Well I finally got a chance yesterday to take my new boat for its first fishing trip yesterday. It was a very late start for me this time, mid morning actually. I took my brother in law out who isn't well so it was just going to be out in Cockburn Sound for a few hours. The plan was to chase a Gummy Shark or two. So out we headed to an area that I've fished before that usually produces most trips. Anyway after a couple of hours of nothing besides one small Butterfish for my brother in law which was thrown back, 1st fish always gets put back for my Kiwi brother in law. No such rules for me on my boat but he's always done it on his. even making me throw back a Pinkie before lol. Anyway I was only fishing big so I could call my first fish a good one. After luch time we decided to head out past Garden Island towards Rottnest for a quick fish. It was blowing quite hard from the Northwest/westerly with a fair chop as well, but found it easy going with the new boat cruising along at a decent clip. Never again would I buy an aluminium boat, as this fibreglass was so much smoother. Fricken awesome. we arrived in one of my previous areas, way quicker than I thought it would take. Anchor down in 40+metres of water and lines in. A quick sandwich and coffee and we were relaxed and enjoying the day regardless. The winds started easing again and made for a pleasant afternoon even though still slightly humid. After a short while I got a screamer of a run on a unweighted bait, lots of head shakes and powerful runs. It went around the anchor rope two or three times so my brother in law tried pulling the rope up a bit so we could untangle it. It took too long and the fish managed to shake itself off the hook. Oh well missed the first run. Not long after this I got another good bite using herring for bait, it took a small run then lots of head shakes with a bit of weight. I guessed Dhu but didn't want to jinx myself, but up it came nice purple silver colour, yeharrr :) :) I yelled as it was slipped into the net. My first fish on my new boat what a way to christen it. I was stoked. No other quality fish was caught after this but there was a few crap fish and rays. port jacksons etc and one decent size skippy in the high forties, also a big heavy slow fish that kept on biting us off. Don't know what but big slow and powerful, maybe some sort of cod. Cruised back to ramp mid to late afternoon with a nice feed, a fillet each after a great day on the water. The start of a good year.

So what does everyone reckon about Wed night/thurs morning? It looks good but 20% chance of rain plus on the news they said a chance of a storm over the eastern suburbs/hills. Got caught last week in that unpredicted storm and that wasn't pleasant. Caught mostly baitfish Snook tailor and occie and a Wobbygong.

Ended up heading out late afternoon yesterday for another session out from Dawesville. Decided to concentrate on shallow water fishing so 10m and under.I tried an hour or two trolling with not a touch but was looking for new ground to fish. Eventually I found a nice reef strucure that looked promising so shallow I could see a lot of the reef. 1st cast a legal size Pinky came aboard within a minute or two. Unbelievable aye so took a quick pic and sent it on its way. 2nd cast and another decent bite and a few short runs and a legal Dhu came aboard. It fought pretty good in the shallow water to. A bit of a Dilemma should I keep it or try for bigger. Decided to keep it as thought the probability of a bigger one in the shallow would be rare. I thought there'd be more chance of Pinkies and I was right except the rest were undersized specimens 3rd cast and a Breaksea Cod was caught and released. After that it went quiet for a few hours then eventually I started to get a few more runs and fish. Rays,Port Jacksons, a couple of Sharks and a Samson fish as well. Heaps of Herring around as usual and some Snook. Only kept a few for bait. Also got another size Dhu but released that as well. Called it quits early am after a not so bad trip.

Headed out again last night with my son inlaw. Stayed in close to start with. Mitch got a nice Samson straight away and both got a couple of Rays.We concentrated on getting a few baitfish of Snook an Herring. After a couple of hours we had enough. They were good fun on the light gear and were in plague numbers. We headed out 35kms or more in the dark and set up.we hooked so many Rays it was a joke plus we hooked a few real good decent size proper fish monsters and would get them half way to 90% of the way up and they increased in size and took off. We couldn't get much past the Sharks, even some of the big Rays got eaten. We had so many bite offs it was insane even after moving a couple of times. Eventually Mitch stayed connectected to fairly decent Tiger Shark and after a good battle with both taking turns we decided to get it aboard for a pic. Crazy idea even for me you should've seen it. Two blokes grabbing it's tail and trying to haul it in. It exhausted us but we got it in took our pics and got it back reasonably quick to swim off okay. Then a bit later we did it all again with another slightly smaller specimen. Mannn we were knackered. So no demersals lande but a memorable trip. One hook up went around the anchor rope and cut it 3/4 through so needs to be replaced. Got back to ramp and some hoons had been doing donuts/ burnouts around my car and trailer so close but luckily not hitting anything. Then found my winch strap had been cut 3/4 through so would break when pulling boat onto trailer. Luckily I spotted it and managed to put trailer in deep enough to float the boat onto the trailer. What a trip.

