G'day all,
My mate has recently brought a 4.5m centre console with 40hp on the back and is keen to get out and about. I have done some research (on the net and navionics) and found a bunch of generic GPS points around Perth and surrounds and will give them a crack in due time to work out how to use the sounder and what not (probably not a heap there but good learning curve I guess). Going to start out in the sound though until he is comfortable enough to venture out further, so are there any spots that are good beginners spots in the sound (have found D9, pinnacles and a couple others), is it easy enough working out where weed banks are? Really don't have much of a clue and thought you all may have some pointers.

Also how far out do you reckon a boat that size would be able to get?? Understand you need to get a feel for a boat and test it out but just curious for some opinions.

Thanks again for your help
Cheers Boots

homebrewer not fishmonger

Can easily make it to carnac or garden island.

Look around the weed banks of carnac for big plump whiting. if looking for seagrass follow the sea shell dredger

Inside the sound you have the basic spots. Looking for ground on a calm day can be as easy as looking into the water. There is plenty of shallow weed ground from the end of Woodies to Karnac.
I have a 4.2 and get out to the 5 Fathom behind Garden Island picking good days with under 10 knots keeps it comfortable.

Thanks Lefty and Fish, went out there this morning and drifted over the weed beds off Woodman Point towards Carnac Island for a fair whack, got plenty of stripeys and butterfish and the odd sand whiting. Had a live bait out and the bolt cutters enjoyed them. Then went out towards Carnac Island near Parmelia Bank and got a few butterfish and had a big run on the live bait then everything went dead. Good fun though and great morning, will suss out some whiting spots in the next few trips hopefully.

Cheers, Boots

Squid can be caught off the weed around there at times. Throw small SP's are will find you a few Hezza's and the odd Pike/Snook and the occasional Skippy.
Winter months will hold KG's in the sand holes/sand edges.
Whiting will be in the deeper water over towards Garden Island.
In Between GI/Karnac has some really rough ground that can throw up the odd surprise Gummy/Pinky (mainly at night) and the odd Sambo to 5kg.
I prefer the area behind GI. Easy to get to from Point Peron ramp and good areas to anchor and burly for some better fish in 10-18 meters of water.
The more you get out there the more you will find.

Happy to chase anything Red Hilux, top three would probably be whiting, snapper or skippys, was just good getting out on the water. Thanks for the advice Lefty, Carnac Island or Mewstone was the next place my mate wanted to try, will look for some deeper water near weed beds, although in between the islands sounds fun, thanks again, will report back when we try again.
