Well I finally got a chance yesterday to take my new boat for its first fishing trip yesterday. It was a very late start for me this time, mid morning actually. I took my brother in law out who isn't well so it was just going to be out in Cockburn Sound for a few hours. The plan was to chase a Gummy Shark or two. So out we headed to an area that I've fished before that usually produces most trips. Anyway after a couple of hours of nothing besides one small Butterfish for my brother in law which was thrown back, 1st fish always gets put back for my Kiwi brother in law. No such rules for me on my boat but he's always done it on his. even making me throw back a Pinkie before lol. Anyway I was only fishing big so I could call my first fish a good one. After luch time we decided to head out past Garden Island towards Rottnest for a quick fish. It was blowing quite hard from the Northwest/westerly with a fair chop as well, but found it easy going with the new boat cruising along at a decent clip. Never again would I buy an aluminium boat, as this fibreglass was so much smoother. Fricken awesome. we arrived in one of my previous areas, way quicker than I thought it would take. Anchor down in 40+metres of water and lines in. A quick sandwich and coffee and we were relaxed and enjoying the day regardless. The winds started easing again and made for a pleasant afternoon even though still slightly humid. After a short while I got a screamer of a run on a unweighted bait, lots of head shakes and powerful runs. It went around the anchor rope two or three times so my brother in law tried pulling the rope up a bit so we could untangle it. It took too long and the fish managed to shake itself off the hook. Oh well missed the first run. Not long after this I got another good bite using herring for bait, it took a small run then lots of head shakes with a bit of weight. I guessed Dhu but didn't want to jinx myself, but up it came nice purple silver colour, yeharrr I yelled as it was slipped into the net. My first fish on my new boat what a way to christen it. I was stoked. No other quality fish was caught after this but there was a few crap fish and rays. port jacksons etc and one decent size skippy in the high forties, also a big heavy slow fish that kept on biting us off. Don't know what but big slow and powerful, maybe some sort of cod. Cruised back to ramp mid to late afternoon with a nice feed, a fillet each after a great day on the water. The start of a good year.SnappaDan |

I haven't been out for a while due to having some back problems, but was getting really bored and withdrawals setting in. Monday night and Tues forecast was the best for quite a while to so decided to go anyway. A good supply of prescription medicaion and off I went. Got to my local ramp and was confronted by a huge line up of boats coming in from the last day of the long weekend. I waited 45mins or so helping a few get in quicker before getting my chance to launch. I was on my way but within 5-10 mins I realised I shouldn't really be going out cause of my back but popped a lolly (Tramadol) and kept going. An hour and a half later just as last light faded I anchored in 60m of water, deciding this is the one and only spot to try as didn't want to pull the anchor much. The fishing stated immediately but mostly fish I didn't want. Port Jacksons, Banjo's, shovelnose,Wobbygong etc. By this time I'd nearly had enough cause my back was nearly ready to give in. I decided to pack up and go home so pulled up one of two lines out. Just as I went to pull in the second one I got a reasonable bite and short run. It ended up being a legal Pinkie of around 45cm. It went back in anyway but got me keen to stay a bit longer. So time for another lolly (Tramadol ) and keep on fishing. It was the start of constant regular action for the rest of the night through to morning. Lots of Snapper mostly between 42cm 46cm and only one over 50cm which I kept. Also a few Breaksea Cods with the largest around the 50cm mark as well. Landed a queeny of similar size and got into a school of skippy high 30cm-40cm so had a ball. Also lande a reasonable shark and had one bite off on 100lb wire. Had a visit from a Mako Shark of around 1.6-1.8m which came that close to the boat I could've patted it. Overall I kept a decent feed, relased a few and got over my withdrawals. Back home now sore but happy.