Not wrong on the amount of sharks around it was insane. We actually were closer to 40kms out after a couple of moves, and everytime we stopped virtually within 1-5mins there was a mark/symbol on the sounder showing one or more anything from 6-15m under the boat. Occasionally even as close as 2m under us. I actually reckon there were bigger ones again as even some big Stingrays got eaten plus any demersals we hooked. I've never experienced it as bad as this trip. In saying all that it was a bit of a buzz. I'm slightly curious about how a Tiger Shark would taste as the second one was close to a keeper. (Borderline maximum size) I couldn't remember if the 70cm measurement was from the front of the dorsal or the back. Still haven't checked yet but we didn't keep it anyway. My back and shoulders are still struggling to recover from all the hookups etc.

You expect that type of taxing from up north but not down here.

Shark is Shark in my book for the plate.
OK if bled/finned properly.

I put the Black tips through the dehydrator for dog treats.
Fortunately I still have better fillets so I don't need to eat them but feel free to knock over a few hundred or so....

Headed out for an all nighter on the weekend Fri night/arvo Sat morning. It was awesome conditions on the way out and started fishing in the 30m area.Tried drifting for demersals but no bites at all. It was dead as anything. Eventually headed out into the 40s and started again. Same results nothing while drifting so ended up anchoring and berley was deployed. Still nothing biting on the big baits but by this time it was dark and I noticed heaps of herring on the surface, so played around with them on the flick rod while waiting. Eventually the Rays car bonnet sizes showed up about seven plus two Eagle Rays a few Pjs and a Shovelnose, a couple of scorpion fish and three bite offs but no demersals at all again. Early morning the Easterlies blew up and made it uncomfortable and I nearly went home but it would've been a wet ride so stayed till after light. Then in quick succession I landed a couple of big Crayfish. Yehar trip saved. Tried for a bit longer but still no Demersals so headed home into the still strong Easterlies. Jeez I hate those winds.

Well I'm over Ray City/Central, they've moved in everywhere I go lately. Tried an overnighter at my beach location and caught more than Ever before at this spot. Eagle Rays and Big Black Rays all night, Fark I'm knackered and annoyed. Probably could've caught Herring if wanted as could feel a few pickers and did miss a few proper bites so there is still a glimmer of light/hope left.

I've started only taking heavy gear for night session now.
100Lb rods, 10000 size reels.
Same reason, Rays, Fiddlers, Sharks ect.
Get it over quickly.

Decided I'd hit one of my Gummy Shark spots yesterday as haven't been there for a while. Got to the ramp mid afternoon to awesome conditions. Water was as flat as a pancake.Got about 200 metres and my motor died. Spent a few minutes trying to get it going and realised the connection to the fuel tank had stuffed up and was sucking in air and losing fuel. After a bit of playing around Pumping it up etc managed to sort of get it to run a bit. 15-20 metres from the ramp it died but had enough momentum to get it to the jetty. Put boat on trailer and headed to nearest shop and bought a new $5 part and started again. Got out there slightly later but still awesome conditions. Within an hour got my 1st Ray plus a decent Gummy Shark as well. Yehar they're still here. Missed a few more as they are vere spooky and drop baits quickly. Once it got dark the sounder showed constant signs of more and got another couple easily. Released a couple more and left them biting. Tried briefly at another spot for Pinkies but decided to go home early instead happy with my Gummy success.

