Things have been a bit full on since landing on the mainland and haven't had much time to wet a line.
First trip out before xmas in Port Phillip Bay resulted in only tiny Flathead and several bouts or boat rage with dopy amateurs.
I decided to try the freshwater scene to see if I could knock off a few species I've never caught.
First attempt was a drive around the Northern lake like Eppalock and Eildon but doing it on Oz day weekend was a waste of a 650km drive as it was shoulder to shoulder on the banks and jet skis and ski boats foaming up the water.
After asking for a bit of advice on a local forum (Fishing Victoria) some of the gent said to head west.
I did a run to Bullen Merri last weekend but the 8 degree start to the day hampered my spirits and none of the fish wanted to play either. I did pick up a lot of fish on the sounder so trip 2 was a must.
Yesterday was very different with 37 deg and I fished the afternoon instead of the morning. I went armed with $40 buck worth of live bait (Yabbies, Worms) and picked myself a nice spot with a very active sounder.
4 hours later and nothing touched I tied on some deep diving Fat dogs and went for a troll. I worked the drop off from 4 to 15 meters and 2nd pass the drag went off.
It took me a moment to realise what the sound was as it had been a while. I picked up the rod and a fish jumped clear of the water. YOU BEWTY!!
The Raranium 1000 was singing nicely with the fish taking several short runs before coming in nicely to make an easy netting.
The whole time I'm calling it for a good Bow but when I look closer it was a Chinook Salmon of 40cm. It was one of the reasons I picked the lake after reading up on the stocking (15 000 released in that lake in 2014).
Out the lures went on bang straight onto another one just a little smaller.
That's all I got for the day but was pretty happy I was taking home fish and set about the 2 hour drive home.

The bigger one had bright orange flesh but the small not so good.

Results of 8 hours at Western Port.
Flatty and KG provided a feed, the rest into the bait stash.
I think I landed 1 fish for every 3 rays hooked.
Big buggers I couldn't stop.
Poor stradic 4000 drag is buggered.
It wore the brunt of about 8 of them.

That's a pretty good feed there anyway, Flatty and Kg. I'm hoping to find the big Kgs down Albany way.

Good feed, Lee rayner has done a few quality tv shows on fishing western port.
I have been folling his stuff for a while. Haven't been to his shop yet as it is on the other side of town.
Channel 31 here is pretty good for fishing shows too. I'm recording about 8 of them and troll through for the local stuff.
It's mainly Pinky's and Gummy's with some KG's.
Following the fresh water stuff too and plan to chase some Yellow belly and Murry Cod while I'm here. The local forum has been pretty friendly too but like all forums spots are hard to come by.
The biggest challenge is the lack of structure. It's all abouit current flows and channels. There is some good info for Port Phillip but Western port has been a struggle. If I could get hold of a topical chart it would go a long way.
Also thinking about updating the Fish finder/GPS combo to include a chart plotter.
The more gear you buy the more fish you catch right????

Top feed there lefty. One would think so with the more gear purchased the more u catch. I tend to think the more gear you purchase the less time you have to go fishing

Fishing in Vic an particularly Melbourne can be a pain in the arse lefty had plenty of experience, if you get a good weather is worth heading west to Apollo Bay, Port Fairy or Portland can get some great ocean fishing that way (Have a look at Wildblue on facebook has up to date reports for Portland). Dartmouth and Lake Eildon are both good places for a good freshwater fish in your tinny and the creeks and rivers that feed in and out of Lake thompson are good for a trout bash and reasonably close to Melbourne.

Went fishing in Bullen Merri in early Jan with a mate when I was over home (was gonna whack a report up but ran out of time), we got 8 chinook but missed a fair few bites and hookups, try using little pieces of Pilchard on a tiny hook on about 50cm of 6lb leader with a decent running ball sinker above a swivel. The secret is burley though, need a burley pot that can be opened up when it hits the bottom and then fish in your burley and wait for them to come, they are pretty aggressive and will attack a bait more then once.

Starting to think the same thing Baz.
Western Port Yesterday.
Found a spot and got a couple of Jnr Pinks in the first lot of baits.
Thought it might produce some bigger versions until the wind change direction (complete opposite of forecast) and had wind against tide.
Tried several other spots but got nothing but tiny flatties and tonnes of weed.
Might sell the boat and go golfing instead.