Headed out again on Wed night with forecast of seas and winds easing overnight. Swell were supposed to be around 2m and dropping, but ended up being around 3m on average. As I went past some rocky outcrops the swell went up around 5m in some sets. Anyway I carried on out to my spot taking a bit longer than expected. My spot was in around 60 and the swell and waves weren't quite as bad. It was a slow start but my first fish was an undersize Dhu. I must be on okay ground I thought and if one Dhu was there I reckoned there might be more. There was but all of similar size and all going back with the release weight. It was a slow night but just enough bites not to get bored. I had a berley slick out hoping to get some herring for baits but they didn't show. What did show was Swallowtail normally a bottom feeder but coming right up my trail. So had a bit of fun with them and got a feed. During the night a few just size Pinkies showed up for some more fun but released them to get bigger. Four big Rays tested my back problem and made it uncomfortable and in need of lollies (pain killers ) A Wobbygong also took my bait and dragged up and released. Eventually I got another decent bite and some thumping and up came a legal size Dhu. Yep that's a keeper I said to myself. Also had another couple of bite offs through 100lb wire, so the toothies were around but didn't land any. A few decent skippy were also caught and released as well. Headed home around 8am still in sloppy conditions but they definitely were easing as I headed in. An hour and a half trip. Just another fishing trip out from Albany.

I woke up nice and early on Thurs morning just gone, and realised the weather was pretty good for fishing. No wind at my place so decided it was a plan. Had breakfast, made some sandwiches and coffee to take out. Got the boat organised and was on the water at 1st light. Headed about 23kms roughly from ramp but still close to land and arrived at a nice rocky outcrop. There was an aprox 2m swell out here smashing against the rocks but the wind was blowing away from it, so decided to come right in close, drop my bait and drift off. Hoping for a decent groper against the edge. I did this over and over for ages with little results. I tried two lines different baits and jigs but got stuff all. Then went to check one line and got a bite on the other so put the first one down on the floor,it was still out though. As I went to grab the other rod something took the one on the floor and ripped it into the air about 2m and and about 10m out to sea and was gone. Gladiator Titan 6500 and Shimano Tcurve 200 gone. Fark unbelievable and I missed the fish on the other line. Tried to jag it up but no luck. Eventually I moved spots about 6-7 times and gradually caught a feed but slow going. I missed two real good bites/run that felt like big Groper but got back to snags/weed and got off. Had a floating big bait out which got chewed off .It bit aprox 2m of wire leaving just a few cms left. Ended up with a couple of Breaksea Cods, a Harlequin, some Swallowtail, Skippy and Wrasse. |

I actually got out last Thursday for a bit of a fish. The forecast was for around 2m swells and dropping. I headed out early in the dark and any moon was hidden by a dark menacing looking clouds and a slight drizzle. As I got out of the Sound (King George Sound ) I was met by 2.5m+ swell, plus waves on top occasionally showing a white cap. I had to punch into the waves and took around an hour and 50 mins to get to my spot and I didn't go as far as normal trying a new spot to me that I'd marked previously but not fished. I anchored up and put a berley slick pot out, just hanging on the surface at the side. Fishing wasn't fast but a steady stream of bites, missed hook ups and occasional fish came on board. A few times I spotted a big shadow hanging around just out of clear view. I pulled in a few Swallowtail, a couple for bait and some kept. I was just getting one off the hook and bang something (Shark ) hit the side of the boat and took my berley pot. Fark not another one. Anyway morning draged on and got a decent Breaksea Cod, a Harlequin and two sized Dhu's, one kept and one going back on the release weight. I missed a couple of Snapper runs before finally managing to hook and land one. Yahoo at 82 cm I was stoked. Thing went quiet after that with a couple of decent 50cm Skippy coming on board, got a couple more bite offs, a Port Jackson Shark, a couple of Leatherjackets released and decided to call it a day. During the morning the swell and waves combined went as high as 6m for a while then eased back again. Another typical Albany fishing trip.

