holiday pink hunt

Im just going to keep a post for updates over the next week or so. should be able to get quite a few days in while im on holidays until 1 october.

Tuesday 16th i borrowed the old mans boat and headed out with Jake and Dave. We hit one of my reefy spots for some skippy fun to kick off but they were not too fussed about playing ball. Jake and i got a dozen or so herring in to use as bait for our next stop. Dave was sufficiently useless enough to keep up the banter.
Next stop was one of my spots that produces well at the end of the season for large pinks. We rolled up to get jake nailed on his plastic on a very heavy fish which felt more croaky than pinky. but as he was using 10lb line and 12lb leader he lost the battle and got pinged. We were just talking about giving it up when Dave's line went off with a typical angry pink take. A nice battle turned into Dave's biggest boat pink. he was a happy man and with the job done we headed home.

last night (19th) I headed out with my mate Darren. We left the ramp at just after 6pm and had a nice 6kn putt putt out to the spot. As much as i love going fast there is not much more relaxing than a slow steady cruise out to the spot. my first bait of half a herring wasnt in the water for 5 mins before it got nailed. I was using my Van staal 150 with 20lb and a 7kg daiwa beowulf rod and it was great fun having the rod bent in half and the reel screaming. a short time later my first pink came up at 83cm. As an elite athlete it was put straight into an ice bath to recover.
about an hour later my rod was again nailed. A much heavier fish and thumping runs which resulted in a fat, full of eggs, pink that measured in at 93cm. I was happy with one in the cooler so she was released after a quick photo and she powered off strongly.
I switched to plastics for a bit and Daz decided he wanted to use his 10lb gear for giggles. about an hour later he was on and it was a pretty valiant struggle. His little sienna has caught everything from 25kg mackies to butterfish and it performed up to scratch again and he boated a 96cm beasty which would have been easily 12kg. very fat and again full of eggs so she was sent back with a photo and perhaps a smooch or two.
It was an hour later again that Daz was on again and it was about 5 mins to muscle this one up and into the boat. At about 80 cm it was a good foodie size and it was given a chance to discuss the no vote in scotland with the first fish in the cooler.
I got hit again a short time later but i got rewarded for being a smart arse by getting reefed. karma is a bitch.
We packed up about 1030pm and headed in. A nice 4 hour-ish session that produced some nice results. We had some mates with us in another boat who had one hook up and no result for the same time. they were only 20m away so i dunno why they werent getting the love.

My uncle is over from queensland and eager to boat a big WA pnikie so we'll be out again tonight to see if we can get him onto some nice fish. Ill let you know how we go later.
ill post some pics as i get them.

tonight (saturday) no joy.
good fish on the sounder but nothing wanted to play. Dead baits, liveys, mulies all ignored.
spence and lefty tried to single-handedly depopulate the area of rays but also had no pink luck.

Really keen to get my uncle onto a good pink so i guess we will try again Tuesday!

Went out this afternoon to try again. It was the last chance to get my uncle onto a pink before he goes home thursday morning.
we hit a reef to chase some live herring (my fav bait) and got 20 in about half an hour and then lost the anchor to the reef. gutted. beyond gutted. Hopes of getting unc onto a good pink were fading.
So we decided to hit the spot and put a few drifts over rather than go in and source a new anchor. Sounder was initially bare but after 2 drifts i had a bit more of a hunt around and pinged a very nice school close to the bottom. I lined it up and we dropped right on top of them. Within seconds of hitting the bottom my dead hezza got nailed and i had a solid hookup. I handed the rod over and my uncle got to feel some solid thumping runs and a good size pinky. Plenty of unwanted advice was given from my old man and i took a short film of the shenanigans.
after a short fight a 75cm pinky came up and unc was stoked.
next was trying to get him to hook up himself and dad wanted to play too, of course.
but we were unable to raise any more fish. for the next half hour we could still see schools, but they were no interested in feeding. Then they moved higher up in the water to between 5 and 10m so perhaps they were having sexytime or something.
we left at around 630pm happy we had ticked a box for unc and he could head home happy.

might head out again tomorrow. Will depend on getting some stuff done around home and getting a new anchor sorted.

sorry for the abandonment fellas.
results were my most disappointing ending to a snapper season. all my normal haunts were either fish free, or loaded and not biting. I didnt fish every day, but probably every second day. Some long hours too.

oh well. the ripper run had to end eventually.

seeing a 6m great white circle the boat when spence and i were in warnbro was pretty much one of the best things ive been able to see while fishing. ive had humpbacks go right under my boat, hooked one too, swam with dolphins, had a whale shark within 5m of my boat, manta rays and all that stuff. but nothing compares to the awesome respect for this enormous killing machine. she just circled the boat a few times and checked us out before disappearing. cant describe how fantastic it was to see her. pure power.

anywho. ive been told im having a fishing holiday for a month or so. probably will slow down until december when the demersal ban is off.
what?? whiting??? sure!!!! haha

Unlucky on the fish front, awesome seeing whites. I got to see one do a full inverted launch from pretty close off the rocks this year.

yep unlucky on the pinkie hunt wookie but at least you have been fishing. nothing like seeing a big white. i had one of the back of my boat a few years ago which i reckon was about 4.5mtr. it done the big circle with its head slightly tilted so it could give us the big one eye burn. the funny thing was my deckie was sitting on the transom with his feet and shins in the water. the squealing that came from him when he saw it was funny as. we couldn't stop laughing at the noises that came out of him.

It's a shame Spence didn't get that on his go pro

It'd be good watching one of his videos that didn't have 27 minutes of driving and Lefty eating mars bars

A bit of Afro American wrap to Jaws

Spence finally with a fish worthy of a video.........I'd like to see that
