Well I finally got a chance yesterday to take my new boat for its first fishing trip yesterday. It was a very late start for me this time, mid morning actually. I took my brother in law out who isn't well so it was just going to be out in Cockburn Sound for a few hours. The plan was to chase a Gummy Shark or two. So out we headed to an area that I've fished before that usually produces most trips. Anyway after a couple of hours of nothing besides one small Butterfish for my brother in law which was thrown back, 1st fish always gets put back for my Kiwi brother in law. No such rules for me on my boat but he's always done it on his. even making me throw back a Pinkie before lol. Anyway I was only fishing big so I could call my first fish a good one. After luch time we decided to head out past Garden Island towards Rottnest for a quick fish. It was blowing quite hard from the Northwest/westerly with a fair chop as well, but found it easy going with the new boat cruising along at a decent clip. Never again would I buy an aluminium boat, as this fibreglass was so much smoother. Fricken awesome. we arrived in one of my previous areas, way quicker than I thought it would take. Anchor down in 40+metres of water and lines in. A quick sandwich and coffee and we were relaxed and enjoying the day regardless. The winds started easing again and made for a pleasant afternoon even though still slightly humid. After a short while I got a screamer of a run on a unweighted bait, lots of head shakes and powerful runs. It went around the anchor rope two or three times so my brother in law tried pulling the rope up a bit so we could untangle it. It took too long and the fish managed to shake itself off the hook. Oh well missed the first run. Not long after this I got another good bite using herring for bait, it took a small run then lots of head shakes with a bit of weight. I guessed Dhu but didn't want to jinx myself, but up it came nice purple silver colour, yeharrr :) :) I yelled as it was slipped into the net. My first fish on my new boat what a way to christen it. I was stoked. No other quality fish was caught after this but there was a few crap fish and rays. port jacksons etc and one decent size skippy in the high forties, also a big heavy slow fish that kept on biting us off. Don't know what but big slow and powerful, maybe some sort of cod. Cruised back to ramp mid to late afternoon with a nice feed, a fillet each after a great day on the water. The start of a good year.

Headed out into Cockburn Sound for an all nighter Monday night with my son in law. Found it was blowing a gale but still went out to give it a go. It was a slow start with a couple of hours going by without much going on. After the berley had time to work the herring came on the chew and we changed to lures for a bit of flick rod fun. After about 50-60 fish in about an hour we got bored with herring fishing. Most were released with only a few kept for livies. We got a few runs going on but mostly were only Rays. banjo's. Shovelnose etc. Also a couple of small sharks not really worth keeping around 60cm- 70cm. We also had balloon rigs out with livies and got a few real big runs, screaming off but each time we got bitten off after a minute or two. We were only using 100lb wire and whatever it was kept on biting through it easily. We decided to have a quick shut eye/snooze before heading out further in the morning. Just dozing off when we heard what sounded like a huge wave or something heading for the boat. We jumped up and looked out the back, A big shark had grabbed my livie under the balloon and was heading directly towards the boat. A bit like in Jaws making a bow wave, scared the crap out of us. It bit through the wire and thrashed around on the surface for about 20-30 seconds then was gone. Wow exciting and scary at the same time. After this it was early morning so we headed out around Rottnest area. It didn't take long before the Samson fish showed up but they were too big to stop, making it to the reef every time. In between a couple of Breaksea cod were caught and a few Wrasse etc. Then my Son inlaw got a decent run but not Mr Sambo. It had a few decent head shakes and still actually put up a better than average fight. Up came a nice Dhufish for my son inlaw, 8 kilo and 75cm, his Pb Dhu. He was stoked. Not long after this we headed back in happy with our catch. We were fishing in a spot I'd previously been out to in my tinny which would normally Take around two hours to get in, but we halved that time in the new boat. Happy all round and looking forward to the next trip out.

Very nice fish dan well done to the son in law. I am a big fan off anchor and burley. There's not too many times when anchoring burleying most people don't come home with a feed.

