Samson Fish

Went out for a fish yesterday with that beautiful weather that was forecast.... And they got it right for a change... A leasurely lunch time start at woodies and i motored to behind GI looking for some fresh squid and herring for some bait for the big boys..... But that didnt work as nothing was around except for butter fish and wrasse. I came across some sea grass and in between on the sand looked very tempting with some smallish whiting, So i thought. Better than nothing i said to myself, so in 5m water i baited up some mulie and occy and lobbed it in, initially spooking them but they came back inquisitive to poke around and took the bait.... you ripper they were KG's all between 30-40cmsI think they were in a rush to gobble up the offerings as there was an eagle ray swimming about the same sand patch... So i had fun on these for 30min and got my boat limit. So i motored out and went to the 5. There was bugger all swell and current so i looked around and found some new spots i want to explore later....set up some drifts, all of 0.4 knots, which made it picker central. All up out wider i only managed to bring up one undersize dhu.... I hope it was undersize, because as i put it onto the side of the boat it flicked off the hook and fell back into the water....Wont do that again, ill bring it all the way into the boat. I motored back in when it got dark as i forgot to pack a jumper and came across a flotila of boats on the North point of GI. Estimated 10-15 boats... All for the elusive pink i think. So i came home with a feed and had them tonight with chips and salad... Man i love my fish... I wish i had more luck sometimes... |

Well done, best eating fish in the ocean in my opinion. Next time keep your butterfish and wrasse. Not many Dhuies will pass up a fresh wrasse fillet and whole butterfish are good for pinkies. |
