Well I finally got a chance yesterday to take my new boat for its first fishing trip yesterday. It was a very late start for me this time, mid morning actually. I took my brother in law out who isn't well so it was just going to be out in Cockburn Sound for a few hours. The plan was to chase a Gummy Shark or two. So out we headed to an area that I've fished before that usually produces most trips. Anyway after a couple of hours of nothing besides one small Butterfish for my brother in law which was thrown back, 1st fish always gets put back for my Kiwi brother in law. No such rules for me on my boat but he's always done it on his. even making me throw back a Pinkie before lol. Anyway I was only fishing big so I could call my first fish a good one. After luch time we decided to head out past Garden Island towards Rottnest for a quick fish. It was blowing quite hard from the Northwest/westerly with a fair chop as well, but found it easy going with the new boat cruising along at a decent clip. Never again would I buy an aluminium boat, as this fibreglass was so much smoother. Fricken awesome. we arrived in one of my previous areas, way quicker than I thought it would take. Anchor down in 40+metres of water and lines in. A quick sandwich and coffee and we were relaxed and enjoying the day regardless. The winds started easing again and made for a pleasant afternoon even though still slightly humid. After a short while I got a screamer of a run on a unweighted bait, lots of head shakes and powerful runs. It went around the anchor rope two or three times so my brother in law tried pulling the rope up a bit so we could untangle it. It took too long and the fish managed to shake itself off the hook. Oh well missed the first run. Not long after this I got another good bite using herring for bait, it took a small run then lots of head shakes with a bit of weight. I guessed Dhu but didn't want to jinx myself, but up it came nice purple silver colour, yeharrr I yelled as it was slipped into the net. My first fish on my new boat what a way to christen it. I was stoked. No other quality fish was caught after this but there was a few crap fish and rays. port jacksons etc and one decent size skippy in the high forties, also a big heavy slow fish that kept on biting us off. Don't know what but big slow and powerful, maybe some sort of cod. Cruised back to ramp mid to late afternoon with a nice feed, a fillet each after a great day on the water. The start of a good year.SnappaDan |

Headed up to Perth last week, only got one trip out fishing though. It was an all nighter but ended up a strong easterly blowing all night. Tried out near Rotto but had to come back in closer. So fished behind Garden Island. Herring galore the water was boiling with them, also skippy as well and a few wrasses as well. Fairly quiet on the big lines with 4 undersized Dhu's a Wobbygong a few Rays and one Sambo. That was my Perth trip.

Came back to Albany and went out on Saturday, headed out with my son inlaw. First stop saw lots of wrasse and parrot fish, Sargent Bakers, etc on the bottom plus a heap of blackarse cods. Mostly small or just oversized. All went back to start with. On the surface the Herring were boiling again,Two at a time. I certainly can't notice a shortage anywhere.😛 Caught a few for bait and carried on. Overall it was quiet on the bigger fish but we both had a few missed opportunities but still ended up with a feed. A couple of Red Snapper and Blackarse's, also another Wobbygong released and another undersized Dhu. |

Not here in Albany yet, have tried on the surface a few times. Got a couple of Sambo's and also a couple of Shark hook ups. I'll have to try it next time on the bottom. I have a live bait tank but no aerator yet and was going to try it on this trip, but put too many in the tank and they'd died by the time I moved out deeper. |

Headed out last Sunday for a session big swells but low winds made an interesting trip. The swell was averaging around 3m but going as high as 5m+. Did some trolling for a while but got nothing.Tried in shallow for a bit 30m,lots of small fish wrasse and cods etc. Headed out deeper 60m-70m but extremely quiet. Just a couple of just size Blackarse Cod only kept one. A couple of missed runs and one real good hookup (felt a lot like a big Dhu or similar) that got off three quarters the way up. Then right at the end of the day got another okay hookup and got a reasonable Gummy Shark, so at least I went home with a feed. |

Headed out on Wed just gone. Did a fair bit of exploring along the coast again. Down past Salmon Holes to The Blowholes area. I found lots of Breaksea Cods again. They were at most spots I tried. Most were size or bigger so can't complain too much. Got a few of the usual wrasse etc and Sargent Baker as well. I tried eating a bigger Sargent Baker last time. It tasted alright but thousands of small fine bones, so definitely a baitfish from now on. Also scored a nice Amberjack to top the day off, so another good day out in the southwest.