Well I've finally made the move down to Albany to live, settled in nicely and even been out fishing a few times. Most trips I've covered quite a bit of ground just trying to see what's around. on the first trip out with my son in law and daughter we went out of the harbour and out past the Sound, (King George Sound) then around the corner and along the coast on the Salmon Holes, Gap side. We did quite a lot of kms mainly admiring the scenery and not a lot of actual fishing. We did a little bit here and there but found it hard to find decent fish. We found heaps of spots that looked good with extremely deep water close to shore/cliffs etc. 50-60 and even 70m of water all not too far from land. We had a few good runs between us but all missed or bricked on the bottom, or line snapped using too light gear. We did find a spot where we got into a few Swallowtail, a smaller version sort of like Red Snapper/Nannagui. Very nice eating anyway. I've since found this spot is pretty reliable for them so can at least get a feed if things are quiet Apart from that it was just a few small reef fish, nothing spectacular.
Next trip out was the opposite side of the coast out past the two island on the left side of the coast and down towards Two people Bay but not quite that far. Again I found heaps of good looking ground and reefs to explore. Still doing more exploring than fishing, I did manage a nice Samson fish 120cm aprox which put up a good fight. Also managed a couple of Blackarse Cod and other small reef fish again. I did also drop my first seen Dhufish right at the side of the boat. It spat the hook as I turned for the net, bugger not a huge one but maybe between 50-60cm.
Third trip out i tried around the Two Islands Michaelmas and Breaksea Islands, only a real short trip of a few hours. Nothing exciting except another couple of unstopable's and small fish again. Not sure what or how big the unstopable's were but must be huge. I also managed a nice Bonito after having a quick troll. Reckon there's heaps of them around if want. Also Samson fish everytime if you want.
Anyway fourth trip out, went out further to some reefs in deeper water coming to really shallow. Samsons again everywhere on the sounder. Got one around 80cm or so pretty quickly, then tried another reef. Blackarse cods again of average size. Then an awesome screaming run on a herring bait, then another run. then another run. then another run, on and on. Far out I was in for one hell of a fight. Not sure exactly how long it went on, but twenty mins maybe half an hour the biggest Sambo I'd ever seen myself was along side. Oh I forgot the shark I had boatside earlier twisted the gaff out of my hand and lost both the shark and gaff. Anyway how to get the Sambo on board? I tail roped it then dunked it down then hauled it up and over the side. Far out what a monster, but Ill let the pic do the talking. no other quality fish was landed after that except Blackarse again. So that's my start to fishing Albany my new home town. Can't wait till i find the big Red and Orange fish or Blue/Green etc.
Gotta get pics off my phone but should be up shortly.

Yeah biggest I've ever caught. Had to keep it to because it was knackered after I took a while to take the pic. Caught the big one while solo fishing. Anyway once home it was so heavy I nearly couldn't get it back out of the boat to clean it. I had to slide it half up the side again and tail rope it again, jump out and haul on the rope with my whole body weight. What an effort. Once cleaned I was surprised at how good and white the meat was. It looks better than what the Perth ones usually do . we'll see soon enough anyway.

Decided to head out yesterday morning early as the weather was looking good for a change. I've found the demersal fish to be hard work finding them. Always Pelagics around though if bored. Tried real hard close to and nearly on top of reefs at some stages, gotta be careful of the swell here. Anyway did a bit over 11 hrs on the water and landed One Groper a Harlequin and a few other small fish. Got 2 Bonito's for bait and missed a couple of Salmon throwing the hooks. Only needed a half hour at most troll for them.

I tried/trying a big line but not a touch so far,yep still down here trying lol. Might give it another hour or so just in case. Shore based this time for a change, got my hot thermos etc.

Seems to be a few around Freo at the moment. Went down to north mole yesterday to see if I could see any of these Salmon. Ended up getting one which was worth the drive. Anyway got talking to a older fella saying there was 45 caught at E-shed on Friday night which I thought was a bit out there. Later on got talking to a younger dude also at the mole and he was saying how it was mayhem here Friday night also with 53 caught there over night, as well as pinky's. By the look of the scales down there at moment there maybe some truth to the story.

