Well I finally got a chance yesterday to take my new boat for its first fishing trip yesterday. It was a very late start for me this time, mid morning actually. I took my brother in law out who isn't well so it was just going to be out in Cockburn Sound for a few hours. The plan was to chase a Gummy Shark or two. So out we headed to an area that I've fished before that usually produces most trips. Anyway after a couple of hours of nothing besides one small Butterfish for my brother in law which was thrown back, 1st fish always gets put back for my Kiwi brother in law. No such rules for me on my boat but he's always done it on his. even making me throw back a Pinkie before lol. Anyway I was only fishing big so I could call my first fish a good one. After luch time we decided to head out past Garden Island towards Rottnest for a quick fish. It was blowing quite hard from the Northwest/westerly with a fair chop as well, but found it easy going with the new boat cruising along at a decent clip. Never again would I buy an aluminium boat, as this fibreglass was so much smoother. Fricken awesome. we arrived in one of my previous areas, way quicker than I thought it would take. Anchor down in 40+metres of water and lines in. A quick sandwich and coffee and we were relaxed and enjoying the day regardless. The winds started easing again and made for a pleasant afternoon even though still slightly humid. After a short while I got a screamer of a run on a unweighted bait, lots of head shakes and powerful runs. It went around the anchor rope two or three times so my brother in law tried pulling the rope up a bit so we could untangle it. It took too long and the fish managed to shake itself off the hook. Oh well missed the first run. Not long after this I got another good bite using herring for bait, it took a small run then lots of head shakes with a bit of weight. I guessed Dhu but didn't want to jinx myself, but up it came nice purple silver colour, yeharrr I yelled as it was slipped into the net. My first fish on my new boat what a way to christen it. I was stoked. No other quality fish was caught after this but there was a few crap fish and rays. port jacksons etc and one decent size skippy in the high forties, also a big heavy slow fish that kept on biting us off. Don't know what but big slow and powerful, maybe some sort of cod. Cruised back to ramp mid to late afternoon with a nice feed, a fillet each after a great day on the water. The start of a good year.SnappaDan |

Well had my 1st attempt at a boat trip up here π. I sort of new I shouldn't have gone as by the time I loaded my boat I had more than the usual aches and pains. Took some pain killers andcheaded off anyway. Decided to lauch from Cockburn and head out towards Rotto. Wind was offshore so not bad in close. Once out past the islands it was a different story with a fair swell pumping from the southwest hitting the waves from the southeast so quite hairy in places. I still headed out 12-15kms but changed my mind on trying to fish those conditions. So came back in after a good soaking but decided to stop in the sound for a few hrs anyway. I caught my limit of Herring in 20mins easily and had livies out quickly. The sounder constantly showed bigger fish probably Salmon in the bait/Herring schools but not on the bite. I reckon at daylight they possibly would've come on the chew but not what I really wanted. I got the usual Ray, Fiddler and Port Jackson on the bottom but no sign of Pink things. Around 3.30am the wind dropped and there would've been a window of opportunity to head out again but I was too sore so called it quits and came home. I'll probably give it another go next weekend or sooner closer to my new stomping grounds. |

