As mentioned in my absence apology post, I haven't been out much for months (which is very ironic since I run a South WA Outdoors forum LOL!)

Here's the report.... and some pics - the soapie was a nice surprise:

FINALLY! With the Dockers / Crows AFL match on today virtually down the road from us, a hasty retreat was in order - down to Albany for a day’s Kayaking after a far too long break of 15 months!

Gear ready (or so I thought) the day before a leisurely rise saw us departing at around 08:30 am for a quick stop at @trailblazers for some gear and bait and we arrived at the Kalgan Ski Club beach for a kayak shake down and some bream fishing.

It was at this point that I'd discovered that I'd left one of the Mirage Drives at home - DOH!

Sandra (my wife) graciously volunteered to paddle rather than peddle, but it was soon obvious after we had both kayaks set up and heading off that her rowing "technique" wouldn't match my peddling, so I suggested we swap and I'd do the paddling.

We had planned on heading up to the Oyster Harbour inlet and try the flats, but a Ski boat in action and fair wind down the river saw us head upstream.

There are times when I wondered if we could have saved a lot of money by buying a paddle kayak, but after today, and a day of paddling, rather than peddling, I'm now convinced the money was worth it. Though I detest Hobey (it's a long storey!)

The day was spent catching an abundance of small bream, then finally Sandra landed a good fish, followed by something she didn't recognise - turned out to be a mull soapy.

Finally a got hit hard and landed a decent bream myself.

Back down stream returning to the ski beach was a mission paddling against the wind - but 1.5 kilometres and 27 minutes later we made it back.

Great to be back on the water again - especially with the kayaks.

You're not wrong Dan - mate of mine (not a member of any forum and not on FB) said he saw bream as big as Pinkies in a "spot not far from Albany" (I was sworn to secrecy :P )
Kind Regards
