Well I finally got a chance yesterday to take my new boat for its first fishing trip yesterday. It was a very late start for me this time, mid morning actually. I took my brother in law out who isn't well so it was just going to be out in Cockburn Sound for a few hours. The plan was to chase a Gummy Shark or two. So out we headed to an area that I've fished before that usually produces most trips. Anyway after a couple of hours of nothing besides one small Butterfish for my brother in law which was thrown back, 1st fish always gets put back for my Kiwi brother in law. No such rules for me on my boat but he's always done it on his. even making me throw back a Pinkie before lol. Anyway I was only fishing big so I could call my first fish a good one. After luch time we decided to head out past Garden Island towards Rottnest for a quick fish. It was blowing quite hard from the Northwest/westerly with a fair chop as well, but found it easy going with the new boat cruising along at a decent clip. Never again would I buy an aluminium boat, as this fibreglass was so much smoother. Fricken awesome. we arrived in one of my previous areas, way quicker than I thought it would take. Anchor down in 40+metres of water and lines in. A quick sandwich and coffee and we were relaxed and enjoying the day regardless. The winds started easing again and made for a pleasant afternoon even though still slightly humid. After a short while I got a screamer of a run on a unweighted bait, lots of head shakes and powerful runs. It went around the anchor rope two or three times so my brother in law tried pulling the rope up a bit so we could untangle it. It took too long and the fish managed to shake itself off the hook. Oh well missed the first run. Not long after this I got another good bite using herring for bait, it took a small run then lots of head shakes with a bit of weight. I guessed Dhu but didn't want to jinx myself, but up it came nice purple silver colour, yeharrr :) :) I yelled as it was slipped into the net. My first fish on my new boat what a way to christen it. I was stoked. No other quality fish was caught after this but there was a few crap fish and rays. port jacksons etc and one decent size skippy in the high forties, also a big heavy slow fish that kept on biting us off. Don't know what but big slow and powerful, maybe some sort of cod. Cruised back to ramp mid to late afternoon with a nice feed, a fillet each after a great day on the water. The start of a good year.

Headed out this morning at first light along the coast a bit. Conditions A bit sloppy to start with a few good hours in the middle and then sloppy again on the way back. It started slow at first with just a few Breaksea Cods and only small to start with. Eventually a legal Dhu came aboard and considered letting it go for a minute then decided to keep it. The action took a while to get going but soon Pinkies and Breaksea Cods started biting fairly consistantly for a while. Pinkies were all around 50cm-55cms and Breaksea Cods around 45cm-50cms. It didn't take long to get my 5 demersals to take home. Inbetween a couple of Swallowtail and Skippy were caught as well. So another good Southern fishing session I had. Got home earlier than expected to.

Headed out again this morning and was fishing by 6am. What an awesome morning with non stop action straight away and by 8.30am I had my limit for down here in Albany on demersals. I still could've targeted Bight Redfish but didn't want to because kept on getting other demersals and hard putting them back in deep water. Tried a Shark bait line out but only for an hour and decided to go home. One happy fisherman plus a storm front was forecast anyway.

There's a bloke that I meet at the mangles bay fishing comp this year and if you keep the contents of the queen snapper stomach he will actually buy it off you. Can't quite remember how he worked it but if you catch a few off them it would be worth it.

Headed out again today as forecast was for some good weather again. It was rough to start with, not the swell but short sharp waves with some wind. Quite a bit came over the back while drifting and putting motor into reverse to stop lines from drifting up. Luckily I had a bilge pump as wasn't paying attention for a while as getting a few bites. All of a sudden noticed water over the floorboards. Thought I had a problem but once pumped out it was fine. The fishing was slower than the other day but still got a good feed. Released a few 41cm-42cms Snapper and similar size Breaksea Cods hoping for the monsters. Got one good one plus a 55cm Dhu and aprox 80cm+ Queeny and Yellowyail Kinghy. Heaps of Kings around but not really taking anything. The weather actually came real good for a few hours, the best I've seen for a long time, but the chop came back up for my 2hr ride back to the ranp against me all the way. Typical Albany conditions but still really enjoyed the day out.

Dan did you want me to try and find this guys number? I know a few blokes at mangle bay fishing club who might be able to give it to me. Could be some easy money considering you catch quite a few.

A bit too far from here (Albany) to Mangles Bay to worry about. Yeah it's been good to have some reasonable weather for a change.

Moving back up, yeah Trav's partly on the money lol. Looking forward to being able to make a coffee and not spill it everywhere. Looking forward to getting back to all nighters and not freezing my backside off. Will be calling Mandurah my new stomping grounds for the next couple of years. Move over Mr Dulson

Me either lol, though a bit over Albany a good place for a holiday and that's sorta what it's been. Quite a dangerous coast that you can't get out in for many days of the year. Yeah fishings pretty good but not as good as I would've thought/expected considering the good grounds and lack of fisherman accessing them often. I'll miss the generous demersal limits but then again in the metro it's much easier to go out more regularly. A bit too far away from family as well.

