Forecast last Sunday was meant to be good. John & I met at his house and we were steaming out from Mandurah at 0600. It turned out to be quite lumpy but still fishable. One thing was for sure - it was freezing.

Anyway, the idea was to drift past John's mark over the FFB and pick up some snappers. I took my micro jig outfit - (Gomoku PE0.4-1.0 + Shimano Complex Ci4 S2500F6 retrofited with stradic ci4+ spool )and started jigging. When I tried to set the drag then I realise something wasn't right. No matter how many times I turn the drag knob, line was still coming out at fairly light wrist pull. So I took out the drag knob and examined the spool assembly & shaft. Alas! The line was spinning around the spool arbor!! Apparently, I tied the braid straight onto the spool without any backing so the entire 200M of PE1.5 line spun around the spool. I was suppose to test out this new 4 ply Line system braid but i guess that's for another time.

Now to light jigging outfit. It was quiet the first 35min or so until John picked up his first goat fish on a microjig. Then I started casting out my jig and working it back to the boat. Before long, I had a hook up. By the looks of it, it was a rat sambo. The school literally followed the hooked fish to the boat. Then it was sambo after sambo. After catching a few on my Light jig outfit, I thought I wanna try out something else.

Out came my giant snakehead/sebarau/peacock bass baitcasting outfit which had been in cold storage for a decade or so. This 6" GLoomis GL3 8-12lb + Daiwa Alpha 103L was my go to outfit for close quarter combat in the timber laden dams of Peninsula Malaysia. I started trying out some vibe and it didn't take long for the sambo to commit. I also noticed whenever vibe was used, the hook was deeper down the throat closer to if not onto the gill rakers, despite being retrofitted with 2 x singles. The happened to 2 of the sambos caught. So I swapped onto a feathered jighead of 1 Oz weight. This was bought in Brisbane some 3 years ago but never had a chance to use it proper. Again it didn't take long for the sambo to cooperate. My GL3 bent into a nice curve, reminiscent of the good old toman hunting days. Once landed, i noticed the hook hole was a lot bigger, doing more damage to the fish though near the jaw area. I presumed the super fast action crank bait rod with no give caused this damage.

The rat school stayed for while before everything started quieting down. John moved the boat to the low 30M+ again with little to show. When we moved back to a 17m spot John started trying the zman jerkshad in radioactive chook colour. I noted he rigged the placcie wrong way up, with the stomach slit facing the top and hook coming out that way instead of the opposite. Just after 2nd cast he hooked something substantial that took some line but it ended it tears because the leader knot unravelled. So who says you gotta rig the jerkshad the rightway to catch a fish ??

Since my micro & light jigs weren't getting any interest I tied on to a placcie too of 1/4oz jighead. I cast it out let the placcie fluttered to the bottom. With a bit of current raging, I had to keep feeding the line until the jighead truly hit the seafloor. I only had to do a couple of twitches before my GL3 loaded up again. This time round it was a 40cm pinky, 10cm short of legal so off he went back into the drink.

That pretty much summed up our trip. I will be back next time with the same reel but a softer tipped rod - MajorCraft Slicer 6"3 8-14lb. Hopefully the softer action of the rod with more cushioning will result in smaller hook hole in the fish mouth. I would also try out some sinking minnows & stickbait for a bit of variety.

Stay tuned.