Well I went out twice over the stormy weather just past. Came up from Wannanup / Mandurah to the Sound. First time it was blowing 20-28knots and swell was 3m+. Smashed my way out till I got to a slightly sheltered spot.Went to get my gear out and realised I'd left my tacklebox home. Faarrrkkk what an idiot, anyway had a rig on with no sinker so tried that but found that with the huge swell about there also was a strong current so bait wouldn't go down. Tried for an hour or so but it was no good. So headed back in getting smash by rhe big waves then surfed them back in taking bit of crazy courage. Drove home and called it quits as didn't fancy facing those waves again especially in the dark.Headed back late the next afternoon only 2.5m swell and 20knots wind aprox aand some rain. Stayed all night till nearly mid morning where it actually calmed right down but still the pinkies eluded me. Just got some Herring (no shortage of them ) and a Ray and a couple of missed touches/short runs.Gave up and went home then get a text from my son inlaw who went down to the Mole and about 15 seconds after casting he was on. 82cm of glorious Pink. Not jealous at all haha lucky bugger aye.

Took a mate out last night/afternoon and said I could nearly guarantee that we'd get some Gummy Shark action. Well it happened and he got to watch me catch some but no matter what we tried he didn't get one
Even when I stopped fishing and let him use my rods as well as his own.Sometimes fishing is weird aye.I ended up with two Gummies and a Long Nose Grey and multiple Rays and my mate got more Rays again. We also tried for Pinkies at a different spot for a few hours as well but they alluded us again but still happy overal with the Shark catch. The conditions were way better than my last couple of trips and could pour a coffee without spilling it.

Went out again for an all nighter last night/morning again. Started looking for Pink things but not a sign for me again. It was an extremely cold night but bearable and luckily the rain stayed away. Heaps of Herring showing around my boat but didn't bother with them as already had enough from last trip and had brought them along for bait. After a couple of hours I changed location to look for a Gummy Shark instead. Came across a big baitball with promising looking marks on the sounder. Within five minutes of dropping a bait down and it was on. Gummy after Gummy and it became the hottest session I'd ever had. Had my one day limit in no time and released a heap inbetween waiting for midnight and starting on day two limit. The Gummies stayed the whole time and even when I eventually left the water was virtually boiling with them.Went down to using my flick rod and boy was that fun before I headed in. One strange fact was I don't think I got one female, they were all male Gummies. So no Pink things again but who cares. Think I'll have a break for a few days or so.

Can't give exact depth/spot away but very close to a well known Pinky spot with a pinacle. As to leaving my car at the ramp I'm a member of Cockburn Power Boat club. Before being a member I still parked overnight many times at the public ramp with no trouble myself but did see broken glass from others not so lucky. I park at various ramps all night even in Mandurah/Dawesville . I've had my winch strap cut once recently at Dawesville and my window forced open plus someone did donuts / burnouts around my car and trailer. I use a steering lock as an extra deterrent and take the risk. Don't leave anything in the car.

Ezi I've been getting plenty fishing the drop offs from shallow to deep water in the sound.
They're thick at the moment.
1st 2 hours of dark have been the best.
I've been putting in a Palm beach and the car has been OK (touch wood).

Rig heavy.
You will need to sort through the rays/banjo's.

I've been using a size 6 bean sinker above the swivel to 60lb leader and 6/0 circle hook.
I keep the sinker just off the bottom to let the bait (normally squid) waft around.
Keeps the line straight up/down so you can use multiple lines without too many tangles.

How do you rig up Danny?

I use a 7/0 snelled circle hook (5/0-7/0 all good) and as little weight as I can get away with. My biggest tip is let them run a few metres before striking or lifting the rod. They drop the bait pretty quickly if they feel too much pressure. Now if it's a Snapper run strike immediately. Good luck and you will get Rays as well so light gear is risky fun.