On average I do around 25kms roughly in 1hr 45mins down here in Average Albany conditions. Swell can be anything from 2m to 6m (Wave heights included on top of swell in this measurement ) on the same day depending exactly where you are. You have lots of areas where it comes up from 60m to less than 30/20m and some of these are close land/rocky out crops. Then became of the power of the swell hitting the shore/rocky outcrops the waves/swell come back out to sea again causing a washing machine effect. Most of my trips start early so in the dark, sometimes pitch black here due to lots of clouds. Also most trips are heading into the waves on the way out in general. So usually can't go to quick and wouldn't want to. At this time of year we are starting to get whales around as well, and definitely wouldn't want to run into one aye. Had one pop up in front real close on the way back in last trip. It took me a sec to realise. I thought What the hell is that rock doing there. Luckily the rock dived. This trip I think I only did about 20-22kms in that 1hr 50 mins. If we fluke a real calm day I could nearly get to the shelf in that time which is aprox 50kms from the ramp .

18km if you beach launch haha. I've done the trip out from emu point before and reckon I'll stick to the beach, seems to really drag on just getting out of the sound. Worst thing is you're always going to head into the swell, either heading out or coming home. |

Yeah ok. A few years ago i took my boat down to Peaceful bay and endured the same sort of conditions. I only really went out cause i had dragged my boat down there so i thought i had better use it. It sounds like its the norm though. We did do alright out from Peaceful Bay and we were only travelling around 10nm but it was a slow trip either way. There were plenty of those sharp inclines and declines as well. |

Quite a bit quicker launch off the beach aye, but I'd struggle a bit retrieving on my own if the surge comes up. Plus I hate getting wet when its as cold as it is down here most of the time. Not quite that keen/mad anymore. If there was even just a floating jetty to tie up to I'd be there quite a bit I reckon. |

Went out this morning to catch some bait. Put the boat in around 9am. Walked back from car to boat and jumped in. Holy crap water coming in and above floorboards. 😲 Turn bilge pump on, jump out and race back to car. Reverse trailer at warp speed and winch boat back on. Parked on the steep part and let drain out. I Forgot bungs duh. Amazing how much water was in the boat for such a short time on the water. Anyway got it sorted and out I went, trying for squid. Wind was up but found some sheltered spots and tried and tried. Shifted a few times and drifted kms. Nothing so gave up and tried for fish. Four or five Rock Cods/Parrotfish things only. Had a big school of herring around but only got one. They just wouldn't bite. Moved around a bit more and rain came over, wind came up. So headed back to the ramp in a bit of choppy stuff. Once boat was on trailer wind stopped. Fark should've stayed home today. Nearly forgot had another boat come and fish so close in my berley trail I thought he wanted to fish from my boat. What a day.

After that woeful bait collecting session, I came home and had an early night but woke up around 8pm. So decided to go and hunt/catch some better fish. It was another dark night with only a tiny part of the moon around but mostly hidden behind dark clouds. So another slow trip in weather conditions worse than predicted of course, typical Albany. So two hrs later I stopped at a spot I wanted to try 60m coming up to 30m. Swell was around 2.6m-3.5m maybe slightly more every now and then. I thought I could hear a bit of a roaring noise but it was windy plus motor going and couldn't see anything. I deopped anchor and put a bait down. Instant good bite/run but missed it. Then the moon poked through and I looked up as that roar sounded close. Fark in front of me just about where anchor would be holding there was a big wall of white water/wave. The boat had passed over the bigcswell just before it turned into a wave. Fark panic stations for a minute. Couldn't go forward to retrieve anchor or would've been in the wave zone. Slapped boat in reverse and skull dragged anchor awaycfrom there. Phew too close, so moved out to deeper water and found a slightly safer spot. It didn't take long and the fish and sharks were on. Bust offs, bite offs, runs, etc. Inbetween landed two Dhu's one released a couple of gummy sharks and a longnose grey shark landed as well, also some Breaksea Cods, Queen Snapper, cuttlefish my bait, leather jackets,Port Jacksons etc. Man what a hotbite session which kept going till afer light and I decided I'd caught enough and headed in. On the way back in to King George Sound a Whale popped up right in front to say hello. An awesome ending to the trip.

