I know metro Salmon run is happening now big time and lots of reports have been written about it so I am not going to bore you with what's happening out there. Just thought I share with you my experience jigging for salmon. Last week I was out with old mate Wallce chasing salmon. But as soon as boats converged, the bust up disappeared as the spooked fish dived deep. At that moment, I took a glance at the sounder and it was all lit up. And yet no sign of salmon on the surface so I thought why not try jiggin them up ? I cast out my 50g jig and try normal mechanical jigging with relatively slow rhythm. The salmon shouldered each other all the way to the boat to take a glimpse of my jig but none commited to bite. On my second cast, I jigged quickly like I was going for sambo and it got nailed straight away. My PE1 outfit screamed in protest. As I as using only 10lb Power Pro 8 Slick line, I thought why not try and see how much beating the rod and line could take and started pumping as hard as I could. Surprising, I brought the fish up in 2 min flat and the fish didn't even bothered to jump, probably due to exhaustion. For the last 2 weeks I had been landing salmon on 20lb spinning gear and it took me a while to bring a fish to the boat, albeit after multiple air-borne antics. With only PE1 jigging gear I knocked the fish out in record time and lip gripped the fish successfully in the boat in record time. I was pleasantly surprised at the results! I suppose the parabolic action of the jigging rod absorbed all the head-shakes and lunges dished out by the fish and at the same time allowed me to exert more hurt without tiring myself out. If I do get another deckie spot for salmon hunt this weekend, I'll try to target whatever that's lurking beneath the school, hopefully on jig! |

Can't argue with that, pull a lot of fish of the same size backwards, acrobatic and not that bad on the chew.

Same way I got on to them, jigging 85g raider on 50lb. Hold on tight! Not quite poling them over the side like 80lb but give a good strong tussle. Some of the biggest fish ive seen in a few years thats for sure. fat as. I love the hook ups after you ve just dropped a fish and crank again. Had one get airbourne attacking the lure at the side of the boat. 2minutes is about a minute and half too long! |

Nice one DT. Like most fish if you can keep the head turned there's not much they can do. |

nice catch Dogtooth. we got a few the other week doing the same thing. saw the school on the sounder so we just jigged with the slices and got nailed. 10lb is great fun but i might give numbskulls idea a go as well with full lock on 50 or 80lb and just enjoy the pure struggle. gotta give it a go! |