Well ended up heading out mid arvo for my all nighter session from Dawesville . I chose to fish a inshore reefy area to start with. The waters were smooth as anything with a smallish swell but still occasionally breaking on shallow reefs nearby. It didn't take long for small fish to show up with herring being the quickest to the bait mostly. Could see yellowtail, Snook, Gardies and even tailor. Got my limit of Herring quickly and four tailor and stopped fishing small.Tailor fillets went straight back out as big baits. Before it got Dark I missed two runs and got bricked Snagged once on a good fish. Then another good run with heaps of thumping, boy do they go better in shallow water up came a mid 60cm Dhu Yehar success. As it went dark the swell increased slightly and I started hearing breaking waves closer and closer so moved out to a deeper spot. Herring surrounded the boat again but I didn't fish for them. The usual Rays and Port Jackson's came and went and eventually a nice Gummy Shark showed up. After that it went quiet so moved again. Found a new spot to me with a nice small reef but there was a cray pot right on it.I could see fish on the sounder though so moved about 100m away and started to berley. It didnt take too long and I got sporadic action on Pink Snapper for the night and through till daylight 60cm-90cm+ sizes. A couple more of the crap fish/Rays and it was an action filled trip. Headed home just after 1st light passing many boats just heading out. Back home the biggest Snapper I caught was a bit over 90cm and the fattest deepest body for its size went 9.99kgs. I've previously had 98cm ones that only just made 9kgs so this was a pb weight wise for me.

Had a day out on a mates boat today a beautiful day on the water gentleman hours (Daylight) for a change. Fishing was fairly slow but I got a 54cm Snapper and 48cm one released and a 49cm Dhufish. Lost a big Dhu I think thats what it was to being Sharked/taxed. Mate and son boated a couple of just undersized Dhufish and one good 50cm aprox King George Whiting. A few wrasse, etc and a Ray for me.That was our day.

Kept my reputation and name intact with the biggest Pinky landed though small by normal catches. Yeah it was a good catch up with mates who haven't fished together for a long time. I think they all sort of were a bit jealous when I hooked the bigger supposedly Dhu and had it 3/4 the way up. Then I reckon a few silent sniggers/laughs when it got sharked. Enjoyed the day heaps but still prefer my all nighter sessions for serious fishing. On a side note their boat was a trailcraft centre console 5.8m so a similar hull to what my brother inlaw had except his was the cuddy cab 6m and I hated the ride and jarring in the cuddy cab. With the centre console being further back it was a lot better ride though not as good as fibreglass of course.

Did you at least keep dry in the Center Console?
They can be very wet boats.
Actually didn't get wet at all but must admit it was fairly smooth conditions so no so sure how it would be on the rough days.I still wouldn't have one myself but definitely it surprised me compared to my brother inlaws cuddy. We drove the centre console at 55kms an hour cruising and don't think we ever did that with the cuddy cab in any conditions even though capable of it. Would've jarred us too much.

Took my brother inlaw out last night to get into a few Gummy Sharks.Had to wait a couple of hours for them to show up but once they did the sounder was showing 20-30 at a time going past. I got a couple fairly quickly then my brother inlaw got one then it went quiet though they were still around. Eventually I got number three inbetween mr Ray and mates. I stopped fishing for a couple of hours so the brother inlaw could try and catch up. Let him fish both sides of the boat to better his chances.Eventually he got a second and even though sounder showed more we moved to target Pink things. We fished another few hours till nearly frozen without a Pinky hit so headed home content anyway.

Haha yep I eat them and like them. The way I look at it is the less money spent on my meat food bill means more I can spend on boat fuel lol.

Headed out last night with one aim and that was to catch a Pink Snapper for my brother inlaw. He has been crook for the last few years with cancer and it's a struggle for him to just go fishing. So even getting him out last trip in the Sound chading the Gummy Sharks was a big event. The thing is he's never caught a legal Snapper even though over the years he's owned 3 boats but had to give the last one up a few years back due to health. He's caught most other fish including Dhu's but the Pinkies eluded him. Well I'm happy to say we ticked it off his bucket list last night with a nice 73cm model Pinky. It gave a good account for itself in shallow water with a few good runs and thumping before being subdued and netted. Hi 5s and yahooing all round what an experience. A bit later he got a 49.9cm/50cm Dhu which got released.Herring were thick as usual and I got my 12 in about 5-6mins and stopped. Could've caught hundreds as water was thick with them all night. Caught a few squid as well that kept hanging around. I never caught/landed a demersal ovenight but missed a couple of good hits. Called it quits early morning and got a visit/check by fisheries waiting for us at the ramp, All good. so overall one of the more memorable trips and one extremely happy brother inlaw. No shit fish either like Rays, Pj's etc.