Yesterday was my first actual recon mission out from Dawesville. Headed out at 1st light and was greeted by a southwester of around 10knots-15knots fluctuating and a swell of about 1.5m and slightly more on occasions. Decided to head into it to make an easier ride on the way back. I went out around 15-20kms and started looking around. Nothing really stood out but eventually picked a spot and started drifting. Wind had eased slightly but only for a short time. First fish was a legal if caught in Albany Snapper haha so went back. After that it was slow going and all of a sudden I noticed a huge shadow shape coming towards the back of the boat. It was a monster close to the lenth of my boat or even bigger. Also it had some girth on it and some big nasty looking teeth. To me it looked bluish like a Mako but if it was it was the biggest I've ever seen. The weather had gone real overcast and grey like Albany weather at this point and even rained for a bit. Anyway I grabbed my camera phone ready to try for a pic as it came alongside. As it did I leaned towards it slightly and it half leapt and swirled with a big tail slap showering water everywhere. Ah,ah I missed the pic and it dived then swam under and around the boat and was gone. I didn't see it again. After this I shifted a few times mainly looking for new ground. I ended up with three undersize Dhus released and just a few wrasse etc. So mostly just an exploration trip. One thing I noticed was even though it ended up being a bit rough even with some waves being rollers and white water at times it was so much more predictable and consistent than Albany ever was. I virtually didn't get much water onboard. When in Albany I was using my bilge pump quite often just to clear spray and slop. Not sure if the fishings as good yet though. Lol. Headed out this morning with the aim of targeting a decent Dhufish. My thoughts were get out to 40m of water minimum depth and just get one. Winds were forecast around 10knots Northwest and 1.5m swell roughly. It was slightly more but not too bad just a bit bumpy on the way out. I ended up around 35kms+ out and found a spot and tried anchoring. It didn't hold but slowed me down and I was happy with that. It took a few hours of absolute nothing then I got a Scorpion fish . Yay a fish haha, then missed a big occie then next minute I was on to a better fish and a bit of thumping and weight as well. I guessed Dhu straight away and took it extra careful. Lucky I did because the hook came out and got caught on a small piece of skin about 1-2mm. Yehar my first legal Dhu on only my 2nd trip out. I was stoked and once landed decided to head in close and try for a Pinkie. No luck there but it didn't matter. I was happy.πI did get the usual 3 Rays and Fiddler before calling it quits. |

Finances are a bit tight at the moment so a 50-60kms one way is a bit much at the moment. Maybe with a deckie I would be in it sometime. Even straight out there looks like some good ground 50kms+ out, that I'd like to explore at a later date. |

Gonna be short and sweet with this report. Went fishing closer in than normal and fish were there. Boated three legal size Dhus kept One. Lost an even bigger one 3/4 the way up. Had a big fight with a shark as well and cut it off after nearly an hour as too knackered to carry on. Only wanted a pic but should've cut it off earlier. It really done my back in, gonna be sore for a while. Caught a few Pesky Rays,Banjos etc but worth wading my way through them and persevering. Starting to like Mandurah fishing. Yehar π |

Well fishing wise I supose I can't complain too much aye, getting the Dhu's pretty quickly. Could've caught more easily enough. Had to stop fishing. Just needed to find a big Pinky and it would've been perfect. Here's a pic of the other two Dhu's, I took a chance on releasing earlier. It can be a little hard to make that decision as could've come home with nothing. Edited by SnappaDan, May 9 2017, 09:38 AM.

Headed out last night for a bit of a storm fish, but in my boat for a Pinky session. Strange that there wasn't another boat at the ramp. Headed out into a West/Nor Wester which was fairly strong but doable if slightly crazy. Anyway found a spot and put out my anchor. Luckily I have an oversized anchor for my boat and it held me in position. Fishing was very slow but there were a few fish showing on the sounder. I managed to catch a few baitfish and settled down with livies out. The waves were smashing into the boat and dunking it a few times and waves rolling off the top. I closed the top canopy while anchored so was fairly protected from spray and water. Just before midnight I got my first run and only capture. It put up a bit of a different fight by coming up near the surface to fight nearly making me think a Salmon or even a shark. Yehar I was stoked when it was my target fish. I battled on for a few hours later with only one more decent missed run even though constant fish showings on the sounder. Eventualy I called it quits and headed in. I had to open up the top canopy to see in the way back in and boy oh boy did I cop a drenching from waves and spray. It was blowing a gale by the time I finally got back in. That's enough rough water for a while aye, even getting the boat back on the trailer at the ramp was a bit of a struggle. Let's just say I really earned that fish. Lol ππ² |

no fish for me off the beach. it was way too bright with a big moon overhead. I know of one caught about 6pm Saturday. this weekend looks very good. Moon is better for me too at 1/4 or less and better rise/set times. im off this weekend so I hope I can get permission from the committee to get a bit of time in. Dan ill also put my hand up for a deckie spot on less of a "if we go out its 50/50 wether we die or not" kinda trip. |

