anyway we finally arrive at our location and it took a bit to set up anchor and get it to hold. The big swell kept the anchor from holding for long so did a bit of drifting with the anchor out. The others just drifted. It didn’t take too long to start getting some decent bites and eventually a nice Queenie (Blue Morwong) came on board. It took a while for the next fish to come on board but eventually a very nice Harlequin my biggest to date was landed. Yehar this was going okay, I didn’t try too much for small fish but did get a few Wrasse and Parrot fish every now and then. Some of the Parrot fish were well over a kilo but all went back. A bit later I got a ripper of a run and an awesome fight and up comes a Yellowtail Kingfish, hell yeah the day was getting better and better. A few more Wrasse and Parrot fish and a couple of the wrasse as live baits, then another big run with lots of thumping and carrying on and up comes a Samson fish. Good fun but my shoulders are really starting to feel it by now, plus pulling anchor in over 40m of water quite a few times. Next bite wasn’t a big run but extremely powerful and lots of thumping not gaining much line easily, also going around the anchor rope just to make it even harder. Eventually I started winning and up comes a nice Groper. Far out does it get any better? Anyway to shorten the story it did. Another Samson, another Yellowtail Kingfish plus sighted heaps more under the boat and could’ve got heaps more if I tried lures or jigs I reckon. A good size Blackarse Cod as wel,l to round it all off. Then back to the beach to try and get boats back onto trailers. I don’t know how Trav does it on his own so often but okay with a couple of helpers. Anyway had an awesome trip and will do it again sometime. Some of the aches and pains (Sucks getting older) are just easing but all worth it.Looking forward to next time. SnappaDan Edited by SnappaDan, Nov 18 2014, 09:23 AM.

Yeah on bait but reckon I would've got heaps more on jigs if I tried, as they continually followed hooked fish up to the boat. Sometimes I could see ten or more under the boat. I didn't really want too many more as my shoulders were giving me a bit of trouble. Good fun for the first couple though but throw in a few Sambo's as well and I'd had enough.Lol. |

I use both Unhurry, my favourite is Jarvis Walker Suicide 100 pack 6/0 Red hook. Chemically sharpened. Cheap and strong. I usually use these in areas I lose a bit of gear, also when I'm holding the rod or slightly smaller baits like Mulies, squid, Yellowtail etc. For bigger and set baits I use 8/0 Owner Circle hooks. |

No real idea on Jigs Barry as mostly a baito. Snelled hooks and running or no sinker catches everything. Jigging is too much like hard work with my stuffed shoulders. I've got a couple of octo jigs and a few soft plasics but only use occasionally. Just got a pic resizer for phone so testing with this kill pic.

If I can I do, it depends on the current. That's why I anchor to use as little weight as possible. Quite often just a bean sinker that others would use in the river. |

Is there a bag limit on pre historic man eaters? Why throw them back snappa? You seem to like some mercury with your seafood? Do those bad boys pull some string or what? Do you berl up? What hooks? Wire? |

You are allowed 3 Pelagics and sharks come under that as far as I understand. I usually stick to two though as can get more next time. Yep they pull a bit of string, had the big one boatside five times before finally landing it. Each time it would power off again, good fun. Yep I berley up, use at least a block of mulies crushed up and left over fish scraps. As to rigs I've explained it all before, I only use snelled rigs 6/0-8/0 with or without wire depending on the day. Running or small as can get away with sinker. Yesterday I didn't use wire but changed rig after every shark. Yesterday I used a running sinker as there was some current running. |

) as well.