Headed out again yesterday morning from Albany with my daughter. This was only her 2nd boating trip. The forecast was for light winds but 3m swell. It was real good to start with but the further we went out the more the wind came up. Anyway out we went. We tried close to a reef for a bit, real close trying for a Blue Groper but it got quite hairy with the 3m+ swell making some surfing size waves a bit too close. We headed out deeper searching for new ground, around 60-70m. First cast my daughter hooked up to a huge Blackarse Cod and landed it after a bit of a fight. High fives and yahoos all round. Shortly after I got a Red Snapper/ Nannagui, not large but over the size limit so in the esky it went. We drifted off the spot and it went Quiet for a while so we came back to the mark. We both got another decent Blackarse Cod each. A few more drifts over the mark with a couple of scorpion fish and wrasse and and a couple of missed good fish that got off half way up. By now the swell was up with the wind making it very sloppy/rough. We were just about to move in closer when I got another hook up and landed my first Gummy Shark from Albany. Yeharr. On the way back in we decided to troll around the islands in closer. It was a lot calmer here as well. We only did about half an hour trolling and got a double header hook up and landed a Bonito each. What an awesome day we were having, after one more missed fish and a Salmon landed we headed in,we were stoked with our day.

Headed out last night for my first all nighter from Albany. Far out just slightly cold and a poor result considering the effort. Although it was still an adventure. Quite a bit rougher than Perth standard. Some things remain the same, had a few big Stingrays,at one time two straight after each other not giving me a break. Had a big shark eat my berley pot at the side of boat, just a quick bump and it was gone. Had a slightly smaller Mako cruise by a couple of times but no hook up. Caught a small Hammerhead just so it wasn't too boring,it was released. Caught a few Skippy on the flick rod, tried a couple for bait and kept one. Early morning saw and landed a about 8 Bonito only keeping two. Gonna try eating one as its been years since I've ate one. Might have to keep more if it's okay as common as anything here. Also caught a heap of Snapper in a couple of locations but all too small. Think I might just l leave it to mostly day trips in future. As daylight increased it actually got calmer and calmer but I was too tired to stay out.

Headed out from Albany about a week ago. Had a local on board so thought we'd get into the fish for sure. :P Headed out a reasonable distance and found a nice spot, a bit this side of Eclipse Island. As soon as we pulled up i threw a line over and looked at my decky, he wasn't putting a line over and was already going green. Far out not a good start but he said don't worry about me....... and I didn't. I did feel a little bit mean by the end of the day though as he continued to berley up on and off all day. Things were very quiet for most of the day with just the occasional bite. I also had a surface bait out with a scalie mac out for bait and got a bit of a run. I struck and could feel a bit of weight but not a lot, it sort of felt like an average Gummy Shark would. I pulled it towards the boat and it spat the hook. While the bait was in all of a sudden a big Shark came rushing at the side of the boat so close I could've touched it. It circled a couple of time then sort of disappeared. I changed rods and put the Tiagra 30lrs out with a slab of Bonito on it. Within 30 secs to a minute I was on. Very fast screaming runs and some thrashing on the surface, a decent Mako Shark of close to or around 1.8m-2m in length. It took off around the front and I had the anchor out even though it wasn't on the bottom. It wrapped around the rope of course and was still taking line at a fast rate of knots. The deckie went forward to try and sort it out, but once there had to be violently ill/seasick and couldn't do anything else, therefor the line continued to cut into my anchor rope. Eventually decky managed to move down the back and I went up front to untangle the line and rope. Under and over a few times finally got it sorted. It was cut nearly all the way through only hanging on by a strand. After this it took another half hour or so to get it boatside. I thought it might be a keepable size just so tried to get it on board. Well 10 mins aprox of trying and no joy as deckie still wasn't a lot of help, he tried but was struggling and eventually we lost it.
BUGGER not even a pic but awesome fun. Anyway a bit later I got another run and and another Mako took the bait but a lot smaller. It still fought well but no where near as long and once boatside I just hauled it straight in on the wire trace. It went a bit mental trying to bite/eat everthing even managing to disconnect the fuel line before it met the Priest/bat and was pacified. As to the rest of the day only one leatherjacket and a blackarse plus a couple of wrasse. Overall I had a good day but don't think my decky did. Not sure if he's keen to come out again.

