Headed out with dad on Friday to test out our new drunkmonkey's (RIP Azusa) on some skippy at my local skippy spot.
Conditions started great with a comfortable 20kn punch from PK ramp to the spot. We set in an easterly and got the burley going, but about 20 mins in the wind swung around to northerly. A short move and we were on the other side of the reef and burleying hard again. no dice. fishless and unloved. We sat there for about an hour before the wind changed again and came on at a steady WSW.
With the right wind i sat right on my fav spot and it produced a nice KG at about 50cm which went into the ice for dinner. A school of herring turned up very briefly and we only managed to get 2 to keep as liveys.
One was given some new jewellery and a celebratory balloon and sent on his way to sit out the back on the edge of the sand to see if any friends would show up. A short time later the balloon danced for us and the herring remember he had an appointment somewhere and he was terribly late. He took off at a fantastic rate of speed and promptly buried me as I was clamping down on the staals drag. The 150lb leader lasted about 2 seconds before parting on the reef.
Herring #2 happened to be also celebrating his birthday so he got a nice balloon and a present in his back and off he went.
We kept up the burley and managed to get a couple of nice sized skippy at about 30-35cm. they went into the live tank for now as a just in case the party gets pumping. A slow hour went by and it was getting to the point where we had to call it so I could get back in for an appointment. BTW drunkmonkey is bloody awesome! great rod.
The old boy yelled out (and possibly soiled himself) that the balloon had gone with a terrific splash from behind and half a second later the staal screamed again. This time I was a bit more ready and the drag was already reasonably tight. I clamped down further which resulted in exactly zero F**ks given by the beasty which took about 20 seconds to ping me above the leader on the braid.
I wound in and tested the drag which I could only just manage to pull off the spool by hand (they go up to about 40lb drag) and I had to get a cloth to loosen the drag knob. The fish had been peeling line off like it was on freespool. Dad said he saw the take which was a massive surface strike behind the balloon. It was a very silver shape that exploded out of the surface behind the balloon and looked about a metre long. I didn’t see it unfortunately but I saw the resulting disturbance in the water. Bugger. Big and very angry fish.
skippy #1 was given an opportunity to meet some new friends but we ran out of time. He and his mate got freedom and both swam off well. Skippy #1 was a bit trimmed, worn and had a small bath in tuna oil but I’m sure he is fine.
We've now re-rigged my TLD50 with 300m of 100lb braid and 400m of 100lb mono and the 8foot Wilson (my beach shark gear) to have another crack probably wed or thurs, weather dependant. Staal will have fresh leader and be ready to fight as will dads stella 20k and tld 30.
I’d say it will be the same result but 25-30kg sambos in 8m of water was always going to be a hard task. My TLD50 has subdued a 4m tiger from the old tub but that was all surface fun. Also Staal has more drag, but im hoping the long rod with thumbs on the spool may turn our luck.

Sunday saw the first round of try to out fish Bentley. We were intending to have our first real crack at the tings in Mandurah with a little help from my yak but Dave headed down early and called it a dud day. We ended up around rocko in some average conditions. The wind was not ideal which also made seeing anything through the water difficult. We got into some roving herring which were moving up and down the weed beds and we got a few on the surface lures before I changed to the mighty 5g twisty and got more consistent results.
we dropped a fair few which is usual and Dave picked up his first mini-flatty on a lure. We ended up with 9 which were frozen for future bait requirements.

So a couple of trips that were not overly productive, but each day had a great result in their own way. Some fun and excitement mixed with frustration. It’s like being married!
Ill let ya know how we go when we hit the sambos again. I’m very confident and equally hopeful that this spot will also produce my first metro Mackie in a couple of months.

Unlucky, 100lb braid should level the playing field somewhat

Seems to be a good playground for a bit of heavy gear fun.
I'd be heading back but then I don't like to loose.