Had a hotbite on Pink Snapper overnight, not huge but size and my first encounter with them since moving here. A land based session to released eight others and left them biting. Got about half of them on the flick rod so good fun.

Been down a couple more times Pinky Breaming land based around Father's day weekend and just after. Got a few more each time all similar sizes of around 52cm give or take a cm. Took my rellies down one night and landed four between three of us in a few hours and a couple of missed hook ups as well. They were stoked. Headed out in the boat yesterday for the first time in a while. Had a ripper session with a few fish being landed on jigs which is new for me. Got Swallowtail, Red Snapper, Pink Snapper, Harlequin and Breaksea on jigs but the biggest Snapper still came on bait so not quite ready to completely bait free yet.

Headed out early yesterday morning from Albany hoping for some slightly calmer winds and weather. Well once out of King George Sound the forecast was wrong. The swell was close at around 2m but the wind was a fair bit more than predicted. The location I was going to usually take an hour and a half to an hour and 45 mins but this trip took nearly 2hrs 45mins. So yeah slightly rougher. I had the boat airborne just a few times. Anyway arrived and started fishing. It was extremely quiet for ages but I persisted. All of a sudden I got a screaming run which I thought Sambo for sure so wasn't overly concerned if I landed it or not. I even relaxed enough to finish my sandwich while letting the fish do its own thing. Imagine my surprise when I spotted Pink, I got a bit more serious about guiding it towards the net. Yahoo I was stoked when it finally swam into the landing net and I swung it on board. After that it was quiet again for a fair while before eventually a couple of Wobbygong were caught and released then a decent Harlequin, yahoo another prize specimen. That ended being it for the day besides a few small Blackarse Cod,some Wrasse and Leather jacket. So I headed home surfing the swell and waves that were going my direction this time for a lot of the way home. One happy Fisho. |

Headed out yesterday again, weather was flat calm for the trip out. Low winds and swell to start but within 30mins of fishing the wind picked up, causing some decent waves with white caps again. Any way I persevered and had a reasonable day. Another Breaksea Cod and Harlequin to take home plus a variety of other fish all released. Landed a legal Dhufish but let it go to catch at a later date. Three Wobbygong landed, and a smallish Yellowtail Kingfish as well. So another okay average trip out from Albany.

Headed out on Sunday morning just gone. A slightly later start than I wanted as couldn't find my headlamps. Anyway got on my way after first light. I found pretty big seas again, not the swell but just big waves which is worse I reckon. On the way out I was sort of going in the same direction for a lot of the trip. Getting good at surfing lol. After an hour and 45mins or so arrived in the area I wanted to fish. I found a mate already out there. It was quiet for both of us for quite a long while. Eventually we started getting an occasional fish but we really had to work for them, with many different drifts and anchoring spots. Between us there were Pink Snapper, Harlequins, Breakseas, Red Bightfish/Nannagui, Wobbygong, a variety of cods and wrasses etc. So all in all not too bad by the end of it. The trip home was slow and steady again at well over 2hrs. My take home catch was Harlequins, Nannagui's and a Breaksea. Mostly caught on jigs.