Lucky the anchor didn't get stuck aye, would've hated trying to circle around in that situation. Think I would've just cut it if that had happened. The anchor actually got stuck at the next spot taking at least 15 mins of trying to get it off. Luckily I didn't need to rush. |

Yeah I love the Gummy Sharks to, actually eat a few different varieties of shark. Changing subject back to anchoring down here, its quite easy to get stuck because of the usual big swells . The rope swings around quite a lot, so if its not in good it comes out. Also it can cause the chain to get wrapped around stuff more easily. Back to the weather its common to change four or five times a day or night while out there so can be a bit of a challenge. Check out the difference on the Queen Snapper pics, one is facing the front of the boat and one facing the rear. Pics taken about a minute apart. Edited by SnappaDan, Jun 1 2016, 06:57 AM.

Headed out Tuesday morning just gone at first light. Forecast was for 2m swells and lightish winds. Good weather for Albany, the first reasonable day for a while. Once out of King George Sound I found the Swell travelling nearly opposite to the wind causing a few white caps and sloppy conditions. Headed towards a lump I knew of coming up from 60m to 30m aprox. Before I got there I noticed some shiny amooth patches of water which seemed strange. It ended up being extreme currents swirling around. Never seen it like that in this area before. Anyway I anchored up for a bit and got a bit confused. Instead of being blown in the direction of the wind I was facing the opposite to what would normally happen. The back of the boat faced into the wind instead of the bow while at anchor. My lines were drifting into the wind and waves and sinkers were coming to the surface. So went heavier with sinkers and started fishing . nothing for an hour or two so decided to pull anchor and try drifting. Anchor was stuck and took over 20mins of trying before finally getting it free. Dunked the nose under a few times with motor going in air before it was free. Anyway moved a few 100m and came down a swell, backed off at the wrong moment and a wave came up over the cabin and windscreen. Fark soaked through for the day. Anyway started my drifts and the fishing changed even though I was still drifting into the wind, weird aye. Breaksea Cods were everywhere and all good sizes, high 40s to 50cm+. Then a few Bight Redfish (Nannygui) with the biggest around 60cm plus a couple of Dhufish 50-51cm released. Also the usual parrotfish,Wrasse,Gurnards etc. So even though no monsters I ended up with a quality feed in the end. Quite happy finally after a rough start.

Wind against current days. confusing for all. I've seen line go forward of the boat before with current being strong. These days you need to go well ahead of your mark and drift in. Hard to judge, but imagine where that sinker is sitting relative to your boat. But i guess anchoring would be just as confusing. |

Headed out just before sunrise thurs morning, the 1st half decent day for a while. Headed out past Rock Dunder (aprox 23kms from ramp) and a bit futher. This is heading out of King George Sound to the left towards Two Peoples Bay area. Been out this way a few times now and always been a bit slower than heading the other way towards Denmark but usually still get a feed. Swell was around 2m and dropping supposedly with light varying wind. Winds were slightly stronger than expected making the drift a bit quick. It didn't take long for a couple of Bight Redfish to come on board plus a couple of Swallowtail Then it went very quiet for ages then I moved upwind of my mark and dropped a bait down. Straight away a 100m run then a bite off. This happened twice, so changed to wire and this time another run, just as quick but Slightly different fight. Ended up being a decent Sambo of over 110cm, I decidedly to keep it so bled it straight away and put it on ice.A few gurnards were caught and kept for bait but not much else till another short run and small shark came aboard dispatched and kept. After that dead quiet again so decided to head home early pm. Got a good lot of fillets anyway.

