a couple of weeks ago me and a mate went out in the sound originally chasing snapper and mullaway. after a couple of fruitless hours and a flock of diving birds heading our way we decided to pull anchor and investigate what all the commotion was about. it was a massive school of salmon chasing the bait fish. we tied on our lures and away we went for the next few hours hooking up and landing salmon. they were around the 5kg mark. anyway after landing around 6 or 7 i decided to use my squid/whiting G Loomis rod for one last salmon. it took a while to hook up but when it did it took off like no tomorrow. after around 5 minutes i had the salmon near the boat and was trying to tire the fish out so i could get it in the boat and get my lure back. i cupped the spool to lock up the drag and mister salmon decided to try and swim back to bottom of the ocean. bang went the rod and the salmon took of for another run. in the end we got the bloody fish back to the boat and retrieved the line and lure. that salmon had the last laugh. feeling a bit pissed of we went chasing squid. We managed to get our limit although there weren't any really big squid there. we threw them in the scaling bag and headed slowly back to the ramp. i noticed that there were a few tentacles hanging out the bag so stop to investigate and yes the bag had ripped open and we lost 7 squid. so we tried another spot on the way back to the ramp and got them relatively easily. as we were approaching the ramp there were a few boats trolling around as the salmon had schooled up so the decision was made to have another crack at them. we only had slices and preferred casting to them so we stayed away from the trolling boats and had a couple of casts. the deckie hooks up and away he goes fighting his fish. i cast over to where he hooked up and zip. another cast over there and bang I'm on. by now Ray has his fish near the boat and at the same time he commented that the fish hadst jumped and i noticed that the fish was not a salmon but a had a distinct pink tinge to it, the drag was back off and after a few anxious moments he had his pinkie in the boat. this had me thinking maybe ive got one on the end of my line and sure enough i had one on around 5 kgs. they were caught on a tobys spoon and 40 gram wobbler. we hung around for another 30 minutes hoping to replicate what we had just done but to no avail just some more salmon. |

Nice one mate. I always thought there would be something lurking below the melee besides Salmon. Never target them as the lures has never gone past the salmon without getting hit. |
