I got a last min call today at about midday from a mate who invited me along to his secret stones spot to chase pinkies. It was a scramble to get there with some creeping along ledges to get to where he wanted to fish. it was a great ledge with plenty of fishing room and no one around. I guess its good to travel away a little ways sometimes to get the place to yourself. We hit the ledge and the water was damn fishy. swell was up to the ledge and foaming over a bit on occasion. nothing too dramatic but i did get a total drenching at one point as the swell hit the ledge just right and came down straight on my neck. i laughed so damn hard. Lucky i was wearing my thermals. Remember your point of safety people! ![]() second cast in and a short wait later i got my first hookup with a solid fish, good runs and angry head shakes. it played nice and went out from the reef and came up slowly but pretty easily. i got it to the ledge which had a slightly lower level (bout 1.5 feet down) where the highest swell would wash up, perfect for landing. Well i showed just how much rock fishing i do and with professional ease i missed the first 4 or 5 attempts with my 24kg low stretch getting rougher and rougher as it dragged along the rocks. Next one was the charm and up she came and sat pretty on the lower ledge and at that perfect moment my main line snapped away from the swivel. While i mimicked the gaping fish my mate was twinkle toes and got straight down there and stood between the fish and the edge and threw the fish up to my feet. perfect, professional job wookiee..... cough did i mention gaffs were not permitted? a little extra tension for giggles. into the little holding pool she went and i was off to get a new sinker and a new bait. My buddy was happy they were around and eagerly waiting for his fish. A new bait and a couple of casts later the rod loaded up in my hands again and i was into fish number 2. this one played dirty and went straight towards the reef. The line was dragging along the rocks and i thought it was a bust off for sure. But thankfully up it came at last and a nice specimen came up to the surface. No dodgy ledge work here as i took a chance on the rubbed line and i just hoiked it up to my feet. #2 in the pool.... I switched to some placcies to hope for a bonus photo but it wasnt to be. I gave it half an hour of flinging but the wind was not playing nicely at all and I couldn't get the distance to get a good working area for the placcie. My mate was still without a fish and wanted to get our last 2 fish so i switched back to bait but after a couple of hours more we didn't see another fish. We did see the face of a few more waves, and some solid rain squalls. Great storm fishing fun. It was a great afternoon. We were thoroughly soaked and in high spirits as we scrambled back over the rocks and along the muddy path back to the cars. It wasn't until i got home that i realised the bigger, first, fish had 3 tags in it. 1 is very old green one and 2 are newer (still old) yellow and sequential so i presume that they go together. ill report back when i can work out what the hell to do with them. call the number i guess. anywho. Mate and i took one home each for our efforts. The bigger one came in at 88cm and 9.2kg. Smaller one was about 65cm. Please don't ask where. Its not my spot and I hate lying to you guys We'll just call it south of my place and that'll do.