Mandurah is good, just the shelf is a lot further out. So you have to venture much further for the 2nd bank, where is i like to fish for the bigguns.
Weekend tourist popular, so during the week should be empty ramps. Know people do well in close on snapper though. Good variety with estuary there too.

There was one fish I wanted to get before I leave Albany and that was a decent river mulloway. So yesterday evening headed down to the mariner to get some fresh bait. It took about an hour and a half to get 20+ baitfish, mostly yellowtail and a few herring. Then I headeded off to the river and set up around 9.00pm. Usually there are heaps of small bream that chew your baits up quick but this time they weren't chewing. They were around as I could see them in the torch light but not biting which I was glad of anyway so my big baits would last longer. 1st run came just after midnight and caught me by surprise and dropped it before I could strike. Then a couple of hours went by then two more runs, same thing droping the bait again. One I had on briefly for about 15seconds or so. Dam it was getting frustrating. Lucky 4th strike and hookup came around 3 30am aprox on a yellowtail bait on a flick rod. It gave me a few tense moments going for some snags and taking a decent amount of line then it wrapped around my other line to make it more challenging. After a few more runs it finally came in but still took three shots with the net as it dived out of reach, then finally it was in. Yehar I achieved what I'd set out to do. 💪

Kept it as it was stuffed especially by the time I managed to get a pic or two. I forgot my phone holder I use to prop my phone up while on self timer.Had to use a rag to hold the phone while sitting it on the esky and kept on falling over. I bled it so hopefully that helps with the taste. It weighed 8.6kgs/19lbs after bled and guttered.

Thought I'd try again overnight for the river Mulloway and had another okay night/morning with two landed. One kept because it swallowed the hook deep and one released. One was caught an hour after starting and the second in the early am. Mid 50s and 60cms sizes so a total of five landed over three trips and a few missed opportunities as well though last night was the quietest overall. I still had an enjoyable night and saw a few free swimming mulloway right at my feet on the odd occasion. Think I'm getting the hang of this Mulla river fishing.

I gave it another crack last night, actually started slightly earlier in the daylight this time. Got a couple of livies on the way to start with. Just a few herring and yellowtail. For some reason I grabbed my big boat rod set up as well 65lb braid etc. Just without thinking as usually use only the lighter gear in the river. Anyway decided to use it and lobbed it out with the biggest herring then set up a lighter outfit as well. About an hour later still well and truly daylight I went to the back of the car to do something and heard my heavy outfit scream off. This run was so fast it would put most ocean fish to shame. It went right to the other side even under hard drag pressure then turned and came back to my side nearly beaching then turned downstream and started to drag me toward the edge. Then bang 65lb braid snapped like a pistol going off. Fark Fark couldn't believe what just happened. Would've spooled me on anything else but still broke me off anyway. After this it was a very quiet night with only one size Mulloway eventually landed and released. Another quiet night in the southwest.

Dam and I'm leaving in a week, starting to wish I'd put more effort in earlier. A big Bull Shark would've been awesome. Tons of food up there for them, a billion small bream, plus trumpeters, mullet, prawns and mulloway.

Headed to an inlet last night chasing pink things for a change. The water was teaming with baitfish and didn't take long to have fresh baits out. Herring, whiting, bream, galore and tons of mullet jumping everywhere. Just as I went over to talk to another fisherman I got a real good run but missed it and that was the only run for the night. Bugger, dam, bugger, dam. Anyway moral of the story stay close to your lines. Gonna try again tonight but for the croakers again. Got plenty of fresh baits that should last all night. Got one mullet which I have high hopes to convert plus some small whiting and then the herring. It's getting real close to my last Albany session now as moving back on the weekend. Here mulla, mulla please be around tonight.

Last night started off slow I set two big lines and waited. It was nearly five hours till the first run which I missed. So I decided to hold the rod that went off to see if that might be a better way. I held it for about an hour then decided to have a coffee and you know it, another missed run. Typical aye anyway it went quiet for a while then Travis turned up somewhere around midnight. He'd been further upstream. His results were a couple of undersize fish and a few misses as well. Anyway we got talking and you guessed it got another run again missing it. This was the scene for most of the session until way after Trav left and on daylight finally managed three fish from three runs. Two were a bit undersize but one went 60cm and put up an alright fight for itself. Finally success after nearly giving up earlier in frustration. All fish were released and I went home happy.

Well last night was my last fishing trip from Albany while living here before moving back to Metro. Headed up a river again chasing the croakers (Mulloway) one more time. The usual small Bream were about in numbers and one or two size specimens. I got my first Mulla run just before 9pm a ripper of a run which I managed to get under control on 15lb braid. Just as I thought I had it, it charged towards a tree root and busted me off. Devastated dam, dam. The next run came around 3am aprox and another decent struggle on 15lb but I managed to keep it away from the snag this time. Yahoo another decent Mulloway to finish on a high from the river. Over and out Albany till holiday times.