Headed out on Tuesday just gone 20th Oct from Albany. I went out to a different spot than usual. One I'd been over a few times before and marked as a spot of interest. It was slow going for a bit but started getting some interest. Ended up getting four Dhufish but only one that was size. They all went back to get bigger . Got one decent Queeny, my first since being down here so I was stoked. I noticed as I was pulling in my fish, there was fish following them up. They were Yellowtail Kingfish but wouldn't bite no matter what. I thought I saw a big shadow, then I saw it, a big Mako Shark. Then just as I was pulling in a decent size fish it took it whole biting me off. I had another quality rig made ready to go. 8/0 circle ebay hook, 100lb black wire plastic coated. The ones you buy for $3-$5 for 10m. The only upgrade was a couple of extra crimps. I grabbed it and put it on my Tiagra 30Lrs with 30lb mono and dropped it down with a smelly old Herring. It was taken on the drop within 5secs. It felt the hook then instead of running came up and looked at me eyeball to eyeball. It stayed there for ages, maybe 2mins just shaking it's head around violently. I managed a couple of quick pics one handed while holding the shaking rod in the other. It wasn't easy. Then it exploded taking off on huge runs one after another jumping 3 times 2m-3m in the air and many more half body out of water surface action. This went on for roughly an hour before I got it boatside. After a while I got it tail roped and tied off at the rear of the boat. It just hung there straight down for a bit. I tried lifting it but way too heavy. Then it started thrashing around and looked like it could possibly land in the boat. It was too big to keep anyway so I cut the hook and rope and let it swim away. Wow what an adrenalin rush.

Headed out a couple of times this week. Sunday was a bit of a rough day making it real hard work. The swell ranged from 2m-6m, then the wind came up as well. Had to come back a lot earlier than usual but still managed another Snapper and Harlequin again. Then went out again on Tuesday a completely different day. 1.5m average swell and hardly no wind. Decided to head out to the shelf for something different. Went out with my son inlaw, and fished various depths to 230m expecting a bonanza day but the sharks had other ideas. They were everywhere and hungry for our fish. My son inlaw Landed one good Red Bight fish/Nannagui and big flathead and I got a few big Leatherjackets .I lost a big Dhu that got off the hook a few metres under the boat that I could see clearly. The only demersal I got close to catching. So put on a eire trace and immediately hooked up to a nice Hammerhead that gave me some curry for a bit. Finally landed it and decided to keep it as couldn't get anything else. Bled it and threw Head scraps and blood back in water.Within a minute the sounder was beeping from another shark under the boat. So son inlaw threw a big bait out and was on quickly. This was an even bigger Shark and gave gave him a good fight for a while. When it was boat side we took a few pics and released it as this was too big again to keep. We called it quits after this as we still couldn't get any demersals past the sharks. They were in plague numbers for some reason. So just another couple of average Albany fishing trips.

Nah you can keep the deep water stuff aye. I did land a Banded Sweep in 230m then it snagged my son inlaws sinker on the way up and I thought I had a much bigger fish, and was half knackered pulling it up. So we moved back to 160m but the sharks followed. |

Headed out again yesterday but stayed in closer and shallower than usual, mostly around 30m deep. It was another very quiet day even though I tried a few spots. Even tried real close to a beach for some whiting but couldn't even get one, just a few tiny Flathead. Ended up not far from the Blowholes area and got a feed. Three nice Harlequin and Skippy, caught on the light gear so good fun. Landed an undersized Dhu that didn't survive going back, it floated back up even using a release weight. A bit of a bugger but sometimes it happens. Dinner for a shark for sure. Besides that just the usual wrasses etc and no proper big runs at all, but still a nice day out. There was a big bushfire in the Torndirrup National Park that was fairly spectacular to view from the boat.

Headed out real early on Mon morning, 2am on the water. The forecast was for awesome weather for a change. It was slightly windier to start but that eased right off later. It was pitch black to start with as some dark clouds were above blocking any light at all. That also cleared quickly but it was a slow trip out to my chosen ground. I anchored in 60m of water and started to berley. It took a while but once the fish started, it was non stop action for hours. Had a school of Yellowtail Kingfish around all morning. They were hard to tempt and not huge but got a few catch and release. Also on the bottom the demersals were on as well along with a variety of reef fish. Harlequin,Breakseas, Foxfish, Snapper 38-52cm all of these Snapper were released, got a Sambo, Queeny and a good Snapper of around 86cm on a live wrasse as bait. It put up a decent fight and I was stoked when I spotted the pink colour and it's size. Also caught some skippy all released except one and a Snook as well, bait for next trip.Man what an awesome trip out. Albany rocks.

