Its traditionally a great time of the year in the metro area. The weather and tides look pretty good for this weekend. Im planning on taking the kayak for a run first thing Sunday morning. Planning on bagging out on pinkies by 7:00 then getting 15 squid on the way home. seabreeze Edited by K1W1, May 3 2013, 11:06 AM.

That's the plan. Still seeing how the weather plays out before deciding if I can get out Tue the 5. Might have to hit up between GI and Karnac otherwise. |

Sounds like fun fella's, if they are starting to come in, is it better to fish just outside the sound (back edge of the 5 or between the isalnd) and hope they are cruising past or do you find a likely spot in the sound, burley up and hope for the best?? Don't have much of an idea but sounds like fun to me if you have any pointers would be stoked Cheers, Boots p.s like the confidence Kiwi |

I dont know what would be best, but i cn give you some tips on fishing inside the sound. The change of light is the key i reckon, everything else is secondary I normally fish less that 10m of water look for some sort of structure nearby and start a berley trail consisting of mulies, crab or prawn shells, tuna oil and whatever else. Throw a bit out every few minutes and pay attention to the current flow. If its calm the sound of the boat can put them down so ease up the spot slowly or with your oars. Set the baits at least 10m away from the boat, down current of your berley trail. 2 lines to cover options. One floater with 2 x 5/0 gamma snelled with whole squid or scalie and one paternoster set with a sinker and live yakka. The black magic KL hooks are a great choice as well. I also use a small stern anchor to stop the boat swinging around, makes it easier to control the lines without them dragging/or too much slack. Generally I fish a strike drag from the start, no letting them run in free spool before tightening up on them |

I prefer to drift than anchor but both methods work well. I have some marks (5 and between islands) where I have caught fish before. I start there and then run parallel drifts to cover more ground. When ever I get something decent I mark the spot and over time it will give me areas to work. |

Kiwi hit the nail on the head with the prime times thing. Sundown they'll use both entrances to The Sound to venture in chasing whiting and squid etc, sunrise they'll move back out thru the same area's. There's also the resident fish that live permanently within the Sound on reefs and structure but these are very few and far between nowadays thanks to technology and spear fisherman. Found good results by first drifting a few spots to see if they were on the chew...if nothing came up we'd find a good spot and sit n berley, drag them out of cover by temptation which usually got them feeding if any were around. Main thing to remember when berleying is to make sure it goes EXACTLY where your baits are or it's a complete waste of time and will only encourage fish AWAY from your baits, VERY IMPORTANT!!! Good luck to all you lucky bastards chasing em this coming week, I hate you all. |

35cm BB and a 52 KG. Only got out for a few hours and the wind picked up before dark so didn't get to stay till prime time. Going for another try this arvo. It's either that or housework. |

Went out friday night for some big runs and a few port jackson and a huge eagle ray. The little 4000 sahara reel held up well. The ray wrapped itself around the anchor rope too. Final finsih for the night was a 3kg cuttlefish. No more fishing till tuesday night for me. |

Lefty, must have been a day for it. Where ever i went on Sunday it was Skippy galore. Managed a nice BB in between, all in all a great day, catch and release about 30 skipps, all around the kilo mark, this one went 1.5kg. I kept the two biggest for a feed. But as i was bleeding one and washing it over the side it slipped the fish grips, and it swam away to feed something else. A small BB & Dhu also came over the side, released well. Weather was awesome. Nil seabreeze and i was out near Rotto for most of the arvo. On a side note, the lovely wife that doesn't eat fish tried the skippy in a beer batter and now she is converted. Finally. 10yrs trying to convert her.