Headed out for an all nighter Thursday night from Albany. Swell around 2m and lightish winds forecast and cloudy conditions so reasonable conditions for here. Once out of King George sound the wind and chop was head on again, not terrible but slightly annoying short chop with a few white caps . anyway got to my location around 2hrs along the coast. There were fish showing straight away on the sounder and 1st drop a nice Swallowtail (similar to Red Bight fish but smaller) on a jig. A couple more then small pinkies undersize then Skippy started, then a Dhu came up barely hooked probably legal size but shook it loose at the side, thought I'd get a bigger one for sure. Just before sun down a couple of whales came over and put on a show by leaping in the air and splashing around. They hung around till after dark and even came up close in the pitch dark and blew off their air spouts scaring me just a bit. I think they were having fun. Anyway after dark all the table fish shut down and Port Jackson's and Rays came out, lots of them even though I moved spots it didn't change much. I did get two wobbygong sharks but released them, one might have had pups as was quite fat. Somewher during the night another berley pot disappeared just leaving a bit of rope.I had a big surface bait out under a balloon but that didn't get touched. My anchor rope rubbed through or snapped for some reason and lost that. In the morning the wind came up a bit and changed direction so I had to head back into a heavy choppy sea again. Getting annoyed with the South Coast weather. Haha can't wait for the next trip out.

Headed out early morning yesterday around 4.30am, woke the radio operator up to log on lol. Well they do say they operate 24hrs down here. Anyway headed out of King George Sound into open ocean and was greeted by 2-3m swells and occasionally a larger odd set. I tried a few different spots but found it very quiet and hard to get anything much at all. It was a 2deg morning with a slight chilly breeze and a 13deg max day so bloody freezing. On about my third move of locations I fished a spot that comes up from 60-70m to under 30m. I had to be careful where I drifted because every 10-20mins a wave/swell would break over a certain area but I wanted to be as close as possible. The sounder showed heaps of fish midwater and on the bottom. I tried a variety of methods but still slow going. I did get a few Breaksea Cods but small by normal Albany standards though still legal size. Also got a few undersize yellowtal Kingfish. Then I got a better hit on the bottom with a few decent thumps as it came up. Yehar a nice Dhufish of just over 60cm. As I hauled it in I noticed all the Albatross behind the boat all take off suddenly. Then my big line surface bait took off. Under the boat and 50m-100m run then splash, splash a Mako was leaping 2m-3m in the air. I put the boat in reverse and turned it around so fighting it from my side.It jumped three more times and just as I was trying to get my phone out to video it, it bit through 100lb wire. No wonder the fish wouldn't bite with that around. After that only got a few Skippy and more smallish Breaksea Cods most released. Heade home after lunch. Driving along at about 25kms surfing the swells back. All of a sudden something came flying up out the water and onto the bow and windscreen. Fark squid ink all over. Didn't think that could happen. Had to stop and clean it off. Some even ended up inside so just missing me. Anyway carried on and just as coming into the Sound near Bald Head surfing another swell at around 25kms again and just coming down the swell, a huge whale and calf surfaced right in front coming up the wave/swell. I slammed the boat into neutral and somehow the whales went underneath without colliding. Fark that was too close. As I'm writing this I made it back without anything else exciting happening

Good stuff dan. Those makos are pretty spectacular when they leap out of the water. I caught one a few years ago which did the same. |

Just a normal day out then. Good feed of fish, surfing dangerous swells and being attacked by squid and whales..... |

Headed out yesterday morning early with the intention of heading to one of my normsl spots. When I got into King George Sound I decided to delay going too far, at least till daylight as conditions weren't favoursble. So sheltered behind Michaelmas Island and started fishing. It didn't take long and a nice King George Whiting was landed then the Skippy showed up, all around 40cms and good scrappers on the light gear. Could've caught as many as wanted as non stop action the whole time. Got busted off by something much bigger a couple of times still on the light gear. Then missed another two runs on livies. Then it went quiet on the big stuff though the Skippy were still biting. Headed out further after daylight but no joy even trying multiple spots, besides a couple of Breaksea Cods so headed back in early afternoon. Next time for the biggies.