Headed out yesterday morning early for the first trip this year. Pitch black on the way out, my headlamp was looking like a spotlight. A bit eerie when you can't see the water/waves coming. Not that it rough, just a bit of swell etc and that glassed off later for an awesome morning. The only problem I think the fish didn't like it too much. I found fish showing at a few spots but struggled to get a bite/hit. Had Kingies around for a couple of hours, small Tuna for 5-10mins, various bottom fish showing. I only managed a couple of Scorpion fish and Sargent Bakers etc plus two or three half hearted failed better strikes. Then in quick succession I got a stonker Skippy and a Queeny then quiet again. Around lunch time the wind and chop came up so I went home early. The two fish were kept and eaten straight away for dinner plus left overs tonight. Both tasted real good fresh. So a slow start to the year but upwards and onwards. |

Headed out late Friday night early Sat morning, originally was going to do an all nighter thurs night but plans changed slightly. So I ended up at my spot around midnight and got a berley trail going. Heaps of fish showing and first drop up came a nice Nannagui, a good start but slow after that for quality fish. Got a few Port Jacksons and a Ray. Got two just size Dhu's which I released, and then quiet again. I decided to move so went a km or so and tried again. Plenty of Skippy kept me entertained for a while on the light gear, most released but just a couple kept as well as a couple of Swallowtail. I also had two bite offs while hooked up to decent fish again and some missed hook ups as well. Landed one more decent Breaksea Cod. By this time it was daylight and no more runs, just the Skippy hanging around and the breeze back in I called it a day. A slow two hour trip back in against the wave till I rounded the corner back into King George Sound. I was surfing most of the way until while doing about 30kms I went over one wave and under the next. I got a huge amount of water straight over the top, luckily I had the motor trimmed so the nose pointed up and it pulled it through. I very nearly turned into a submarine in an area I considered safe. I reckon if I had of actually eased of the throttle quickly I might have made it worse but trim and speed actually pulled it back up and through luckily. Heres to the next fishing adventure 🎣

Reckon you timed that departure perfectly, the wind picked up pretty quickly over 30min or so. Should have stayed on that first spot a little longer too haha |

Good to see your not going soft with fishing in below average weather Dan. Do you eat the skips or bait em? |

Yeah I eat the Skippy sometimes, fillet, skin them and make sure I cut any blood bits out and yeah not too bad. Also use a few for baits as well. As to that stupid wave incident that took me by surprise that's for sure. A little bit quicker and it could've been a different story again. It was a huge weight of water that the boat shook it off amazingly well. Still got a bit in the boat but luckily I just upgraded my bilge pump to a slightly faster one recently. I reckon if I was in my old tinny it would've went straight down without stopping. Edited by SnappaDan, Jan 27 2016, 08:13 AM.

A good scare never hurts every now and them to keep us on our toes. Very easy to end up a statistic in a boat. |

Headed out early yesterday morning around 4am ish. The forecast was for 3m swells decreasing and light winds. Swell was 3m in King George Sound and once past there it increased even more. I measured on the sounder 5m+ quite regular for a while. It did ease a bit later on but the wind increased instead. Any way headed around the Headland and towards Two Peoples Bay side for a change. It's an area I've fished a few times before. The bites were slow but decent when I did get them. The swell was making it hard to stay connected to the bottom. Anyway ended up with a couple of Queenies (Blue Morwong ) fairly quickly and a nice Cuttlefish on a jig. Missed a few other decent bites and one good fish that came off half way up. Did a bit more drifting around for a couple of small Breaksea Cods released. Then a bit later got a bit of a run and a few better head shakes and up came a nice Gummy Shark. My favourite eating shark and starting to work out where to look for them. One last drift over a reef and a nice Bight Red Fish came up. Time to head back in surfing a slightly smaller swell, not by much though. Tried one more close in spot but nothing worthwhile. Still pretty happy with my results.
