Hi all,

As always I was lucky enough to head out with Spence for a fish out wide from rocko in his new 22foot Seafarer Vagabond. Weather look great with moderate Easterlies dropping out from about 9 till 11.

It was a great day with plenty of fish and entertainment. We launched early at 5 and met some of Spences mates (Brothers Mike and Steven) and their old man who were going to follow us out in their tub as they were a bit inexperienced and wanted to see how it was done.

At the ramp we got some early entertainment as we watched the Steve and his Dad argue how to get the motor started for about 10 minutes. Eventually with quite a bit of cursing we headed out with the youngest brother Mike deciding to come on board our boat with it having more space.

The day started slowly but eventually we got into some fish. Soon on board came a nice KG around 50cm, Black arse, Fox fish and the to top it off Mike grabbed a stonker of a Baldie! Things were starting to go nicely for us but not so for the other boat, who much to Spences annoyance did not have a VHF radio but a UHF, which meant we could not communicate with them unless we yelled across the water. They also spent most of the time untangling rigs rather than having their line in the water!

Moving between spots we saw plenty of birds working, so we dropped a lure over and trolled for a brief period which resulted in a nice little southern bluefin tuna for sashimi later on.

Soon the fishing slowed so we decided to head out deeper about 40 Kms out. As we went to do this we get a yell from the other boat that they were taking on water! Oh oh ! We joined up and sure enough there was a fair bit of water in the hull coming in a a decent rate and only being pumped out by the deck wash as they did not have a bilge pump! Decisions had to be made and they elected to head in for safety. The best part of this story is that once on dry land they learned why they were taking on water... The day before the oldest son installed a new transducer into the hull and screwed it in with out using a marine grade silicone to seal the holes thus letting the water in....

Anyway separating the fishing got slower but again mike lands another big baldie! For the next few hours not much happens bar a few Black arse and small sambos coming on board. We had not send any dhus at all and really needed one to add some more fillets to the catch. Hours went by and I was beginning to question my reputation as the Dhu Whisperer.

Then with the seabreaze coming in I had a big hit and the characteristic thumps of a big Dhu on the other end of the line ..... for a bout 30 seconds the the hooks pulled. To make matters even worse it was not the hooks pulling but issues with my snell snapping. Never have i had this problem before but none the less a lost fish is a lost fish. Whilst i re did a new snell Spense re drifted the same area for no luck. Ready to go again we gave it one last go and sure enough i get another good hit and its Dhu on again. After a good fight up came a big boy almost ghostly silver and weighing a healthy 15kg.

Smiles all round we get the fish ready for photos when we notice i must be able to talk to the Dhu's as we find my previous snapped snell in the Dhuies mouth!!! One lucky bloke and one very unlucky and dumb Dhu!!

Thats it after this the wind picked up and we raced in. It was a great day and thanks to Spence as always for putting us onto the fish. I cant whisper to the Dhuies if i am not near them!

i hate you so much goodie. looks like a great day boys.

we headed out and as we dont have any marks we just his some ground where we know some decent lumps are and had a nose around. No big boy for us though.
total for the day was a nice queenie and a stonking blackarse caught by Daz, Some big sweep which were released, i got onto a good size sambo that gave me some grief on the 80lb with locked drag (fun times) and a few other bits n pieces.
got a swallowtail on the jig which was released and daz also picked up a goatfish which was also released.

at one point we had a school of 10kg+ tuna come up to the boat just out of casting reach but we made the decision to stick to the drift instead of playing with them. tried cubing to get them around but they moved off too quickly. im a bit pissed we didnt try to have some fun with them but i got overruled. nevermind.

good day to get the cobwebs out of the crushie and get out a bit wider than we've been in ages.

Not quite lefty.
Needs some work...new engine for starters. Fuel costs are enormous.
Also need to upgrade transducer to a thru-hull. Transom mount sucks on this straked hull.

New job hopefully in new year, to allow more expenditure on these luxury items.

Nice going guys. I've always found that you have a pretty good chance of hooking up to one just when the breeze swings and for the first hour. How much fuel did you go through spence?? My mate has a 135 evi rude and that chews the fuel on 626 Fraser. He has only got a 70 ltr tank so can get out to the 30's out from dawesville.

This has an 175 jonno on it.

100-150L trips now.
New 4 stroke later next year and that should halve

Suzuki, many reasons why, predominantly due to outboard game changing features which I expect others will follow suit in coming years.

I'm not sure wookie, lots of metal on those crushers with the hard top. Vagabonds my guess are lighter.

Hell yeah another nice Dhu, awesome effort. Pity it didn't bite when I was out there. Just slightly jealous. Haven't been out in my boat for a while, getting withdrawal symptoms. About time this wind let up.