Haha Numbskull I had sorta forgotten about that that berley pot incident lol. It would be good to catch up sometime for a fish. I have a few family wanting trips out first but maybe after that sometime. Theres a slightly higher chance if you're available on a week day/night. Same, same Wookiee and I wouldn't have taken anyone else the other night unless they were certified crazy as well. |

Well after all that hyping up about doing an all nighter in amazing weather off we went. We left after dark and headed out to be met with a bit more of a swell and a slight chop but still good conditions. Dodged a heap of cray ropes and floats and headed out about 30kms or so. Weather just got better and better all night like a mill pond except for a bit of a swell. The calmest night I've been out in for ages. It started well with a couple of just over legal size Dhu's coming aboard and then released. Then it just slowed down for quality fish. More Rays, Port Jacksons, Banjo's, a few big bite offs etc. We got two more Dhu's also released which in hindsight we should've kept but didn't as still hoping for mr big. So in the end weather was awesome but fishing was average. Sunrise pic after a slight breeze has started.

Reckon you're right but had what I assume was a real big shark hanging around aprox 12-13m under the boat. It showed up nearly as soon as we stopped and wouldn't go away for long. We hooked it a few times overnight for a few seconds each time. |

πHeaded out late yesterday arvo for an all nighter. Headed out through the cut into bigger waves than expected again and didn't get better all night. Could only do 10-15kms hr but we didnt go far, maybe 7-8kms to a spot I marked previously while heading out. Set anchor nearly dunking nose of boat regularly but started fishing. Got 1st run within 45mins but missed it. Sounder showed fish regularly all night and eventually we started landing them. Berley from the decky worked a treat. His worst and best night all in one so not much complaining. Got our limit by early morning of Herring and Pinkies and left them biting. Could've caught plenty more but original North Westers changed to South East rolling waves meeting North wester/South Wester constantly changing swell making it hairy out there. So came in earlier than expected but happy. Heaps of bicatch of Rays/Port Jacksons again a bit of a pain but part of the experience.

Thought I'd better throw a line in again, its been a while aye. Can't let Trav have all the glory lol. Decide to hit up a local beach to me first time to actually fish it since moving here. Took my brother in law again to get him out of the house as well. We picked a spot just before sunset and set up.caught a couple of fresh baits and settled in for the night. Around 10ish the action started with good bites and a few runs. A few missed one dropped after 100m run or further with a straightened hook. A heap of big Port Jacksons then all of a sudden a familar bang, bang head shakes and I said aloud Pinkee and hell yeah I was right. A few nervous moments washing it up the drop off then hi 5s and yahooing. It didn't take long for me to replicate it with a slightly bigger 80cm model. Yeahar mojo for me well and truly back, but poor brother in law couldn't get one. We gave it a couple more hours but after another big Ray hookup we called it quits. |

Headed out overnight for another beach fishing session, ah starting to like sand beneath my toes again. Started with a nice over 50cm Tailor for my 1st fish. Can't complain with that aye. After that it was real slow with just crabs/pickers taking the baits. It was a nice calm night for a change so real relaxing anyway. After a while I got a decent hit and a small run and a bit of thumping going on. A nice 70cm+ Mulloway was landed, yehar that'll do me nicely. A bit later a big Port Jackson kept things ticking over. Then another few hours went by and another run and similar fight and size to the 1st Mulloway, so number 2 Mulla landed. Thank you very much this beach fishing is getting good. So packed up and headed home satisfied this trip. π

You wouldn't hardly believe it but this was my 1st actual beach fishing session in this area for over 20 yrs. Hadn't tried off the beach since moving here only the rocks/cuts a couple of times plus out in the boat of coarse. Really enjoying the sand underfoot for a change. The same principles of finding structure and or gutters apply then persevering and believing something will eventually show up. |

