i had a six day break from work as of last thursday and i decided enough was enough and i was getting a couple of trips in...

Thursday I cracked into my first Yak based salmon in style with my Mooh out from palm beach. As we turned up at the ramp there was plenty of bird action which of course died off as soon as we launched. 20 mins in a massive bust up about 500m offshore had us peddling with a fury. We hit the bust up and had salmon leaping clear out of the water all around us. Mooh was a bit ahead of me and 20m to my right and i saw his popper get smashed just before my xrap got nailed. Both of us then realised our rookie mistakes as we both got double hookups with screaming reels. Of course our fish decided to have a meeting in the middle and we had some fun unwrapping our lines from each other for a bit. After a few mins we got separation and got some water between us. I dug in and had a great 20 min battle with a salmon that peeled off back to the bottom every time i got it beside the yak. I finally got it up and across my knees at which point the leader gave way and it released itself majestically back into the blue. I dont know how long it was but its head was on the left rail and the tail was in the water of the other side of my PA14 while it was across my knees. I would suggest it was easily 80-90cm and beastly thick. I grabbed rod #2 with its occupant patiently waiting and had little trouble bringing up the next one as it had played itself out somewhat and was a smaller model. I got it up and retrieved my xrap before giving it back to the blue. Epic fun. Mooh had lost his first one when it zoomed under and around his mirage drive but nailed his 2nd one to take home for a feed.
We spent a total 6 hours on the water and although that was the only action we saw we pretty much didnt stop moving the whole time. We had a troll down each side of the causeway for a possible pink but didnt produce.

Saturday afternoon I head out with my mate Darren to have a poke around for some more salmon in his boat. We took the 10lb and the 4lb for a bit of fun. Unfortunately we didnt see much of anything out and about. We were pretty stuffed from pre dawn starts with ANZAC day so we holed up at a random bump on the sounder and i pulled up a totally retarded salmon which was worth a few kilos but fought about as hard as a wet sponge. i didnt get a chance to use that 4lb.

Monday about lunch time I hit the water in crushy with the friar and my little man (he's 6) for his first boat fishing trip. Ive been meaning to take him out for a while but something has always come up. Pt Peron ramp was busier than ive seen it in a very long time and we saw a mass of boats as soon as we rounded the coathanger into the sound. Having had bad dealings with poor skippers before i headed us along the mangles/palm beach area to the south east corner of rocko to try avoid some crowds. there were a few boats there but there were also heaps of bust ups all around and no one seemed to be working them. The 20 or so boats just seemed to be sitting around watching everyone else. we eased up to a boil and i gave friar wheel. i grabbed the first rod to hand which was my 10lb stradic 2500 on the diawa swamp donkey which had a redhead lazer 50g attached. i piffed it out and handed the rod over to the squirt with instructions to wind hard. he gave it some curry and came up solid with a screaming drag and sheer panic on his face. It was pretty priceless. i helped him hold on and he started chanting 'lift and wind' like a champion. After about a 10 min fight with lots of salmon jumps, giggles and almost letting go twice (quick hands wookiee) he got the beast boatside and into the net. Happy boy and very happy dad. Not bad with a probably 4kg+ salmon on 10lb for his first effort. We spent the day cruising around from boil to boil and had a great day. Friar struggled for some reason (it was his turn) but i was having one of those days where every cast lands in the fish's mouth. we cast, jigged, trolled and drifted; all resulting in hookups. It was the most full on, furious days fishing ive had. There was over a hundred boats out there but most were really well behaved. There were a couple of bogan morons trolling through the crowds but other than that it was an almost festive atmosphere with plenty of banter thrown around. The redhead lazer 50g slug never came off my rod and i didnt lose any tackle all day.

My next challenge is to get one on 4lb.

Nice one Wookie.
Light line is fun for a fish or two but I reckon its boring for salmon. Heavier gear and hold on tight! yeehaa