Headed out early yesterday morning with 3m swell forecast to be dropping. Found 3m-5m more common once in the open Albany ocean. Found fishing very quiet besides undersize pinkies and the odd Swallowtail plus a few wrasse, gurnards, scorpion fish etc. A queeny showed up but then things went real quiet. The wind .eased off a little during the day but swell stayed huge. About half hour before my designated home time the sounder lit up with fish and the runs and bites started. Two sambos on different rods made it intersting for a while but managed landing both of them, then a nice Nanny/ Bight Redfish, then a few more missed runs and bites. More fish appeared on the sounder right on the bottom but wind had come up again and would be head on for the majority of the way,so had to leave them biting. It was a hell of a bumpy trip home. Typical bloody Albany weather. Fricken over winter but at least I managed a feed. Kept the Sambos so got a heap of fillets. They look okay after being bled so should be alright. Looking forward to some calmer weather, surely we must be due some. At least I got blue skies in the afternoon for a change. The pics make the water look flat but it was far from it and got rougher on the way home.

Nice redfish, drifting or on the anchor? I havent been out in anything over 3m yet but coming down the face of a 3m is a bit hairy for me let alone 5m! Good stuff. |

I was at anchor when the fish really started to show up. In 60m of water and had nearly 100m of rope out. I had been drifting a lot of the time but stuff all results. The wind eased for a short period but the swell didn't so anchoring was still hairy. When the swell past you would get ripped forward at a fast rate of knots. Tough conditions that's for sure. I wouldn't have gone out that far but it was supposed to ease off a lot, but should've known better. It was the only day doable for a while though. You should see the weather down here today, gusting to 100kms. I can imagine the size of the swell out there today. |

I can picture how rough it is down there with currents/tides, big swells, big seas and then all the waves bouncing back off the rocks, put that together with leftover seas from the day before and it a recipe for a washing machine. Pretty much sounds like all your trips down there. At least you got out and caught some fish. |

Headed out yesterday at first light with the knowledge the swell was around 3.8m according to the forecast. In the sound it was quite flat and could cruise at a decent speed. Once around the corner of Bald Head it changed dramatically and was every bit as predicted. Anyway headed out to my chosen area and started trying. I found with the big swell it was hard to keep baits or jigs on the bottom. It was another slow day but released a 50cm Dhu early and a few small Pinkies. I tried drifting but the drift was too fast but did pick up two decent Breaksea Cods eventually being the only decent keepers for the day. Got a few Swallowtail but only small and the usual wrasse,Gurnards,Sargent Bakers etc. Anyway weather and swell predicted to start getting better soon with a couple of days next week looking good so far. Fingers crossed. |

Headed out early yesterday morning at first light, about 30kms from the ramp but still not far from land. It rained to start with but conditions weren't too bad for a change. Light winds and 2.5m swell occasionally larger. Things started pretty well with some good bites and a Queeny coming on board and a few Swallowtail. Then it went dead and just shut down. I moved a couple of times and ended up drifting over an areas I'd done well previously. One Breaksea only small released and one good Harlequin. I'd put out a Swallowtail as bait on a big line about 15m down and all of a sudden it took off. 100m screaming run at least. After a while it was on the surface splashing around and saw it was a Mako Shark of about 2.5m or so. As I got it closer to the boat two whales turned up and one came that close it nearly bumped the boat. It came between me and the shark and the other one was following/chasing the shark from the other side. I nearly thought it was a baby whale I'd hooked but 100% it was a Mako as I got a video of it briefly. Anyway the Mako bit me off just under the boat and took off. What an experience aye. In saying that the sounder showed something big back underneath again 15mins later and the fish remained shut down. I moved a km or so but was followed and still fish were shut down. Then I moved a lot further and scored another couple of Harlequin and decided to call it a day early pm. Another average Albany day. Oh and I did think of you Lefty lol😆😛

I appreciate the thought Dan. Been looking at boats for the last few weeks but haven't pulled the trigger on one yet. I'll just keep living vicariously through you for now... |