That snapper was it from that spot and currents and swell increased even though the wind dropped off. We increasingly got snagged as baits were dragged onto reef so moved locations about 10kms to a slightly calmer spot. Easier to fish but nothing till around 2am and Mitch my son inlaw got a nice Gummy Shark and thaat was it for us. I didn't get anything but was stoked for my son inlaw especially as it was his 1st beach caught Pinky. The Gummy was a bonus to. He went home around 5am and I stayed till 7.30am to see if my luck improved without him around but nah not this time. Then I broke my door handle so can't open from the outside and then after that one of my headlights blew as well so a jinx night for me.

Finally got a chance yesterday/Saturday to head out to one of my old haunts. Haven't fished there for well over 2yrs but seeing there's a demersal ban and snapper ban on at the moment I wondered if my Gummy shark area would still fire. Headed out around 7am and went out a whole 10-15minutes from the ramp in perfect conditions. It was so calm and smooth I didn't need to anchor for the first couple of hours. Ah feel all the stresses of recent times wash away. I set the lines out and waited. It didn't take to long before my old friends mr Ray, Black and Grey, Mr Fiddler and Mr Eagle Ray all turned up at various times during the morning/day. Most importantly Gummy and family showed up inbetween all the other guests. I ended up with three to take home for a feed and released some others. All over the metre mark, not overly fat but still reasonable size. Awesome quality fishing so close to shore in the Metro area.

Headed out again this morning on the water at my spot around 7.30am targeting Gummies.Didn't have to wait long and they were on, one of the hottest sessions for a while. Gummies and Long Nose Grey Sharks. I landed 9 before lunch time plus a couple of bite off and a few missed runs and 3 Eagle Rays as well. Kept 3 for tucker and released the rest. It still amazes me how well the Metro still fishes, you should have seen the schools under me on the sounder. There was baitfish galore going past showing on the sounder about every 20mins and you could see multiple bigger shapes following them. I was expecting big Bruce to show up especially as the ones I kept were bled in a 20l bucket and fins guts and head were tipped back in. Then I had my own berley mix as well more fish scraps and pellet and Tuna oil mix. |

Never tried my dog on the backbone.I usually throw it back as berley next trip out. Had 3 big bags this last trip and still couldn't bring much around, though I did drive over a big baitball that had quite a few bigger fish/sharks around. They just weren't hungry for our offerings this time. At least I know they're still in the area though. In saying that think I'll leave them alone for a bit, next trip will be demersssaaalllssss. |

Headed out today for a few hours after finally deciding to brave the strong Easterlies then Southwesters later on. Decided to target Dhus to start with so headed a fair way out in mild to rough choppy conditions. Didn't take too long once at my spot and a mid fiftties Dhu came on board. Eyes were a bit bulged but decided to release it on the release weight anyway. About three to four minutes later it popped back up so kept it. Headed back in closer around reefy area with craypots everywhere. Fished a few more hours for not much even though an occasional bigger fish was showing on the sounder. Decided to call it quits when the Southwester started to ramp up, but just as I was about to pull my line in it screamed off. Short story an hour and a half later still going. Had to pull my other line in plus anchor on my own to fight this shark. I chased it around and around and around bringing it close many times but not quite close enough to get a proper pic. If someone else was on board would've got some good shots but due to how rough it was I couldn't get the shot I wanted. Got a couple at a distance but that was the best I could manage. Ended up busting it off as conditions got hairy with a few waves rolling quite big. Camera seems to flatten the water pics to.

Headed out last weekend late nighter early morning trip. Tried the Sound since the ban was over. Even though others got big Pinkies all I found were undersized models some only just. Plenty about but decided to head out near Rotto for a Dhu.Found a few but same scenario all just undersized. Inbetween got bitten off a few times, landed the normal Rays and rubbish fish. Then got a bit of a surprise wihen I pulled a size crayfish then again another bigger one a bit later. Also tried for small fish and herring were everywhere from the Sound and out in 40m+ as well. Got a few Wrasee and a nice cuttlefish for bait as well. Possibly would've got a bigger Dhu at my location but one real big shark kept hanging around. Scared me a couple of times as it sort of raced close past the boat in the dark making the water swirl a bit. Had to go in a bit earlier than I would've like due to other commitments but enjoyed the trip anyway.