The Priest/baseball bat lol. Yeah would've kept it if it was the right size. Would've gone home immediately if we'd landed it. Meat for two families for sure. Just quietly I think the decky thought I was slightly mad for trying though and glad when it broke free. I actually had it by the tail for a bit but couldn't hang on. Powerful beasts even when worn out. I thought we were going to get it aboard for sure. It was at least the size of my big sambo possibly even bigger. In hindsight we should have used the Priest/bat at the side of the boat first. We had a rope ready to tailrope it but couldn't quite get it.

No wasn't using berley at all just big baits drifted down. I reckon berley would probably help though. Just use big baits, even the small Mako took a big Bonito head and frame.

Haven't been out for a few weeks since the Mako session, and been getting a bit restless and withdrawals etc. I woke up around 5am yesterday morning but it was overcast and the wind was blowing so back to bed. Got up around 7am for breakfast and noticed wind had dropped off again, so thought I'd finish breakie and slowly get ready and try my luck. I took my time but eventually was ready and guess what, the wind was back. Bugger but I still decided to go anyway. Headed out into King George Sound and found a bit of a swell plus some wind but kept on going. The plan was to go head out past the two islands and see where I'd go from there. It got rougher the further I went with a 2m-3m swell plus the wind to contend with. I thought the wind would make it a bit difficult for drift fishing which is what I wanted to do. so I changed plans and decided to try new ground to me but back in closer, maybe some whiting or skippy. I spent a couple of hours looking around and found a few potential spots but I couldn't bring myself to stop and fish for them, I wanted bigger fish. So I changed plans and headed out again. It was closer to lunchtime before I actually started to fish. I found a good rocky/reefy structure and decided to drift over it a few times. I could feel what seemed like tiny pickers or something mouthing the bait on quite a few occasions but think the drift was still a bit fast. Eventually I got a Blackarse Cod which was an alright start, then a bit later a nice Harlequin. I still kept on feeling this fish mouthing my baits without hooking up, so I decided to drop the anchor. Well first cast after dropping the anchor I drifted a bait down with just a light sinker, and bang I was on. Some solid head shakes and thumps and a bit of weight to it. Also did a few runs as well against a heavy drag but it wasn't long before up it came. Yahoo my PB Groper which went a bit over 80cm in length. I decided i didn't need anything else so had a coffee and packed up and headed in, happy with my days fishing. Starting to enjoy the Southwest. :)

Headed out from Albany early Wednesday morning. It was still really dark so just took my time and was fishing aprox 5.00am. Well it started really slow with hardly a nibble till about 1st light. Then it was a Wobbygong which I released at the side. After that a couple of Port Jacksons. I changed to a flick rod and got a few small reef fish and some Swallowtail. Also got blown away about 8 or 9 times as well on the flicky. Something decent that liked small baits. Didn't hook them on bigger gear or baits. As it came daylight I moved out further again and started drifting over new ground to me. It was an awesome day weather wise but fishing was slow but every now and then I'd get a fish or two. Some nice Blackarse Cod and a couple of Bight Redfish/ Red Snapper or Nannagui as some people call them. A few wrasse and Sergeant Baker as well. The Sergeant Baker turned into Shark bait on the surface. Got one good run then it swam towards boat and just got off the hooks. Had a few whales in the vicinity as well just to top an awesome day on the water.

Yes and yes, permanent holiday. Though I slightly miss my Cockburn Pinky and Gummy adventures every now and then.

Good stuff Dan, always good to see you're out and about salying fish.
Its been a slow season so far in some of the usual haunts, a few singles but the schools are very skittish.
They say "the early bird gets the worm"... Not a problem, worms all yours birdy. I'll get up around noon and fish a dry fly - Hank Patterson

Nice playground you have there Dan, some quality fishing you have been upto.
Give a man a beer and he'll waste an hour. Teach him to brew and he'll waste a lifetime.