Headed out from Dawesville Mandurah yesterday real early. It was pitch black as the moon had gone down. Also it was a bit choppy/sloppy to start with but calming down real quickly. Headed out 6-7kms to start with dodging the minefields of craypots. Put the anchor down and by the time it held was right on top of craypots, dam too close. Moved a bit and tried again, bugger same result more dam pots that I hadn't seen. Anyway 3rd time lucky I could start getting some baitfish. Of course the big line was out to but stayed fairly quiet for a bit then a few undersize Pinkies plagued me. On the small lines the Herring and Skippy were also in huge numbers.Could've caught a 100 of each no problems but only kept 4xHerring and 8xSkippy for bait. Also the small Pinkies were fun on the flick rod for a bit. By this time the water calmed off to nearly pond conditions so decided to head out a fair bit futher. Still a slow trip as pitch black just starting to get slightly light. Eventually got to my location and started to fish. No drift anchor needed as very minimal drift. It didn't take long and first Dhu and Snapper came on board just under size. The release weight was used a few more times after as well with just on or undersize fish. All the activity started straight away then slowed pretty quickly. Then in quick succession a better Dhu and Snapper, keepers came on board yehar I had my feed. I stayed a bit longer and tried for a Shark surface to midwater fishing but only got one run or should I say two? Both lines screamed off together. Same fish I think possibly, both got bitten off in under a minute and that was it. Came home in ideal conditions no bouncing or banging into any waves. A good day βΊ

Great weather to get out. Was watching the wind readings from my desk and resisted every urge to ditch. Plenty of action for you Dan. Very productive spots. |

Went out for another all nighter, the main aim to be there at 1st light and not have to dodge the craypots in the dark. My goal was a big Dhu and go easy on any small ones to release them. Got to my location just before complete darkness and cast out. I felt a decent bite tug fairly quickly and started to pull it up. I took my time as I wanted to release anything under 50cm-60cm.As I looked down I spotted orange and realised it was a big Crayfish again. It actually let go within a second or two of me being able to net it. Bummerπ.After that the action came on steady with Shark runs, Ray hook ups,Port Jackson's a few Dhufish mostly just undersized and before morning three over size but still released hoping for the mummy or daddy Dhu. I actually moved a couple of times trying to get away from Big Sharks and Rays but they were everywhere. No berley needed or used. Also had another couple of missed Crays as well proving they do take your line more frequently than realised.Had a few hours sleep then persevered again and got a real decent bite run and thumping plus heavy weight. After five minutes it was nearly up and I could just see silver coming up. My target size, I was just starting to get excited and imagining brag story and it went slack........Dammmmm it just came off and slowly swam back down. This shut most of the bites off and it went quiet for a long period of time. Eventually got another bite with some thumps but not as heavy so pulled up very slow and another Crayfish came up. Yehar this one made it to the net.after this one more smaller Hammerhead on my biggest outfit and bait. It was tiny haha. Then another run on my other rod and pulled in a Whiskery Shatk I think or near relative of about 1.3m or so. I decided had enough of bottom fishing so went for a troll for about 3hrs but got zilch so finished up. Oh nearly forgot the big Wobbygong caught during the nigh humungous and heavy at least 6ft heading towards 8ft at a guess. Another typical night/morning.

40m Lefty this time and out from Dawesville, last time was also a similar depth but out behind Garden Island. Yeah I'm over the big Sharks definitely as well. I don't mind the medium ones but the big suckers are scaring the real fish and taking too many of my rigs plus the big Rays as well. Had a couple with twin barbs and long tails. No way was I getting those rigs back either. |
